1 Call for Letters of Motivation Art Mediation as Activism Towards a Better Commitment An International Summer School in Tuusula Finland, June 25th to 29th, 2013

2 The theme and the objectives The Summer School s objective is to enhance the democratic participation in culture for all, independent of formal training, class, race, gender or wealth. Being culturally active brings one to resources that are multi-targeted: one is introduced to shared strategies that make societal, environmental and artistic work one and effective. Artists have organized several campaigns for democratic rights and particular aims, like Make Art - Stop Aids in Africa, Artists for World Peace, Art for Children s Rights. As a result, in postmodern art activism became an intrinsic part of art, not only a separate campaign theme. Many artists claim that their work in art market is there to change the world; often they even tell us how: to turn world to a more open, democractic and better place to live for all. This message must be introduced as a strategic part of all art mediation, thus of art education as well. Not only in art universities but as well in comprehensive schools, in children s day care and people s colleges the art education is assumed to pronounce its goals and means in a more activist manner to be of any significance. Confronting the world with responsibility and alertness makes art an effective and positive tool for democratic rights. For art education, the change comes from everyday practices: artistic work is taken seriously (not as a hobby), its context seen wider than art world, its consequences more obliging, its commitment demanding. To introduce the change requires research that thematize societal responsibility of art educators. Summer School benefits from knowledge pool of historically diverse but culturally coherent geopolitical area. Significant amount of the participants of the Summer School come from Fennoscandia and Baltic countries. These countries have dissimilar tradition in politics, in societal participation, in art education and cultural commitment; therefore the workshops and seminaries must deal with different strategies, tactics and objectives under the title of activism. Today a kind of European ethos joins these countries together. The anticipated outcome are strategic by nature. They will reveal how different national traditions and separate technological and varied medium-oriented practices will give birth to innovations that show art education as a means of a dialogue and a platform for a more democratic participation in common good. The research initiatives thus born will in due manner change the focus of art mediation and art education to a more committed societal responsibility and intellectual challenge.

3 The program of the Summer School includes 5 key note presentations and several workshops and the reflective plenary sessions. Future research initiatives will be articulated in a group of post doc researchers. We follow the principles articulated in CAVIC network (Contemporary Art and Visual Culture in Education, financed by NordForsk, ), like 1. to compare research fields, methodological and epistemological approaches, and achieved results within ongoing and recently closed research projects in the participating countries and to place these within a larger European perspective 2. to understand the political, social and cultural conditions and needs that motivates contemporary research in visual education 3. to identify how Nordic and Baltic research in visual education can contribute to the development of European educational policies in regard to urgent societal issues such as human rights, environmental challenges, globalization and consumer culture. Anticipated outcomes of the Summer School Concretely, the outcome will be an even more intimate collaboration within CAVIC group and other researchers. CAVIC was a networking platform; the next step will create research collaboration that benefits from the diversity of traditions, ideas and practices when at the same tries to obtain common good under the title of Art Mediation as Activism. Venue CAVIC Summer School will take place in Kallio-Kuninkala, Sibelius Academy residence some 25 kilometers from Helsinki City. The tentative program of key notes The working in the SUMMER SCHOOL takes place with the daily key note introductions (90 min) and in the workshops (240 min). Tuesday, Prof. PhD Tere Vadén Tere Vadén is a philosopher living in Tampere. At the moment he is a professor in Aalto University. He taught interactive media and philosophy at the University of Tampere and was an editor of the philosophical journal niin & näin. He has published the books Wikiworld with Juha

4 Suoranta, (London: Pluto Press 2010) and Artistic Research with Mika Hannula and Juha Suoranta, (Gothenburg: ArtMonitor 2005). In Aalto University Vadén teaches evaluation of distance learning in visual arts. His more recent publications deal with man s relation to nature, the idea of indigenous cultures and how to become an indigenous today. His Karhun nimi (The Name of the Bear) is a highly original exploration to language and naming from the angle of lost experience. A new book on Zizek and Heidegger analyses the criticism of liberal mind as shown in Zizek and Heidegger. Vadén showed interest in visual arts in his book on Finnish artist Kalervo Palsa where he asked after a chance for a local thinking. Wednesday, DEcon Akseli Virtanen Akseli Virtanen is the coordinator and research director of Future Art Base, an experimential art laboratory in Aalto University. Virtanen made his doctoral studies in Helsinki School of Economics (today Aalto University School of Business). Within Future Art Base, he launched a Robin Hood style, art imitative strategy that imitates stock market acts and really works as such as well (in documenta Kassel 2012). Virtanen has been working with the group that created new bio-art laboratory in Aalto University (led by Oron Catts). He is closely connected with Franco Bifo Berardi and the discourse on semiocapitalist society. Thursday, PhD lecturer Max Ryynänen Articles in scholarly journals (Contemporary Aesthetics, Nordic Journal of Aesthetics), theoretical essays published in art magazines (Atlantica Internacional, Art Pulse), catalogue texts (for e.g. Kiasma, NIFCA, Baltic Circle), and theoretical monographs (e.g. a book edited on Umberto Eco) Recent publications: "Boys, boys, boys" Jarmo Mäkilä: Boys, boys, boys, Pori Art Museum.
