Managers and business owners in the 21 st century operate in an increasingly complex, interdependent and dynamic international environment. Indeed, most businesses today, whether small firms or large companies, are increasingly international in their scope of operations. As a result, there is a strong demand for managers who can combine a range of managerial skills and knowledge, with the knowledge and ability to function effectively in an international environment. BSc (Hons) International Business and Management will suit you if you are interested in the global and international dimensions of organisations. It is ideal for those wishing to University of Bradford 1

2 pursue a general business management degree, with the added benefit of a strong international business orientation. Either way, this programme will prepare you for a professional career in business and management set firmly within the context of the global economy. Following a broad introduction to business and management practice in the first year, you will take a number of core specialist modules in the second and third years. These modules will help you develop the skills and attributes needed in order to establish a career in a company, small firm, government organisation or other international focused organisations. Apart from these core subjects, MDIS will select, through a process of consultation, and incorporating student feedback, a fixed diet of additional modules for this programme. These are selected from a wide range of options from all areas within the study of international business, designed and delivered at the Bradford campus. The full list of the current Bradford optional modules are in the tables below. You will see in the tables below that the core programme modules are aligned to set study periods (terms: Sep, Jan, or May), the optional module diet timings will change on a regular basis and so do not have a designated study period (year). This diet is approved by the Academic Partnership Manager and Associate Dean to ensure a varied and dynamic student experience on this programme. By the end of the programme you will have achieved all of the programme learning outcomes. Programme Aims The programme is intended to: Enable you to apply theoretical knowledge to complex (international business) situations which are characterised by limited or contradictory information. Equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare you for an effective career in international business, or for further study in international business. The holders of a Bachelor s degree (ordinary) will meet the above learning outcomes, but undertake fewer credit requirements as per the University regulations. Curriculum The map of your studies is detailed below. Each year, or Stage, of an Honours programme consists of two semesters. The programme contains a mixture of 20 and 10 credit modules, delivered either over the full teaching year, or over one semester. A number of modules are core to the programme (compulsory for all students) and have two primary purposes. The first set, found exclusively in stage 1, contains foundational modules, which provide grounding in the fundamentals of business and management areas. The second set are found in stage 2, including a module in Business Law and a module in Employability and Enterprise Skills which develops your ability to search for work, make applications and be successively employed. In addition to these modules stage 2 includes a further 60 credits worth of compulsory modules and 30 credits worth of optional modules. By the end of this stage, you will have gained skills in key business areas and begun to develop research skills that underpin your evaluation of both theory and application. In stage 3 you will study 60 credits of core modules in both strategic disciplines and specialist international applications of the key business disciplines. The curriculum may change, subject to the University's programme approval, monitoring and review procedures. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategies Your programme of study has three, one year long, stages of study. Within each stage you will gain knowledge and understanding specific to business and management. You will also acquire personal transferable skills at each stage which will improve and enhance your ability to excel at university and beyond. Stage one of the programme contains only core modules and provides the foundation level understanding to support the attainment of learning outcomes 1 to 8. During stage one core knowledge and understanding of business and management will be introduced (LO1-5). Alongside which, key graduate learner skills including communication and the correct sourcing, use of and presentation of information including referencing will be introduced. Such skills will enable you to write in an academic manner (LO6) and begin to reflect on the value and usefulness of the information (LO5) with which you are presented, engage in team working (LO7) and consider your future career paths (LO8). 7 Stage 2 contains core modules in Business Law and Employability and Enterprise. Business Law continues the development of theory and provides more specialist knowledge to underpin business decision making (LO11) and Employability and Enterprise supports the attainment of core transferable skills such as problem solving and career enhancement (LO14 and 17). You also study core modules in Resource Planning for Operations, Financial Management, International Finance and Integrated Marketing Communications enabling you to link key business and management disciplines to the international context with more in-depth specialist knowledge. These subject give you the opportunity to both critically review the current theory and its practical applications. (LO9, 11 and 13). During stage 2 you will encounter a wide variety of assessments that build and test graduate attributes (LO14, 15 and 16), the focus here is more on interpretation and evaluation, rather than understanding and description (LO9-16). As a final year student, you will be prepared to demonstrate your ability as an independent learner. For the final stage, advanced specialist knowledge in Strategy and the Global Business Environment along with International Business is gained via the core modules. You will be presented with teaching materials, methods and assessment strategies that will require you to be more evaluative and critical of theory and utilise problem solving skills, often in relation to advanced business scenarios (LO19-20). For instance some modules give you the opportunity to work in teams (LO 18, 21, & 23) or debate society and global issues. Graduate transferable skills with be gained as you research information in depth (LO21) and communicate this effectively, either individually (LO22) or as part of a group (LO23). The School of Management prides itself on providing an educational experience which is informed by the world class research of the School s academic staff and works with MDIS to ensure you gain from this experience from staff flying in to teach you locally and local tutors. The School also has a long tradition of ensuring that students develop academically with knowledge, understanding and personal skills that are relevant and fit the needs of contemporary business. Together, the exploration of leading research ideas and the application of knowledge and skills to real business problems pose interesting and appropriate challenges to our students. We understand you may arrive from school, college or some other route as a tutor dependent learner, following prescribed lesson plans and assessments. Through a transformational educational experience you will graduate as an independent learner, able to identify your own learning needs, sources of information and an ability to critically evaluate, reflect upon and develop your own learning. This process of transformation will be gradual, progressive and supportive. Through each stage of study progressively more advanced skills, experiences and expectations will be introduced, challenging you to mature as a learner within a supportive and developmental environment. Methods of assessment vary according to the learning outcomes of particular modules and the stage of study. Accordingly, a mixture of closed and open book examinations, essays, case study analysis, computer assisted assessment, group work and presentations will be used to assess your learning. Throughout the programme your learning will be supported using various methods of formative assessment and feedback. This is to help you progress your studies and support your continuing development. For all taught modules your learning will be directed, supported and reinforced through a combination of lectures, tutorials, small group seminars, virtual learning environment University of Bradford 7

8 activities and guided private studies. The School and MDIS are also committed to demonstrating the relevance of taught material to real business problems, guest speakers from the marketing industry allow you to hear about current and topical issues from practitioners from a variety of organizations. Generally, for each module, you will attend sessions during which you will be in direct contact with teaching staff. Your learning will be supplemented by private and group study (as appropriate) following the direction of module teaching staff. All teaching will be supported by information and activities provided through the University s virtual learning environment. One of the School s main aims is to address major challenges for business and society such as global responsibility and sustainable development and the BSc (Hons) International Business and Management supports this. Accordingly, the School seeks to prepare students who are able to contribute in an effective manner to debates about sustainable development and critically appraise the relationship(s) between the social, economic and environmental dimensions. Our intention is to nurture students who can apply the principles of sustainable development in their professional capacity. Whilst there are a number of individual modules that focus specifically on sustainability issues (e.g. Sustainable Operations Management, Ethics in Business and Society), awareness of the importance and principles of sustainability is emphasised in modules and underpin the learning outcomes three, thirteen and twenty. Assessment Regulations This Programme conforms to the standard University Assessment Regulations which are available at the following link: Admission Requirements The University welcomes applications from all potential students regardless of their previous academic experience; offers are made following detailed consideration of each individual application. Most important in the decision to offer a place is our assessment of a candidate s potential to benefit from their studies and of their ability to succeed on this particular programme. Entrance requirements for each programme will vary but consideration of your application will be based on a combination of your formal academic qualifications and other relevant experience. If you have prior certificated learning or professional experience, which may be equivalent to parts of this programme, the University has procedures to evaluate this learning in order to provide you with exemptions from specified modules contained within the curriculum. MDIS will talk to the Academic Partnership Manager at Bradford regarding these individual cases. An International Baccalaureate score of A Polytechnic Diploma from a UK approved Institution with a B/C grade average (or a GPA average of 2.5) for the Business & Management Progression from the MDIS Diploma pathways: 5. Students graduating from the DBM programme with a C grade average will be eligible for the Year 1 entry 6. Student graduating from the ADBM programme with a C grade average will be eligible for Year 2 entry Students applying for entry on to the Bradford degree with other entrance profiles will be considered on a case by case basis by the University of Bradford. All applicants must also have achieved a Grade C in GCSE or O-Level English Language and Maths (or equivalent approved qualification). Applicants wishing to join the programme for whom English is not their first language, must have IELTS at 6 (with 5.5 in each of the components) or above, or TOEFL or other recognised language equivalent. Applications are welcome from mature students (those over 21 years of age on entry) and candidates with non-standard qualifications, for example, HND, Scottish Higher or Irish Leaving Certificates, International Baccalaureate and others. Those who lack academic qualifications but who have significant relevant experience can also be considered. An admissions team at MDIS will assess the suitability of applicants prior to making a recommended decision whether to reject an application, to offer a place conditional on the attainment of an acceptable qualification at an appropriate level, or to offer a place unconditionally. This will be for normally accepted entrance qualifications as detailed on the previous page. For applicants without these, MDIS will consult with the University of Bradford s International Partnership Manager or Programme Leader with whom all final decisions will rest. Learning Resources The MDIS Resource Hub is MDIS HQ (Block C Level 4), and houses up to 25,000 resources materials with ample reading and reference space for students. Collection subject areas include 13,500 titles in the IT subject area, business, management, mass communications, social sciences, life sciences and hospitality and tourism, fashion design and engineering. Other special reference collection that may be accessed in the Resource Hub includes annual reports, yearbooks, periodicals and journals. You will be able to access online e-journals through the University of Bradford, and video viewing facilities are provided. Student Support and Guidance Programme Team Support for you personally and in your programme of study will be provided on a day to day basis by a full time Programme Coordinator at MDIS. You will be provided with a student handbook, co-authored by the University of Bradford and MDIS and a comprehensive series of module handbooks to support your study. MDIS also provide The Student Care and Administration Department (SCA). The SCA is created to ensure our students are enveloped with a conducive and holistic learning environment at MDIS. The SCA organises various activities for students such as orientation programmes and educational visits to local and multi-national corporations in Singapore. Set up to assist interested students and members of the public in their admission applications, our partnerships with over 70 internationally recognised universities in the United Kingdom, France, the United States and the Australasian arena, will ensure a smooth transition to an overseas University of your choice. Students Union All international students have access to the Student Union via , web and can arrange dialogue if required. Course Representatives and Feedback We value the feedback provided by students collected through a system of course representatives and formal staff student liaison committees, so that any issues you wish to raise are addressed rapidly. Meetings are held twice a year between Programme Management Staff, the Academic Partnership Manager and the student representatives. University of Bradford 10

11 Issues are discussed openly and possible solutions are discussed, agreed or investigated further. Problems can be raised outside of meetings and will be dealt with quickly by either MDIS or Bradford staff as appropriate.
