5 The University of Leeds - Ordinances and Regulations INTRODUCTION This document contains details of all higher doctates of the University of Leeds governed by Ordinance XII. Details of research degrees (governed by Ordinance X), are available in a separate document. The Graduate Board has responsibility f all these degrees. The fmal terms of reference of the Board include the following: 1. To exercise executive authity in fmulating policy in regard to all research degrees and higher doctates, including those offered in collabation with other institutions including the Institutions accredited by affiliation; 2. To administer all research degrees governed by Ordinance X, and higher doctates governed by Ordinance XII, in consultation with the Learning and Teaching Board where taught modules fm part of a research degree programme; 3. To delegate authity to the relevant Groups of the Board to take action (a) to ratify examination results f research degrees and higher doctates and to award such degrees and (b) confer them in absentia, where requested by the candidate. 1

The degree of Doct of Letters shall be conferred by the University, on payment of the proper fee, upon: (b) members of the academic staff of the University who have served f a continuous less than six years standing. who shall be deemed by the Graduate Board, other committee empowered by the Senate, after considering a rept from the appointed examiners, to have distinguished themselves by their iginal contributions to scholarship by means of a substantial and sustained contribution which has led to international recognition. 2. If the application be approved by the Graduate Board, other committee empowered by The degree of Doct of Divinity 3. The degree of Doct of Divinity shall be conferred by the University, on payment of the proper fee, upon: (b) members of the academic staff of the University who have served f a continuous less than six years standing, who shall be deemed by the Graduate Board, other committee empowered by the Senate, after considering a rept from the appointed examiners, to have distinguished themselves by their iginal contributions to scholarship by means of a substantial and sustained contribution which has led to international recognition. 4. The degree of Doct of Music shall be conferred by the University, on payment of the proper fee, upon: (b) members of the academic staff of the University who have served f a continuous less than six years standing, who shall be deemed by the Graduate Board, other committee empowered by the Senate, after considering a rept from the appointed examiners, to have distinguished themselves by their iginal contribution to music in composition scholarship by means of a substantial and sustained contribution which has led to international recognition. 6. In suppt of their application f the degree candidates must submit either two three compositions a fully documented thesis published wk embodying a substantial piece of research iginal contributions to scholarship. 7. Application f the degree of Doct of Letters shall be made in writing to the University Secretary nominee and contain a full statement of the grounds on which the claim f the degree is based, together with a statement of the candidate s academic recd. 2. The application must be accompanied by three copies of the thesis and/ publications submitted in suppt of the application. In the case of wk submitted under joint authship, the applicant must indicate to the satisfaction of the Graduate Board, other committee empowered by the Senate, his/her own share in the joint production. The applicant must not submit in chief sole suppt of his/her application f the degree a thesis f which a degree has been awarded in this any other university, which is under consideration f the award of a degree in another university; but he/she will not be precluded from submitting in additional suppt of his/her application a thesis f which a degree has already been awarded from incpating (in whole in part) such wk in the thesis submitted, provided he/she clearly indicates the wk thus submitted incpated. 3.
