OVERVIEW The is a small, research intensive university with a student population of approximately 4,300 enrolled in more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs. Located near the geographic centre of beautiful British Columbia, UNBC s spectacular main campus is situated in the City of Prince George. Since its establishment in 1990, UNBC, Canada s Green University, has quickly built a reputation as a top ranked Canadian University. UNBC has a strong mandate for growth, is committed to research and teaching excellence, and provides strong support for faculty to develop their scholarly initiatives. UNBC values experiential learning, student engagement and interdisciplinary study. Graduates from UNBC have become leading researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs in Canada and internationally. Students are attracted to UNBC because of the personalized educational experience and the dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to creating an exceptional teaching and learning environment. Approximately 70% of UNBC s students come from northern British Columbia; 15% come from southern British Columbia and another 15% come from elsewhere. Approximately 17% of students are enrolled in graduate programs and 11% are Aboriginal. UNBC offers 50 undergraduate majors and 24 graduate programs, including a small number of professional programs and a growing number of doctoral degrees. Page 3 of 14

5 SCHOOL OF NURSING MISSION A statement of what we do. We are dedicated to excellence in nursing education through the integration of theory, practice, research and scholarship in collaboration with the health care community. VISION A statement of where we aspire to go. We will prepare nurses who are outstanding practitioners, leaders and scholars in promoting the health of rural and northern people in the context of their communities. OVERVIEW The UNBC School of Nursing prepares nurses, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses and researchers to apply and to extend knowledge and practice to rural, northern, remote communities and beyond. The School takes a practice-driven approach to nursing education and benefits from strong partnerships with health authorities and other agencies. Students have the opportunity to learn from experienced teachers, outstanding clinicians, practice leaders and researchers, all of whom are committed to ensuring that students have the best possible learning experiences and outcomes. The School offers programs in Prince George, Terrace, Quesnel and online; it draws on a network of state-ofthe-art simulation laboratories and clinical practice experiences across Northern British Columbia. The School offers innovative and practice-based programs of study at the undergraduate level, including the Northern Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing Program (NCBNP) in partnership with the College of New Caledonia and Northwest Community College, a Post-Diploma program, and a provincial practicedriven Rural Nursing Certificate Program (RNCP). At the graduate level, the School provides multiple options for individuals wishing to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) degree: a Professional/Academic stream and a Family Nurse Practitioner stream. In addition, UNBC offers a collaborative, inter-professional doctoral program in Health Sciences which provides students with the opportunity to pursue doctoral level study. 6 PRINCE GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA Prince George is the commercial, cultural, educational and transportation hub for Northern British Columbia. Located at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers, Prince George is a vibrant, active and diverse multicultural community that provides a strong focal point and identity to the north. It has a thriving economy that offers full opportunities for housing, employment, education, recreation and the cultural life of residents. Prince George has a vibrant, bustling arts and culture community with wonderfully active volunteer and professional organizations that encourage professional and recreational artists. The City is home to a remarkable literary community, the Prince George Playhouse, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Studio 2880, Two Rivers Gallery, the Railway and Forestry Museum, the CN Centre, the Civic Centre and the Prince George Public Library. It hosts the Coldsnap Winter Music Festival and the CNC Film Festival. The City of Prince George endeavours to be BC s Northern Arts Capital through providing access to the arts for all citizens by supporting the arts, encouraging partnerships, stimulating excellence and acknowledging and promoting the contribution of the arts towards providing an excellent quality of life in Prince George. Lifestyle in Prince George is closely intertwined with recreational pursuits and outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, skiing, golfing, kayaking and canoeing and camping. The vast surrounding region of Northern BC has a population of approximately 300,000. Northern BC is a land of unlimited adventure that extends 1,000km/621mi from east to west, following the legendary Yellowhead Highway. It is filled with jagged mountain peaks, roaring rivers, serene lakes, green valleys, rugged coastlines and ancient island archipelagos. Northern BC is home to one of the largest concentrations of distinct Aboriginal groups in Canada, including the Haida, Nisga a and Carrier. Aboriginal art and culture capture the essence of life in this region. People from around the world choose to live in Northern BC, as it affords them a standard of living and quality of life that often can t be matched in urban centres. 7 POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES FUNCTION Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences, the Chair provides strategic and administrative leadership to the School of Nursing. The Chair, in collaboration with faculty and staff, promotes excellence in teaching, clinical competency and research leadership. The Chair is committed to building and developing internal and external partnerships, and to fostering student and program success. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRIMARY DUTIES: Foster a culture of collaboration, communication and engagement among faculty, staff and students Provide leadership and mentorship for the School s faculty members across all campuses Oversee and assign the work of the support staff; provide insight and reporting for staff evaluation processes Authorize expenditures from the School budget in accordance with University Policy Organize and chair regular School meetings (at least twice in each of the Fall and Winter semesters) Delegate other tasks necessary for the normal and efficient running of the School Lead the review, update and execution of the School s Strategic Plan Enhance the School s existing partnerships, and seek out new opportunities for collaboration (e.g., with the First Nations Health Authority and First Nations communities) LEADERSHIP Lead the CRNBC review process Oversee regulatory accreditations and reviews as a requirement of CASN Accreditation Address challenges and seek opportunities associated with School s programming in rural and remote areas Promote and further develop the School s multiple programs, seek opportunities to build the capacity to supervise masters and PhD students Participate in the review of the Faculty s programs; support program renewal and continuous quality improvement Advance existing, and explore new interdisciplinary and blended learning opportunities Continue to partner with Northern Health on efforts to integrate knowledge into practice for high quality nursing care Take an active role in the professional development of the School s faculty; encourage faculty members scholarly, research and clinical commitments Page 7 of 14

8 Recognize the strengths of the many part-time and sessional faculty members who are actively involved in the School; capitalize on their expertise and contributions Champion equity issues and inclusion, fostering a supportive and respectful working environment that is committed to diversity Support initiatives that proactively address the needs and concerns of students ADMINISTRATION Represent the School s interests in administrative and academic matters Administer departmental budgets and staffing plans Provide direction to administrative staff within the School; engage in the development of staff, including recommending and facilitating training opportunities Make decisions in a fair, consistent and transparent manner; communicate those decisions effectively and manage the outcomes of those decisions Effectively assemble resources from internal and external sources to support the School s teaching and research activities Participate in government and other external funding initiatives, grant applications, etc. RECRUITMENT Plan and prioritize personnel needs for the School Establish strategies that enhance the School s ability to compete in the recruitment and renewal of high calibre faculty and staff Provide leadership in student recruitment with an emphasis in the areas of graduate and Aboriginal student recruitment Provide general oversight of School admissions and academic standards INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS Establish clear and transparent lines of communication with faculty, staff and students Ensure appropriate lines of communication are established with various units on campus Establish and maintain contacts with external deans, university officials, government officials and sector and community leaders Participate in relevant provincial, national and international organizations to promote the interests of the School and UNBC Consult, liaise and work creatively with other academic institutions and relevant communities regarding the School s programs Page 8 of 14

9 CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS GENERAL The successful candidate will be an inspiring and strategic leader with a strong record of success as an academic administrator. S/he will have a doctorate in nursing or a related field and a record of achievement in teaching and research. Exceptional advocacy skills, as well as program development and clinical practice experience are essential. Eligibility for licensing in the Province of British Columbia is required. EXPERIENCE In addition to the Core Competencies and Role-Specific Competencies, this position requires: Demonstrated strategic leadership in the achievement of excellence in research and teaching, and current understanding of clinical practice Experience implementing budgets and allocating effectively in a climate of financial constraint Experience in human resource management related to faculty and staff, including staffing plans Experience interpreting, creating and implementing policies and procedures A proven ability to make difficult decisions, based on sound judgement and fair and appropriately open processes A proven ability to identify goals, set priorities and make decisions regarding strategies and resources to achieve those goals; maintain a broad perspective and achieve a balance between competing needs Collaborative, consultative, team-oriented leader who is politically astute with a demonstrated ability to build and support teams Experience identifying and obtaining resources through development initiatives and other means Knowledge of education programming at a provincial, national and international level Demonstrated commitment to mentoring academic and professional staff Demonstrated commitment to working with Aboriginal and/or rural populations Demonstrated fundraising and advancement experience is desirable Page 9 of 14

This includes fostering an entrepreneurial culture by reducing complexity, avoiding waste and maximizing opportunities. It is about improving quality and working to reduce costs. Planning and Coordination: Ability to select priorities, co-ordinate activities and make best use of resources to ensure that the University s Vision, Values and objectives are achieved. Providing leadership so that staff know the criteria for their success; addressing staff priorities by using their time wisely, reviewing workload and resource needs in order that they succeed. Identifies and analyzes problems, distinguishes between relevant and irrelevant information to make logical decisions and provides solutions to individuals and organizational problems.
