This Project is a major initiative by the European Commission to support the development of language learning policies across Europe. The European Commission described the purpose of the Survey as being to provide participating countries with comparable data on foreign language competence and knowledge about good practice in language learning. The survey will test the two most widely taught European languages (from English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) in each country from a representative sample of pupils in their final year of lower secondary education. The survey will assess students proficiency in listening, reading and writing. A sample of approximately 1,500 students per language tested, per country will be used. TEACH PROJECT ( ) 12

13 Funded by the Mellon Foundation Institutions involved in the project: Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Columbia University Role: Responsible and author for the Italian Language Participation in the TEACH Project promoted by the Directors of Language Program of Columbia University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. The project aims at creating a dynamic multilingual, multicultural online community of learning and practice which serves the needs and interests of all, from novice instructors to experienced program directors. The TEACH network encompasses theoretical background as well as practical applications, with opportunities for discussion, expansion and self-study in all areas of concern to language teachers, regardless of level of instruction or classroom experience. REFERENCE LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS FOR NATIONAL AND REGIONAL LANGUAGES (RLD) (August May 2010) Promoted and funded by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe Institutions involved in the project: University of Cambridge, Instituto Cervantes, Goethe Institut, Université La Sorbonne-Paris, University for Foreigners of Perugia Role: Language expert and co-author of the Profilo della lingua italiana Launched in 2001, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages marked a major turning point in describing specifications of language-learning targets. The CEFR has been disseminated far and wide and has been translated into approximately 30 languages. It has now become a common reference instrument for organizing language teaching and certification in many member States. The CEFR descriptors specify progressive mastery of each skill, which is graded on a six-level scale (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). The RLD Project aims at identifying the forms of a given language (lexicon, grammar, etc.), mastery of which corresponds to the communicational, socio-linguistic, formal and other competences defined by the CEFR. 14 Promoted by Educational Technology Center, Smith College, Massachusetts, USA The project consisted of developing an intercultural learning environment through computer-mediated communication and videoconferencing. In it American students were able to interact with and improve their critical thinking alongside their peers from an Italian university (the University of Padua 2002, the University Ca Foscari of Venice 2003), following a project-based syllabus.
