1 A Proposal for Cloud infrastructure for an Academic System Deepesh Kumar Tiwari School of information technology RGPV, Bhopal Sanjeev Sharma School of information technology RGPV, Bhopal Abstract In the era of technology and software evolution, human need of computing is increases rapidly. Therefore, to satisfy the problem of computational need, software and hardware are now required to be updated. Cloud computing is a powerful weapon by which various computational needs are satisfied. This study includes the cloud computing features and aspects of computing with cloud. The main aim of this study is to provide literature about cloud computing and service development for education. To provide user level remote services, scalable, low cost, efficient and working in plug and play options. There are various cloud based applications are available, but there few cloud applications are available for educational domain. Therefore, this research work is divided into three major modules. First study of cloud computing models; secondly study about development tools and deployment models. And finally a university level cloud solutions which includes, develop, debug and deploy the cloud application for providing advance services to the students for research and development. The proposed research work is a private cloud design which provides various services in the door steps for students. The developed cloud architecture is providing a suitable and adoptable solution for universities as well as student and research scholars. INTRODUCTION Due to rapidly increasing awareness of students and university the study becomes harder and challenging now in these days. In addition of that not all resources are available at the time when these resources are required. On the other hand domain of computation is rapidly growing in past some years, additionally rapidly growing smart devices and computers making revolution in the domain of computation. In fact the traditional computers and workstations are replaced using new and advance computing devices. But simultaneously the scope of cloud computing is rapidly increases. The popularity of cloud computing is increases day by day manner because of there are no need to install and third party software or not need to maintain their computer hardware. If any devices are able to connect with internet then users can use the cloud software freely in plug and play manner. Therefore cloud computing can be able to provide the solution for student. Now in these days students are frequently access the internet from their own laptops and mobile devices, for social networking and other tasks.even though major of students are uses the internet using their own end for finding contents of study. In the same way students are participating in domain of academic research, but due to lake of resources and unavailability of guidelines students are not able to complete their research work. Thus due to this there is a need to implement a cloud computing based solution by which users are can find the proper guidelines from admission to complete their research work using the faculty and resources of cloud. Proposed research work includes the student s requirements of services and implementation using technology and the deployment. This document provides an overview of student requirement, by which student can complete their research work solve their problem self. In addition of that document includes the design, development strategies for implementing the required cloud based solution for university web site. II. CLOUD COMPUTING AND CLOUD SERVICES A. Cloud Overview The cloud makes it possible for us to access information from anywhere. A traditional computer setup requires being in the same location as data storage device, the cloud takes it in different manner. The cloud removes the need to be in the same physical location as the hardware that stores data. Cloud provider can both own and house the hardware and software necessary to run home or business applications. [1] Figure 1 Cloud Environment As shown in fig 1 it refer to organization or individual who uses a Web application for every task rather than installing software or storing data on computer. Cloud environments are uncommon, but an improvement toward it s a long-term goal for computing enthusiasts and cloud capitalists. 91

2 B. Cloud Adaption Challenges As Cloud Computing is still in its infancy adoption is associated with numerous issues. According to survey conducted by IDC in 2008, Major challenges that prevent Cloud Computing from being adopted are recognized by organizations as shown in Figure 2 Figure 2 Adoption Challenges C. Basic Service Models According to service model, cloud computing can be categorized (as shown in Figure 3) into three main categories: i. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) ii. iii. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) internet. Infrastructure as a Service is sometimes referred to as Hardware as a Service (HaaS). [19] b) Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) In this type of cloud computing, it offers a full or partial product development tools or environment that users can access and utilize online as shown in fig 3. In PaaS developers create applications on the service provider's platform over the internet. PaaS service providers may use Application Program Interfaces (APIs), gateway software or website portals installed on the customer's premises. Examples of PaaS are Microsoft's Azure, Sales force s Force.com, Google Maps, ADP Payroll processing. [19] c) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) This cloud computing model offers users the hardware infrastructure, the software product and interrelates with the users through a front-end gateway or portal. Here a provider authorizes an application to clients either as a service on demand in a "pay-as-you-go" model or at no charge by a subscription. CRM, ERP software, content management and other small and complicated software are provided. Cloud computing is a model for enabling suitable, ondemand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider contact. This model endorses availability and is composed of five essential features, three service models, with four deployment models. Figure 4 Service Deployment Models Figure 3 Cloud service model a) Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Infrastructure as a Service is a model in which an organization outsources the equipment used to support operations, with hardware, servers, and memory with components of networking. Service provider owns the equipment and is responsible for housing, running and maintaining it. This type of cloud computing service distributes a full computer infrastructure via the web or D. Deployment Models a) Private Clouds For exclusive use by a single organization and controlled, hosted and managed in data centers. The hosting and operation of clouds may also be outsourced to a third party service provider. But a private cloud remains for the exclusive use of one organization. b) Public Clouds For use by multiple organizations on a shared basis and hosted and managed by a third party service provider. c) Community Clouds Use by a group of associated organizations who wish to make use of a common cloud computing environment. 92

3 d) Hybrid Clouds When a single organization adopts both private and public clouds for an application with the aim to take advantage of the benefits of both. III. PROPOSED DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION This section provides a list of resources that are used during academic research work. A. Initialization of Study When academic research initiated the main problem is to find a domain of study, which leads to consume various previous research work, article and tutorials to understand the domain and actual problem in the selected domain. This section includes the basic student s requirements in initial phase of study. Initially students are not understand about the work properly and confused to decide the goals of the work. Therefore to guide in this stage of work guidelines are required that are listed as: Connectivity with Social Networking Websites Due to loss of physical social network, and shortage of time the communication with friends and relatives are possible using the social networking web sites. There are huge amount of students and other persons are get connected through the social networking. And most of the students are frequently uses internet for get connected with their friends. They use social network web sites for that. In addition of that sometimes students are not available in college campus, but they are still connected with their friends using social networking websites and using messaging. If information about initiation of research work is notified in these social networks then student can participate as earlier as they want. New Technology and Research News In order to place contribution in the research work required to analyze the new applications and patterns of research work. These research ideas and innovative thoughts are found in news subscription and technological events. Therefore new technology and new research works news are required to be update over cloud. These news and feeds are also sharable for different social networking media. By which any one can get benefitted by technology and research events. Most of the time previous technology draw backs are helpful for exploring the new and advance solutions. IEEE, ACM, Springer, Elsevier papers In order to propose a research work, references of different articles and papers are required. In addition of that current research trends and unique ideas are less available in local research papers. Therefore authentic journals and publisher s papers are required to explore and read. But most of authentic journals are not freely available for download over internet. In addition of that the cost of individual research papers are out of budget for students. Thus access of these journals and publishers are required to find a proper direction of research work. If background study becomes poor then problem is poorly identified and solution is not much justifiable for the given problem domain. B. Design and Implementation After finalizing the research domain and setting up objectives required to design and develop some solution or simulation models. Due to this various guidelines and technical support are required. This section provides the detailed description of the required services. Digital Library for Books, Research Papers This is a collection of books related to basics of mathematics, physics and chemistry. These basic books and tutorials are helping sometimes for finding the solutions for big problems. Additionally, these books and research papers can help to understand basic problem understanding and solution formation in terms of mathematics. If a problem is converted into a mathematical problem then solution can be easily adoptable using simple mathematical models. Previous Thesis and Study Material This section provides a search enabled data storage related to previous thesis formats, previous thesis as example. Similar topic related study martial and tutorials. This may help the user to get correct guidelines for problem evaluation and completing the problem formulation and understanding the solution steps. Academic Journals and Events Learning is a process of adaptation, new innovative ideas and techniques that currently utilized. Academic journals and events provide the current technology and research areas of work. Therefore a subscribed network of these events and journals information is required for updated knowledge. This section contains subscribed journals, magazine and latest research on similar adopted topic on which students are work. This may help to keep in track the unique concepts for their own research work. In addition of that some intermediate results and their methods are also can be found in these journals. Therefore, this module is also essential for students. Projects and Demos Prototyping is a good idea to simulate a problem and solution. In addition of that the visual learning is more helpful for understanding in less time, with theoretical concepts. Therefore, running visualization of projects and their demonstration help the students to improve their theoretical as well as practical performance. On the other hand during implementation of the any research solution for a given problem, students are getting confused how the solution can start and how the solution using simulation and code can be implementable. The major confusion is that where to start, this module of the cloud platform can help the users to get correct implementation strategy using previously make solutions and their description. Code Examples Previously written codes are sometime much helpful for exploring the technical problems in new scenarios. Therefore a sample codes and runnable demo codes are required to get correct direction of writing code. In addition of that to start writing a solution a basic platform is required, by which a 93

4 student complete their proposed solution. In addition of that, sometimes a small part of the implementation creating problems. Such as errors and bugs, to solve these errors and for troubleshooting this module can help to the student. Student can read the sample codes and their explanation, by which they can resolve the errors. Forum and Expert Guidelines During writing code or for script writing for simulation, some of scenarios are creating problem due to different compilation and environmental situations. In these cases user or programmer not properly understands about actual problem. In addition of that Sometimes errors and bugs are not handled by own end, thus a forum or blog are required by which students ask the solutions with experts and available professors. By which student learn why these kinds of problems are arises and, how anybody can resolve them, with proper understanding. This phase also required to communication with experts and designers, for solving query about the technical aspects and design. Therefore, a technical forum is required to ask a query and different students and experts help to solve them. Technical Solution and Support Due to development of solution of real work problems, correlation between domain specific knowledge and theoretical aspects are required. Therefore, a module of cloud is required to provide the interaction between experts of technical domain and students, where students can ask some questions to resolve them. Sometime student are confused for implementation, additionally during the implementation some errors and bugs are creates problem. Therefore, technical support for finding bugs and errors during design and implementation is necessary. moreover it sometimes students are in hurry so they are not make proper decisions for technical aspects and outcomes, here a virtual guide keep watch the progress of the student and suggest which correct direction to explore in the given study is. Digital Library for Books, Research Papers Books are always provides the proper guidelines, authors of books are write the summary or conclusion of any point of study in easiest language on which they are able to explain. This includes advantages and limitations both aspects of any particular event or problem. Most of the time research work required intermediate study of any theory, algorithm, and proof between development stages. But not all required materials are available for internet download. Some of them required subscriptions or additional download time payments. Therefore a suitable and domain specific research papers, articles and books are also required for exploring the solution to get desired results. This section of the cloud contains a systematic list of books and such kind of articles. Software and Simulators After finalizing the solution of the proposed problem or studying domain. There are required to implement the problem scenarios and solution steps using attractive graphical user interface. To develop the proposed solutions some hardware and software resources are required like NS2, MATLAB and others. But all the software and simulators are not freely available for download, and if available not complete features are working as the student wants. This part of cloud storage provides software and simulators to download. In addition of that simulation manual also provided in this section by which the implementation becomes easy for students. Video Lectures Visual understanding and learning is a most appropriate now in these days. Using the visual learning process students can learn more rapidly. Therefore a knowledge base is required where a number of videos of different lectures and experts are available. This phase of services contains the video lectures and tutorials. These tutorials are helps students to develop and deploy the desired applications or simulations. The main use of this service is to learning on demand tutorials and experts lectures. In addition of that this section also includes the lectures on research methodology and developer s implementation views on any problems. C. Testing and Results This section of the services provides the guidelines to experimenting with the projects and real-time results evaluation. Tutorials and Experimental Results Previously designed data models, results and experiments are provides the guideline about how the experiments and study of any solution can be concluded. Thus a knowledge base required where previously made research efforts are available with their conclusion for reference. Because most of time students are get confused during writing the conclusion of Experiments. Therefore, in this section includes a list of previous similar projects results and conclusions. The previously given conclusions and results are helps the students how they finalize the work. Additionally this section provides guidelines about how the performance and other relevant parameters are evaluated. Basic Theory and Downloads After experiments required evaluating the performance and other relevant factors but which parameters are able to define the correctness of experimentation results is a main problem. Therefore, the list of parameters only provides, which parameters are required to exploration for work. But how these parameters are computed is also necessary. Therefore, some additional help like basic theory and definitions are required to get know. Why and how these parameters are evaluated. This section includes required formula and other similar tutorials that are helpful for providing the ease to develop the solution conclusion. Assignment Evaluation and Submission Services During study various times professors and teachers provides some task and intermediate experiments to perform. The major problem is submission of these task and evaluation of the given task in a proper manner, with a suitable remark of submitted work. To overcome this problem a support for teachers and students both required. Therefore, this section of 94

5 the services contains the services for assignment submission online. This may help students to submit their work on time. In addition of that this service also includes the assignment evaluation and remark as feedback of work. By which student can improve the quality of work or assignments. IV. CONCLUSION The proposed study is indented to conduct survey around the cloud computing aspects and limitations. The main focus on this study is to design a new kind of educational cloud where research scholar s and simple students both get advantage over this competitive domain. Cloud is a powerful tool now in these days, for anyone who is getting services form internet based applications. This tool provides security, privacy, efficiency and computational and distributive ability over internet. In this study first various cloud infrastructures and their development techniques are studied and for that a rich literature is collected which is provided in this paper. After finding the development strategies of cloud, objective is established given in chapter 3. Finally the required services which providing ease in study of students and research scholars are conducted. To find the gap and in cloud design and available resources for motivating the research and research study the required cloud services. Then given study provides a detailed literature about different aspects of cloud computing. There are various clouds computing environment and relevant application development tools are available. This study is motivated to design an educational environment where all kind of students are get benefit from available services and resources. For that purpose a survey is conducted in this phase of study. In near future this study is implemented using a public cloud domain, by which research scholars get help and support, design and develop their technical ambitions true.
