1 Collection Policy: Business Administration 1. Introduction The Library supports the instructional and research needs of faculty and students working within the Faculty of Business Administration. The Faculty s precursor, the School of Business Administration was established in 1965 and became the Faculty of Business Administration in Over the years, Business Administration has offered a diverse selection of programs including a 3 year Diploma in Business Administration and a 1 year graduate diploma in Business Administration. After 1989, diploma programs were eliminated and only degree granting programs were offered. It currently offers several programs leading to a Bachelor of Administration (1976- ), Honours Bachelor of Commerce (1967- ), Honours Bachelor of Commerce Co-op option (1996- ) and graduate degrees (2003- ). The following programs are offered at the Thunder Bay campus: 3 yr Bachelor of Administration 4 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Business Economics major 4 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce General Management major 4 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce International Business major 5 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Accounting major (Co-op option) 5 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Business Finance major (Co-op option) 5 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Human Resources Management/Industrial Relations major (Co-op option) 5 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Information Systems major (Co-op option) 5 yr Honours Bachelor of Commerce Marketing major (Co-op option) Honours Bachelor of Commerce college transfer program Bachelor of Administration college transfer program Entrepreneur certificate program Master of Science in Management Master of Business Administration

2 The following programs are offered at the Orillia campus: Honours Bachelor of Commerce - Administrative Studies major Bachelor of Administration college transfer program Master of Business Administration The Chancellor Paterson Library is the main location for the business administration collection. The Chancellor Paterson Library has been a depository library for federal government documents since 1967 and a depository of Ontario government publications since The Education Library provides some support material in the areas of human resource management, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Business material of a regional nature can be found in the Northern Studies Resource Centre. Students at the Orillia campus rely heavily on electronic books and electronic journal articles but are able to request printed resources from Thunder Bay when required. 2. History of the Collection The Library has been collecting Business Administration material since the establishment of Lakehead University. Many of the core topics, such as accounting, marketing, and finance, have been offered consistently over time resulting in a good representation of business fundamentals. Some areas of the collection were developed in support of topics previously offered as business majors, such as the Major in Health Services ( ). Courses in entrepreneurship were introduced in 1990 and the concept of electronic commerce in the 2000 s and the collection expanded accordingly. Courses currently offered correlate to the eight majors being offered which include business economics, management, international business, accounting, finance, human resources management, information systems, and marketing. The Faculty of Business Administration places a greater emphasize on journal acquisitions then on the acquisition of monographs. Monographs that have been selected in recent years have focused on various aspects of commerce including commodities, international economic relations, marketing, and e-commerce (class HF); business logistics (class HD); finance, specifically investment, capital formation and speculation (class HG); and production management (class TS). The print collection has been supplemented by the acquisition of business administration electronic books. 3. Languages English (or translation into English) is the primary language of the collection.

3 4. Chronological Guidelines works with an emphasis on the last five years are of primary interest. Retrospective material will be collected where appropriate. 5. Geographical Guidelines There are no geographical restrictions although material predominately originates from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. 6. Types of Material The Library actively collects monographs, journals, government documents, and reference materials. Conference proceedings, dissertations and theses, annual reports and other serial publications are acquired selectively. The predominate format for monographs is print although the Library is actively building the electronic book collection. The predominate format for journals and government documents is electronic. Retrospective material in other formats such as microform, CD-Rom and DVD are available in the collection but are not actively acquired. 7. Subject Areas/s (4 levels: basic, initial study, advanced study, research) The subject organization below follows the Library of Congress Classification Outline, Class H Social Sciences, Class J - Political Science, Class T Technology. # Subjects LC Class HA Statistics 1 General works. 7 # Subjects LC Class JL - Political Institutions and Public Administration 36 Political institutions and public administration Canada (public policy) JL T - Technology 37 Management information systems T Basic 38 Production management/operations management TS Interdisciplinary Activities There is interdisciplinary activity with the Department of Economics as all first year Business Administration students are required to take an introductory course in Economics. In subsequent years, the Faculty of Business Administration offers 8 distinct majors including Business Economics and students who select this major have economic options available to them including microeconomics, money and banking, public finance, and econometrics. In their 4th year all Business Administration students can select course options identified in History, Philosophy, and Political Science. 9. Strengths/Weaknesses The Faculty of Business Administration places a greater emphasizes on the acquisition of journals rather than on monographs. This focus in collection development has resulted in a reduction in print monograph acquisitions however the library s purchase of electronic books has enhanced the currency of the overall collection. Electronic books are available on all topics of business administration but are particularly strong in relation to industrial management, labour and industrial relations, economic history and conditions, and public policy. Packages containing a significant number of electronic books in support of business research include Canadian Electronic Library, SpringerLink, Taylor and Francis, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and Wiley-IEEE.

8 Due to the overlap in some subject areas, the print monograph collection benefits from purchases made by the Department of Political Science (Public Policy), Department of Economics (Business Economics), and the Faculty of Engineering (Information Systems). The journal collection is a priority for the Faculty of Business Administration and is strong in both print and electronic format. The majority of print journals relate to commerce (class HF) and industries, land use and labour (class HD). Subject coverage of electronic journals extends across all components of business administration. Electronic journal packages containing a substantial number of journals relating to business are ABI/Inform, JSTOR, Sage publications, Science Direct and SpringerLink. 10. Thunder Bay and Regional Resources The collection of the Thunder Bay Public Library (TBPL) contains additional material at the undergraduate level. The main focus of TBPL resources are accounting, management/leadership, and advertising/marketing. The collection of the Paterson Library Commons, Confederation College, also contains a selection of business related materials. The range of materials correlates to the business programs currently offered by the college: accounting, human resources, marketing, international business and trade, business fundamentals, corporate communications, and office administration. 11. Internet Resources The Library maintains links to business resources on the Internet via the electronic Business subject guide. The subject guides for Economics and Political Science provide additional access to internet related resources. 12. Liaison: The Faculty of Business Administration is responsible for selecting appropriate library resources. A library representative from the Faculty of Business Administration liaises with a designated Collections Development Librarian with respect to the Faculty s library budget, the acquisition process, consortia projects and serials management. It is the responsibility of the Collections Development Librarian to ensure that relevant information regarding new publications is forwarded to the Faculty s library representative for consideration. The Library accepts donations of books and journals which fall within its collection scope. 13. Weeding. Weeding will be done on an ongoing basis to preserve the quality, currency and strength of the collection.
