MHYC drastically made a difference in the amount of invasive weeds at Rocky Flats NWR. Due to their hard work, the number of invasive weeds will be reduced in subsequent years. Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge
At Mile High Youth Corps, our goal is not only to employ and educate young people, but to also show them how their service to the community has deeper impacts on themselves and everyone they know. Our Corpsmembers learn that they can better themselves and the world at the same time. By getting out into the communities where they live and building a trail, planting a tree, retrofitting a home, or building sustainable low-income housing, they are not just earning a paycheck and money for their education, but also making the world a better place. That is why I m so pleased to report that 2014 was an exceptional year for Mile High Youth Corps. The Impact Report illustrates the personal accomplishments our 232 Corpsmembers achieved GEDs, Education Awards, job placement, college acceptance and also the incredible impact they made on our local parks and open spaces, energy and water consumption, and access to low-income housing. Other highlights were approval to open a charter school and securing a new space in the Sun Valley neighborhood for our energy and water program. Your generous support over the past year allowed us to exceed our fundraising and revenue goals, setting us up for more success. Thank you so much for your continued support of our youth, our communities and our natural resources. Kelly Causey, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer

Mile High Youth Corps Programs
AmeriCorps Leadership & Conservation The AmeriCorps Leadership & Conservation (ACLC) program is a team-based, year-long hybrid of our Land Conservation and Energy & Water Conservation programs. Corpsmembers begin in the spring, installing resource-saving measures in low-income homes and nonprofit facilities, while also communicating the benefits of these conservation measures to a diverse clientele. In the summer and fall, Corpsmembers assume assistant land crew leader positions. Additionally, Corpsmembers plan and lead service projects, facilitate education and team-building activities, and engage in community outreach. Tabitha Tabs Graves is not new to the MHYC family. She served in the Land Conservation program for two terms before applying to be an ACLC and her brother participated in the YouthBuild program. I really needed a job and wanted to switch up my summer from working at kids camps, she said. I joined an overnight crew and fell in love with the work and the company. Tabs said Mile High Youth Corps gave her a great respect for nature and the environment. It also gave her an opportunity to earn several AmeriCorps Education Awards that she can use to pay off her student loans and prepare for more schooling. I decided to take a gap year and join ACLC after completing two years at Metro to get a better idea of what I want to do, she said. Once she completes her current term of service, she plans to attend nursing school to reach her ultimate goal of becoming a mid-wife. Mile High Youth Corps gave her the leadership skills and opportunity to find and pursue her dreams.
Energy & Water Conservation The Energy & Water Conservation program sends our trained Corpsmembers out into local neighborhoods to interact with the community and improve local conservation efforts. Corpsmembers visit 3,000 homes of low-income residents and nonprofit facilities where they perform an energy audit to determine how to help save energy, water and money. They then install, as necessary, compact fluorescent light bulbs, sink aerators, programmable thermostats, lowflow showerheads and high-efficiency toilets. They also educate residents and community members on the environmental and financial benefits of conservation. By working in their own communities, Corpsmembers gain the skills and training necessary for careers in the green energy field and help to elevate the perception of young people in local neighborhoods. Some comments from clients: I m super impressed with the entire team. A wonderful group of young adults and very knowledgeable of the job that was performed. They were better than some professional companies I ve dealt with. I would love to have my son join the winning crew. Tony Lo moved to Colorado from Virginia in search of more opportunity. I worked retail for a long time, but where I m from in Virginia, there were no entry level jobs, he said. This is a good introduction to environmental science and a chance to learn about a growing industry. He is hoping to join one of Colorado s many solar energy companies after leaving MHYC.
Land Conservation Denver Land Conservation is the oldest program at Mile High Youth Corps. Inspired by the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, youth work on a variety of projects, including trail building and maintenance, fire and flood mitigation, habitat restoration and the removal of invasive plant species. The work of MHYC Land Conservation Corpsmembers impacts hundreds of acres of national, state and local parks, open spaces, and public trails each year in Colorado. One of those Corpsmembers is Jorge Lomas. In 2013 Jorge, the first member of his family to attend college, was looking for an opportunity to earn money for school and give back to the community by helping the environment. He enrolled in MHYC s Summer of Service program and joined a chainsaw crew removing invasive species. This work was completely foreign to me, he said, but I applied anyway. During the interview, the staff explained how we would be helping the local ecosystem by removing non-native plants to allow native plants to re-grow. I also learned that I would be working on a crew, participating in educational and professional development activities and getting a scholarship for school. As soon as I finished the interview, I knew. Jorge went on to serve three terms as a Land Conservation Corpsmember and has joined the MHYC staff this summer as a Conservation Crew Leader. The Denver-based Land Conservation crews serve Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Gilpin and Jefferson counties.
Land Conservation Southern Front Range Mile High Youth Corps Land Conservation programs stretch from the northern Denver suburbs, all the way to the New Mexico border, including the entire Southern Front Range of Colorado. In 2014, Southern Front Range lands crews did a lot of work helping local communities recover from the devastating wildfires of recent years. They also helped protect the areas from future flooding. Flooding is a common occurrence after a wildfire. To help combat this threat, MHYC Corpsmembers installed more than 200 log erosion barriers in the Waldo Canyon burn scar area. They also installed dams and detention structures in the Black Forest and Fountain Creek areas. Jessie Draper, a current Corpsmember serving on the Peregrine crew this summer talked about her experience with Mile High Youth Corps Southern Front Range. A summer job definitely was a must, since I start college in the fall. Since this job offered a scholarship in addition to pay, it looked like a good idea. It became a great idea when I saw it was a job doing conservation and being outdoors. Jessie says she enjoys the sense of accomplishment that comes after completing hard work, the views from her campsite and the crew with whom she works. After her term of service is up, she plans to study wildlife biology/zoology in college. The Southern Front Range Land Conservation crews serve Custer, El Paso, Fremont, Huerfano, Las Animas, Pueblo and Teller counties.
YouthBuild YouthBuild is a comprehensive job-training, education and leadership development program that engages out-of-school and unemployed young adults ages These Corpsmembers spend half of their time on a large-scale, Denver Housing Authority construction site learning job skills and building low-income housing units, with the remaining time spent in the classroom working toward earning a high school diploma. YouthBuild participants also receive career and college readiness training, leadership development, service learning and civic engagement activities, life skills and healthy lifestyles classes. In addition, they receive intensive career and post-secondary education placement assistance after finishing their term, as well as one year of intensive followup services. We are proud to announce the opening of RiseUp Community School in 2015 at our 1801 Federal Blvd. headquarters. This Denver Public School is grounded in the belief that all young people deserve the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, build meaningful and marketable career skills, grow as critical thinkers and leaders, and positively impact their community. YouthBuild participants will attend the school. Andre Baggett talks about his YouthBuild experience. I came to YouthBuild because I always liked construction and working with my hands, he said. After earning his GED and completing YouthBuild early, Andre joined MHYC s Energy & Water program. I need to thank everyone who was on my side in my YouthBuild class and kept pushing me to finish. In the future, Andre plans to start a construction apprenticeship with the skills and contacts he has received at MHYC.
