Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System: Workshop Guide Getting Started with the Turning Point Audience Response Software The Turning Point Software is free to download for PC and Mac systems. Please visit the downloads page at Turning Technologies: The Turning Point Software is integrated within Microsoft PowerPoint, but in order to access Turning Point you need to double click the Turning Point icon from the desktop. This will automatically open PowerPoint with the Turning Point ribbon activated. Open Turning Point by clicking this icon on the desktop. Part 1: Setting Up Plug the receiver into a USB slot on the computer that has the presentation. The receiver accepts the signal produced by the individual ResponseCards and passes the response to TurningPoint. effective range of the RF Receiver = 200 feet default channel for the RF Receiver = 41. (The receiver must be connected to the computer that will be used to run the presentation.) To change the channel on the receiver: 1.) Click Tools on the TurningPoint Ribbon and select Settings. 2.) Select Response Device in the upper left-hand corner of the Settings Window. The channel number is listed under the category ResponseCard Channels. 3.) Click the two-digit channel number and select a new channel. (See example below.) If a receiver has not been detected by the computer, Empty will be listed under ResponseCard channels. ResponseCards must be on the same radio frequency channel as the receiver in order to communicate properly. Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System 1

To make the Turning Point Tab appear automatically whenever you open PowerPoint: 1.) Open Turning Point by clicking on the Turning Point icon 2.) From the Turning Point Tab, click on the Tools icon. 3.) Scroll down to Settings and select it. 4.) In Settings, make sure that Presentation is selected. 5.) Scroll down to the Misc section. 6.) The first item is Add-in always loaded set this to True and click Done in the bottom right corner. Part 2: Setting the ResponseCard Channel 1 Press the GO button in the bottom left corner. 2 Enter the two-digit channel number. 3 Press the GO button again. 4 A green light displays when the channel change is successful. 2 Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System

Part 3-A: Creating an ARS Slide We will now create our own TurningPoint ARS slide. To create a basic TurningPoint Slide: 1 Make sure you are on the TurningPoint Ribbon and click Insert Slide. 2 Select the desired chart slide type. Letʼs choose Vertical Slide. Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System 3

3 TurningPoint inserts the new slide into the presentation, there are three components: Question Area - Where the question being asked is typed. Answer Area - Where up to ten answer choices for the question are typed. Results Area - Where the results of the slide are displayed. 4 Letʼs go ahead and create content for the slide. Click on the text in the Question Area and begin typing the question What day is it? Now click on the text in the Answer Area and begin typing the days starting with Monday. When you are done, click on the chart and it should be updated to reflect the number of choices you created in the Answer Area. 5 Now you have to set values to the answers you created. To the right of the slide is the TurningPoint Settings Pane. Here you can find the right answer and set its value to ʻCorrectʼ. Note: If you do not see the Settings Pane, you can open it by going to the TurningPoint Ribbon and selecting ʻToolsʼ then ʻEnable Settings Paneʼ. 4 Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System

6 Itʼs a good idea to be have a good visual cue as to what the correct answer is in the slide. In the TurningPoint Ribbon select ʻInsert Objectʼ and then go down to ʻCorrect Answer Indicatorʼ. Go ahead and choose one of the indicators which will show up to the left of the answer you have designated as having a correct value. Congratulations! Youʼve made your first ARS slide. Part 3-B: Creating an ARS Slide (continued) Now letʼs go ahead and create a second ARS slide. 1 Click on Insert Slide and this time select the ʻ3D Pie Slideʼ. Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System 5

2 A ʻ3D Pie Slideʼ will have the same basic layout as the ʻVertical Slideʼ we created in Part 3-A. You will notice the difference is in the Results Area where there is now a pie chart instead of the vertical bar from the previous slide. 3 Now go ahead and add a question and answers to the slide. Remember to also set the Answer Values in the Settings Pane to the right of the slide. Donʼt forget to add a ʻCorrect Answer Indicatorʼ from the ʻInsert Objectʼ menu. 4 Letʼs also add some more objects that are pretty useful on these slides The first is the Response Counter. (This keeps track of how many participants have submitted a response and closes polling when all of the responses are received.) Go to ʻInsert Objectʼ, then choose ʻResponse Counterʼ and select one of the different types of counters available. 6 Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System

5 Now go to Insert Object > Countdown. This sets a time limit for answering the question. 6 Finally, letʼs go to Insert Object > Answer Now object. This is a visual cue that the slide is a TurningPoint slide, can provide additional information to participants 7 You should end up with a slide that now has some new objects on the screen. Part 3-C: Creating an ARS Slide (Inserting an Image) Sometimes you will want an image to go along with the question on your ARS slide. This is really easy to do. Letʼs make make one now. 1 Click on Insert Slide and select one of the slide options. To insert an image you will use the same method you normally use in PowerPoint. Go to the ʻInsertʼ tab on the top bar which is located to the right of the TurningPoint tab. 2 Click on the picture icon and new window opens up where you can choose the image you want to import. Once youʼve selected an image and itʼs now on your slide, feel free to move the image around and scale it to fit properly in the slide. 3 Fill in your question and answer boxes if you havenʼt already and donʼt forget to set the answer values in the Settings Pane. Finish up the slide by inserting any objects you think would be useful like correct answer indicators or response counters. Part 3-D: Creating an ARS Slide (Convert to Picture Slide) Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System 7

You might have a slide where you want to use multiple pictures as the answers to your question. This can be done by the TurningPoint feature ʻConvert to Picture Slideʼ. Letʼs try that out now. 1 Create a new ARS slide using ʻInsert Slideʼ and choosing a chart option. 2 Insert pictures to use as answers using the option in PowerPoint s Insert > Picture menu as we did in the previous section. Resize and arrange the pictures so that they are properly displayed on the slide. 3 Go back to the TurningPoint ribbon and click Convert to Picture Slide. Youʼll notice that the answer region is hidden and the pictures are numbered with a label. 4 In the TurningPoint Settings Pane you ll notice that the Answer Values have been updated based on the amount of images you put on the slide. Go ahead and set the appropriate values for each answer. 5 You can now add more objects like correct answer indicators or response counters to finish the slide. Part 4: Additional Types of Slides There are other types of slides you can add to chart participant progress. Letʼs take a look at some of the more useful ones. Team Assignment Slide participants can choose a team and scores will be tallied as a team, as well as individual participants Participant Leader Board lists the highest scoring participants Team Leader Board ranks the highest scoring teams Fastest Responders shows the fastest responding participants Wager Slide lets you bet a percentage of your points on the next slide 8 Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System

Part 5: Converting PowerPoint Slides to TurningPoint Slides Question slides that were created in PowerPoint can be converted into interactive TurningPoint questions. To convert a PowerPoint slide into a TurningPoint slide: 1 Begin with a PowerPoint Slide in Title and Content layout. HINT: Title Area = Question; Text/Content Area = Bulleted Answer Choices 2 From the TurningPoint Ribbon, click Insert Object, mouse over Charts and select the desired chart type. Part 6: Starting and Saving a Session Resetting a Session Prior to starting the presentation, you must reset the session or all slides. Session - clears any previously collected response data from the software and resets the charts Current Slide - resets the chart but does not clear any previously collected response data for the selected slide All Slides - resets the charts but does not clear any previously collected response data, new response data will be appended to the end of the session Running a Session To start a presentation, click the Slide Show tab and select From Beginning or From Current Slide. Clicking the Slide Show Icon in the bottom right corner will also start the presentation. Saving a Session When a presentation is finished, the collected data may be saved by selecting Save Session. To save a session: 1 Click Save Session on the TurningPoint Ribbon. 2 Select the desired save location and name the session file. 3 Click Save. Generating Reports TurningPoint offers several reports to review collected data. To generate reports: 1 Click Tools on the TurningPoint Ribbon and select Reports. 2 Double click a session file. To import a session file click the folder icon and navigate to the location of the file. 3 Select the desired reports. 4 Click Generate Reports. 5 The reports generate in Microsoft Excel. If you selected multiple reports, one Excel file is created with a worksheet for each report. Enhancing Lectures with an Audience Response System 9

Turning Point Objects TurningPoint offers several static and interactive objects that you can optionally add to slides: Charts - change the chart type on a slide Animated 2D/3D Charts - add dimension to slides, the chart is converted to a flash object Countdown - sets a time limit for answering the question Grid - keeps track of how many participants have submitted a response Answer Now - a visual cue that the slide is a TurningPoint slide, can provide additional information to participants Response Counter - keeps track of how many participants have submitted a response and closes polling when all of the responses are received Correct Answer Indicator - displays the correct answer(s) to the audience after polling is closed Stats - adds statistical data to your slide Text Message - sends a message to Participant Lists Participant Lists identify the members of your audience who will use a response device to respond to questions during your presentation.
