4 What is Printed Electronics Printed electronics is an emerging industry that takes advantages of different printing technologies to manufacture electronic components and devices of various functionality and complexity PolyIC 2008 Printed Electronics o o o o High throughput and inexpensive production (processing at ambient) Mechanical flexibility (roll-to-roll) Large area Light weight

5 Bulk vs. Solution Processed Materials Bulk properties p of the material are governed by several factors: Composition Presence of impurities i i Processing Resulting microstructure For PE it is necessary to use suspension or solution of material (FUNCTIONAL INK) which can be layered to approximate the bulk properties of a material. Ink certainly not a new term Functional added to differentiate graphic arts inks that provide visual attributes g p p from inks that provide intrinsic bulk electrical, thermal, chemical, or optical properties

8 Materials Registry for Printed Electronics WMU s CAPE has received an award from FlexTech Alliance to create an open-access database for accessing technical information on functional materials used in manufacture of printed and flexible electronics. Purpose: strengthen printed electronics industry and supply ppy chain provide increased access to technical information about available products both research and commercial facilitate greater visibility of material suppliers within the printed and flexible electronics supply chain.

9 Materials Registry cont d Entries to the database include relevant non-proprietary p information about the material itself information on deposition and post deposition processes information on material properties and applications vendor information and contact details Access: Planned to be released at the end of Summer 2011 open access to anybody in preview phase free of charge to FlexTech members and material suppliers who list their products subscription based access
