ACADEMIC ADVISING: NAVIGATING THE REGISTRATION PROCESS Navigating Registration
Goals for Registration We ll explore: Academic Advising The procedures for registration How to find and use the undergraduate catalog How to fill out a Permit to Register How to use Look Up Classes through OneTech How to register for classes
The Academic Advising Center *All Freshmen & Sophomores 0 Approximately 60 earned credit hours The Sturgis Academic Advising Center (AAC) is staffed by a team of professional advisors located in Rothwell Hall. See OneTech s Student tab to find this person s name. Linda Clarke, AAC Director Marika Lederman, Advisor Phillip Harp, Advisor Jennifer Hardin, Advisor Tim Diffey, Advisor Cara Knight, Advisor W. Scott Tomlin, Advisor Daniel Riedmueller, Advisor Vicki Bills, Advisor All first-time, incoming freshmen register for classes in the AAC. Beginning Fall 2013, all freshmen (excluding College of Professional Studies) will continue to be advised by the AAC s professional staff until approximately sixty (60) credit hours are completed. During the semester in which the student will complete approximately sixty (60) credit hours, students will be aided by the AAC advisor in the transition to their major specific faculty advisors. *Juniors & Seniors Approximately 60+ earned credit hours Advisor is a Professor in the department/college of your major. See OneTech s Student tab to find this person s name. Check with your department/college for their policies on early advising. Go to their office to sign up for an Advising meeting.
Early Registration Question #1: When can I register?? Early registration is enrollment conducted in advance of the semester. Tech conducts early registration twice a year November for the Spring (January May) semester and April for Summer (June and July) and Fall (August December) semesters Students will enroll according to their current number of earned hours (hours earned prior to the current semester). (See OneTech for your transcript to view earned hours.) November 10-12: November 13-17: November 18-20: November 21-25: 60 or more earned hours & Graduate students 20 to 59 earned hours 3 to 19 earned hours 2 or fewer earned hours
My Advisor Question #2/3: Do I have to meet with my advisor to register? What is a mentor? Every student must contact their Advisor before registering to get their Student Registration Code. All freshmen have an Academic Advisor and a Bridge to Excellence Mentor. Advisors differ from mentors. Mentors are helpful in easing your transition to college but can t sign-off on changes to your schedule, or make you eligible to register. For some students this may be the same person but for many these roles will be provided by 2 people.
How can I prepare for registration? The Undergraduate Catalog Describes the policies and procedures for completing a college degree at Arkansas Tech University. To access the catalog go to the ATU website: There is a new catalog each year. Changes usually occur. Typically, students will keep working from the same catalog they started with; it is possible to change to a newer catalog. However, it s not possible to use an older catalog.
The Undergraduate Catalog Major Requirements: Decided students need to refer to their college/major section of the catalog. On the catalog homepage you will see the Colleges and Departments. Under your department title is where your degree plan will be located. (Ex: Department of Behaviors Sciences will have Psychology, Sociology, and etc.) Once you have clicked on your department title scroll until you find the curriculum in your major. The curriculum lists the classes you ll need to take to complete your degree. Click on the course numbers to get course titles, descriptions, and prerequisites. Courses that are recommended/required for each semester are listed. Some classes are recommended in this order and some classes must be taken in this order Electives are courses you can pick from another subject area that is not required by your major (some restrictions occur) talk to your advisor for more information.
Degree Maps These maps are term-by-term sample course schedules based on the Undergraduate Catalog. On each Degree Map, the milestones listed to the right of each term are designed to keep students on track to graduate in four years. Students should use the sample schedules as a general guide to aid them in building a full schedule each term.
Preparation for Your Advising Session Question #4:What do I need to have/know before seeing my advisor? 1. Go online to the undergraduate catalog Undecided students should look at the General Education Requirements to see which they ve completed (or will complete), and then see what s next. Decided students should look at their Major Requirements and General Education and check the courses they ve completed. 2. Make a chart of your proposed class schedule. Chart times and days of the week. Use a Permit-To-Register(PTR)/Registration Worksheet Choose alternative courses in case the ones you want are full, or are discouraged by your Advisor. Check for pre-requisites for these courses by going to the course descriptions of the online catalog, or clicking on the course prefix/number on your degree plan. PTR ***You can find a PTR on the Registrar s Office website.
Preparation for Your Advising Session 3. Go to the online Schedule of Courses. Go to One-Tech, click on the Student tab, then Look Up Classes. See what classes are being offered, when and by whom. **Important Information in the Schedule of Courses** Course prefix (ENGL 1013 (ACTS ENGL 1013)): corresponds to the subject area of the class ENGL = English HIST = History MATH = Math Course numbers (ENGL 1013 (ACTS ENGL 1013)): correspond to the level & credit hours of the class Beginning with 0 is a remedial level Beginning with 1 is a freshmen level Beginning with 2 is a sophomore level Beginning with 3 is a junior level (will likely have prerequisites) Beginning with 4 is a senior level (will likely have prerequisites) Last number of the course number = the number of credit hours the class is worth CRN s (Course Reference Numbers) are vital for registration, 5 numbers (Example: ENGL (ACTS ENGL 1013))
Preparation for Your Advising Session Section numbers: tell what method is used to teach the class (online, mixed, or lecture) Section that begins with TC = online class Section that begins with H = an honors class Section number that begins with 0 = a main campus lecture course Section that begins with A = offered on the Ozark campus only Section that begins with M = mixed technology course Abbreviations: MWF = Class will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for 50 minutes. TR = Class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays (R = Thursdays) for 1 hour and 20 minutes
Registering Online Question #5: How do I register online?? Your advisor may register you during your advising session or the advisor will give you the Student Registration Code and have you register yourself. Online registration opens at 12:00 a.m. Students may go online (anywhere they have internet access) to register. You will register through OneTech using your Student Registration Code. The steps to register: Login to OneTech Click on Student Tab Under Registration Tools click Register Add/Drop Classes Select the term Enter your Student Registration Code Enter the CRN numbers you have written down on your PTR Click Submit Changes
How to Register Step 1: Go to onetech.atu.edu to enter your user name and password. Enter User Name (example: jsmith) Enter Password
How to register continued... Step 2: Click on the Student Tab Click the Student Tab here
How to register continued... Step 3: Click on Register and Add/Drop Classes Click here to register, add or drop a class from your schedule
How to register continued... Step 4: Select which term you are registering for (ex: Spring Term 2015) Select the semester/term you want to register for and hit submit below.
How to register continued... Step 5: Enter the six-digit registration code Enter the registration code you received from you advisor here, then hit submit below
How to register continued... Step 6: Enter the CRN and add your classes. Enter the Course Registration Number (CRN, found in the schedule of classes), then hit the tab key to go to the next block. When you are finished entering all of your courses CRNs, click the Submit Changes Key. If you need to look up a class, hit the class search key to locate the course CRN.
Reminders Keep these things in mind: Freshmen are the last to register for classes. It s important to register online as soon as possible. Waiting can lead to unwanted classes, professors, or times. Remember, you may have to put off a popular class until a later semester when you ve accrued more credits. The only credits that count toward registering are the ones you ve already completed and are on your transcript (earned hours). These include courses on your transcript such as: College courses transferred from another university/college AP and CLEP credits
