17 Business Intelligence Definition BI is the set of techniques and tools for the transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful information for business analysis purposes to improve and optimize decisions and performance. What is Business Intelligence

18 Business Intelligence A strategy of combining data from various sources to get a set of facts that provides a picture of the business at a certain point in time. BI is based on the information stored by the company itself, which can be presented in multiple formats (text files, excel files, databases, ERPs, etc.) and from multiple applications. All this information should be treated and filtered in order to optimize its analytical processing. This process is called ETL.

Transform is the process of converting the extracted data from its previous form (using rules, combining data, etc.) into the form it needs to be in. Load is the process of writing the data into the end target, normally a database called Data Warehouse. Often the information can be structured in different levels of detail to suit different user needs. Data always reflect the present state of business activity in the operational systems. In contrast, the information stored in the data warehouse is processed, among other uses, for trend analysis. Therefore, the data warehouse is loaded with different values of a variable along the time to allow comparisons. Nonvolatile The information of a Data warehouse is permanent, that is, it can be read but not modified. The data warehouse can only be updated by incorporating the latest values taking the variables contained therein, without any kind of action over the previously stored data.
