5 Introduction As in other years, the ICS presents facts and figures on the previous year in the Annual Report, this time for 0. As most information on the ICS is available in folders on the ICS website, the Annual Report 0 is concise but contains the relevant figures on research input and output, next to information on ICS PhD students and PhD research projects. An important milestone in 0 was the accreditation of the ICS by the ECOS committee of the Royal Netherlands' Academy of Sciences (KNAW). This means that the ICS has entered its fourth period of official accreditation by the KNAW. The current accreditation is valid for a period of six years, until July, 08. The accreditation has been granted based on a thorough review by an independent committee of the ICS research and training program, its scientific performance and its organizational procedures. In 0, ICS research will be assessed again, this time in the context of the national comparative research assessment of all seven Sociology programs in the Netherlands, three of which at ICS locations in Groningen, Utrecht and Nijmegen. The international Peer Review Committee is chaired by Jos Berghmann (Leuven University), and the results of this research assessment are to be expected in the spring of 0. The ICS is thankful for the continued commitment and contribution of all its members, in realizing and maintaining a continuous high level of scientific performance. Prof. dr. Rafael Wittek Chairperson ICS Board

9 . Board and International Curatorium Since the initial accreditation of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), in 99, by the Royal Dutch Academy of Art and Sciences (KNAW), each participating university (University of Groningen, Utrecht University and later the University of Nijmegen) formed a specific and independent unit. The national Research School ICS consists of the Groningen research institute GCS (Groningen Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology), the Utrecht research center (ICS/Utrecht), and the Nijmegen Section for Sociological Theory and Methodology (NCS) of the Department of Sociology. In 0 Rafael Wittek was Chairman of the ICS Board. Louk Hagendoorn left the ICS Board in 0 and was succeeded by Maykel Verkuyten. By the end of 0 the ICS Board consisted of: Vincent Buskens (UU) Andreas Flache (RUG) Gerbert Kraaykamp (RU) Tanja van der Lippe (UU) Melinda Mills (RUG) Peer Scheepers (RU) Maykel Verkuyten (UU) Rafael Wittek (RUG), Chair Jo van Engelen (Faculty of Economics and Business, RUG) (External Advisory Member) The Scientific Director is assisted by a Research Secretary, Rie Bosman, who is also Secretary to the ICS Board. Furthermore, the Scientific Director and the Board receive support from an International Scientific Curatorium consisting of Yannick Lemel (Laboratoire de Sociologie Quantitative du CREST-INSEE), Nan Lin (Duke University, Durham, NC) and Rolf Ziegler (University of Munich, Germany). 5

ICS PhD Students and Postdocs As is shown in Table., there were 55 PhD students and 7 postdocs at the ICS at the end of 0. The inflow of PhD students is quite structured - 0 to 5 PhD students enter the ICS as a year group in September every year - but students leave at various times, depending on the moment they finish their PhD theses. Therefore, the number of PhD students may vary slightly at different moments in the same year. Table. gives full time equivalents for ICS faculty, PhD students and postdocs: following the Standard Evaluation Protocol, the standard research fraction of PhD students and postdocs is set at 70% of their appointment. A full list of PhD students is provided in Appendix 7 and ICS postdocs are listed in Appendix 8 (updates December, 0). Table. gives the ICS research input according to the SEP Guidelines (SEP ).. ICS Staff In 0 Tineke Edink (UU) was Coordinator, and Rie Bosman (RUG) was Secretary to the ICS Board.
