Engaging and Maintaining Suppor/ve Rela/onships with School Systems Carolyn B. Morgan QEM Consultant Professor Department of Mathema9cs Hampton University Hampton, VA 1

Outline Overview of Suppor8ve Rela8onships Collabora8ons with local school systems Collabora8ons with other STEM organiza8ons and ins8tu8ons Conclusions 2

Overview of Suppor8ve Rela8onships Important to establish suppor8ve rela8onships with members of the local STEM school district communi8es Also, beneficial to join forces and partner with global school systems, na8onally STEM recognized organiza8ons, other ins8tu8ons, community groups, etc. 3

Collabora8ons with local School Systems Networking Yields local summer internship opportuni8es for undergraduate students to have early field experiences in formal and informal STEM educa8onal sewngs and to spark an interest in teaching. Provides an infrastructure and environment that will be suppor8ve of future pre service and in service teachers. Pre service teachers will oyen have to conduct their clinical teaching at a local school. Aids the iden8fica8on of individuals in the educa8on community to serve as members of your Advisory Board, mentors, etc. Establishes partnerships and outreach with other secondary schools, etc. and provides a recruitment pipeline of future students Introduces pre service teachers to other STEM and educa8onal professionals via conferences, mee8ngs, etc. Serve as judges at school science fairs and as research mentors to students interested in STEM careers 4

Collabora8ons with local School Systems Fosters good communica8on and interac8on with local school system administrators and personnel and promotes the hiring of future teachers within the district Meet regularly with local teachers and colleagues to review and monitor the exis8ng teacher prepara8on program efforts and to assess their effec8veness in preparing the students to become successful K 12 science and mathema8cs teachers Iden8fy and propose curriculum revisions, faculty professional development needs, etc. to remain current and compe88ve with other similar programs Conduct and publish research on curriculum studies and student/faculty summer research 5

Collabora8ons with local School Systems and community colleges Collaborate on grant funding ini8a8ves NSF funded Mathema8cs Science Partnership : HR PAL partnership includes Hampton University, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News and Norfolk School Divisions, and Paul D. Camp and Thomas Nelson Community Colleges. The collabora8on included 50 algebra/math teachers, 6 Art teachers,10 technology teachers and Hampton University faculty in engineering, mathema8cs, educa8on and humani8es. The goal of program was to engage both higher educa8on and K 12 faculty in building an effec8ve partnership to enhance problem solving skills in algebra. This ini8a8ve addressed the successes of our program with training teachers to embrace the system analysis and design approach to teaching algebra, and how art and technology projects can be successfully implemented into mathema8cs discussions. Program ac8vi8es included providing summer ins8tutes and ongoing professional development for teachers to improve their knowledge and teaching skills. 6

Collabora8ons with other local and global STEM organiza8ons and ins8tu8ons Collaborate on research projects Dr. Clair Berube, Noyce co PI, has been conduc8ng a collabora8ve study of the effects of infusing problembased learning (PBL) into K 12 science methods courses across four universi8es in Virginia. Changes in preservice teachers awtudes surrounding science teaching were measured before and ayer comple8ng a science methods course in which the teachers experienced PBL firsthand as par8cipants and then prac8ced designing their own PBL units for use in their future classrooms. Dr. Carolyn Morgan collaborated with Dr. Anne Charity Hudley, College of William and Mary, and Dr. Chris8ne Mallinson, Univ. of Maryland Bal8more County, on Collabora9ve Research: Assessing the Results of Sociolinguis9c Engagement with K 12 STEM Educa9on in Maryland and Virginia Public and Independent Schools. This effort focuses on the language of African American students. The inves8gators are working toward a fuller understanding of how language varia8on and change affects K 12 STEM teachers' judgments about language differences, pedagogical prac8ces, and student assessments. The researchers are collec8ng informa8on from a group of 60 K 12 STEM educators from public and independent schools who teach African American students in greater Bal8more, Maryland, Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia. 7

Collabora8ons with other local and global STEM organiza8ons and ins8tu8ons Collaborate on summer internship projects to provide students with an opportunity to get an early experience in STEM educa8on in diverse informal educa8onal sewngs Networks established as a result of faculty and students ajending local, regional and na8onal professional educa8on mee8ngs and workshops resulted in internships at: NASA Office of Educa/on Summer of Innova/on President Obama s program to assist K 12 teachers in developing and delivering STEM ac8vi8es to middle school students. Workshops conducted at YMCA, Hampton University, Girls, Inc., Boys and Girls Club, summer camps and other venues. Virginia Commonwealth University Mary and Frances Youth Center Served as a mentor for the Discovery summer program designed to ajract middle school students form the Richmond, VA area to a broad array of educa8onal opportuni8es with a focus on STEM disciplines. Virginia Air and Space Museum Served as science camp counselor and assisted instructors with the crea8on and implementa8on of STEM camp classroom workshops. NASA Langley In support of the Langley Office of Educa8on, K 12 Program Office, assisted with on site tours for middle school students and conduc8ng teacher s STEM focused workshops. 8

Conclusions Engaging and maintaining suppor8ve rela8onships with local and global school systems, na8onally recognized organiza8ons, other ins8tu8ons, community groups, etc. are vital to assure the sustainability and rigor of middle/high school STEM prepara8on programs. Collabora8ons benefit pre service teachers, in service teachers, local school systems, STEM teacher prepara8on programs and the en8re STEM community. Noyce NSF staff and PIs are a strong network and community in support of collabora8ons with school systems and other STEM educa8onal organiza8ons Rela8onships with Local School Systems 9
