7 It could cost you nothing to study with a range of financial support available, dependent on your age and circumstances. Access to Higher Education If you re 24 years old or above Low cost loans are available which you don t pay back if you go on to complete a higher education degree. There s nothing to pay upfront. They do not take household income into account so you can get a loan no matter what you earn. When you complete an Access to Higher Education Diploma and go onto university and complete a degree, the loan is automatically written off and you pay nothing back. If you don t move onto a degree you don t pay back the loan until you are earning over 21,000 a year and payments can be as low as 7.50 per month. Ideal for anyone planning to study popular music at degree level, whether as an instrumentalist, vocalist, composer or producer/technologist. Whatever your specialist interest, you ll learn about music theory and composition and how to conduct accurate and meaningful research, produce coherent reports and make effective presentations. Experience in Sport, an interview and a desire to pursue Sport as a career. Academy for Sport What will I learn? If you are interested in progressing onto a sport degree or foundation degree, such as sports studies, sports development, sport and exercise science, coaching or PE teaching, this course is for you. Fees TBC Baltic The emphasis of the BA (Hons) in Business, Leadership and Management is to further develop your knowledge and understanding and practical skills as you progress through your degree. You will evaluate business management concepts at a strategic level taking into account the external environment in which organisations operate. You will also undertake a research project on a business management related issue or problem. On successful completion of the programme, you could progress onto a master's degree in the field of business management, a professional institute membership diploma, a career in the business field or a postgraduate teaching certificate. 18 Courses Construction Foundation Degree Building Services Engineering Part-time Course code AAA0287 Duration 2 years Start date September 2016 Requirements An interview is required. Fees 5,500 per year Skills Academy for Construction Jobs in building services engineering are varied and the scope of work available ranges from domestic dwellings to historical buildings as well as industrial, commercial and even scientific projects at home and abroad. This area of work has many challenges such as complying with customer requirements and installing equipment unobtrusively in listed buildings. With these challenges comes great levels of job satisfaction, and working in an environment where no two days are the same. Working alongside architects and other professionals you will be designing and overseeing mechanical and electrical systems including electrical and lighting, heating, ventilation and plumbing. The systems you design must be user friendly, easily controlled and energy efficient, as the world looks to sustain resources and lower costs. What will I study? Modules include: Construction environmental and structural technologies Environmental analysis Energy: heat transfer Parametric modelling using REVIT Fundamental mathematics How will I be taught? A combination of lectures, seminars and one to one tutorials. How will I be assessed? Assessment consists of a mixture of individual assignments and tests for each unit. Fees 5,500 per year Baltic UCAS code 0061 If you have an eye for design and an interest in games, this programme is the ideal route into an exciting and fast paced industry. You will work alongside games and design professionals and use industry standard equipment to produce quality media products for various platforms and contribute to stunning, exciting games and visual effects. You will take part in practical and purpose-driven masterclasses in which you will develop a broad mix of contemporary and traditional skills. What will I study? Year 1: Contextual studies and research techniques for creative media production. Practical skills for game animation. Drawing techniques for concept art. 2D digital graphics. 3D computer game engines. Year 2: Project design, implementation and evaluation. Special subject investigation for creative media production. Career development for the computer games industry. 3D modelling, 3D environments and 3D animation. CGI rendering and lighting. 3D character animation. How will I be taught? 24 Courses Creative Industries BA (HONS) Dance Professional Practice Full-time Course code AAA0543 Duration 3 years Start date September 2016 Requirements An interview is required. Fees 5,995 per year Baltic /Dance City Unlike many dance degrees this programme has a strong emphasis on improving your dance technique as well as developing your teaching abilities, allowing you to go onto a long and varied career in the dance industry. You ll spend up to 75% of your study time in the dance studio, undergoing rigorous technical training in all aspects of dance, backed by theoretical study and practical demonstrations in how to teach dance. Splitting your time between Gateshead College and Dance City, you ll be surrounded by dance professionals and touring companies, ensuring you re ideally placed to build a network of contacts and be at the front of the queue for work opportunities. What will I study? The programme is divided into three areas; professional technique and creativity, how to work in education and work in the community, ensuring you have the required skills for a successful career as a professional dance practitioner. 1. Professional practice These modules will develop your abilities and physical understanding of accurate and artistic dance technique. You will cover a wide range of classical and contemporary styles including ballet, contemporary, urban/street, jazz, and world dance. Working with a diverse range of professional choreographers, you will gain an understanding of their varying choreographic practices and learn how to develop your own style and ideas and how to stage a performance. 2. Education You will learn about the principles of current teaching practice and how to develop and adapt material to be relevant to different ages and cognitive and physical abilities. You will also cover the historical context of dance and choreography. Guest teachers will lead classes and you will take part in teaching placements in schools and community settings in Year 2. 25 Creative Industries 3. Community This element of the course will prepare you to be a responsible and versatile teacher and manager of community projects. You will study Pilates technique, anatomy and technical dance awareness and safety along with essential dance management subjects such as dance and the law, child protection, risk assessments, managing budgets and proposal writing. You will also look at the current dance industry and choreographers working in the international dance scene today. Modules Professional practice modules: Dance technique Dance in performance Supporting techniques Education modules: The fundamentals of dance teaching Historical dance and choreography Dance teaching and teaching practice Community modules: Dance management Teaching in the community Choreographers today In year three you can choose one of two pathways: Pathway one Dance performance, dance teaching, project leadership, creating dance and work based learning. Pathway two Project leadership, dance teaching, work based learning, arts administration and a research project. How will I be taught? A mixture of classroom, practical and workshop activity. How will I be assessed? Assessment of modules includes a mix of assignments, reports, presentations, case studies and practical work based portfolios. Qualifications needed 280 UCAS points and GCSEs grade A*- C in English language and maths. 3 A levels or a BTEC Extended Diploma (DMM or above) or their equivalent, such as an HEFC. Mature students may be offered a place without these qualifications, depending on a successful interview and audition. Requirements You'll be required to undertake a practical audition and interview and you'll need to be able to demonstrate a high level of competency in at least one recognised dance technique. You'll also need a DBS Check (Disclosure and Barring Service for working with children). A good knowledge of classical and contemporary techniques would be an advantage as would the ability to develop choreography and work creatively. 26 Courses Creative Industries HND Music Production Full-time Course code AAA0545 Duration 2 years Start date September 2016 Requirements An interview is required. Fees 5,500 per year Baltic UCAS code 437W This programme is aimed at musicians, programmers, technologists and producers who would like to understand the whole production process from composing through to recording and distribution. The curriculum is approximately 55% prescriptive and 45% student-designed assignment, to encourage you to pursue entrepreneurial activities. We want you to leave us with a CV packed with experience and an impressive portfolio to place you in an ideal position to launch your music career. On the way you ll learn how to apply your musical skills and your understanding of music technology to production projects, sharpen your technical skills and work professionally with clients. What will I study? Practical music production using our in-house production suites How to make and sell music How to work with and learn from industry professionals How to build a portfolio of high quality work An understanding of sound technology and theory How will I be taught? A mixture of classroom, practical and workshop activity. How will I be assessed? A mixture of assessment methods will be used on this programme, including assignments, the production of a portfolio and observation of practice in the workplace to evidence competency. Qualifications needed Three merits in a related National Diploma, a level 3 qualification or 240 UCAS points are a basic requirement. 27 Creative Industries Foundation Degree Popular Music Full-time Course code AAA0151 Duration 2 years Start date September 2016 Requirements An interview is required. Fees 5,500 per year Baltic UCAS code W342 This programme is aimed at those wanting to pursue an all-round music degree with a strong emphasis on work based learning and skills development across a wide area of subjects. Upon successful completion you could apply for the BA (Hons) Contemporary Popular Music (top up) one year programme, validated by Northumbria University. Alternatively you will be well prepared to go straight into employment in the music industry. Relevant and high quality work experience placements, employer mentoring, networking and commercial projects will help you to do this and are an important part of your study programme. Previous students have gone on to work as musicians both locally and around the world. What will I study? The programme consists of six modules per year. They are all practice based modules that build useful skills and knowledge for the working musician. Year 1: Theory and score preparation of popular music Popular music in context Aural perception Ensemble skills 1 Instrument specific skills 1 Music technology Year 2: Writing commissioned music Song writing Ensemble skills 2 Teaching music Music production Instrument specific skills 2 and recital How will I be taught? A mix of practical work and theory, all shaped around the technical skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. How will I be assessed? Assessment will be via the submission of a portfolio at the end of the programme. Qualifications needed 160 UCAS points and GCSEs grade A*- C in English and maths. A Level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant area, including: a BTEC National Diploma or Certificate, a Level 3 Extended Diploma, a Level 3 Diploma (with at least one Merit), or any equivalent qualification. Fees 5,995 Baltic UCAS code W341 This progamme is ideal if you want to top up a Foundation Degree or a HND to BA (Hons) level. Upon completion of the programme you ll be fully prepared for employment in the music industry. You ll have the opportunity to take part in fantastic work based learning projects and workshops in performing, teaching, creative studio projects, optional dissertation, working in the music industry and an individual project that you can tailor to your own interests and specialisms. Networking is an essential part of working in music and our teaching team are on hand to help you develop a list of key contacts and make connections with top class venues, events, festivals, and professional music services. Previous students have gone on to work as musicians both locally and around the world. 28 What will I study? Additional Requirements Performance pathway: As part of your audition you will need to perform segments from two contrasting pieces of music and will also be asked to complete a short theory paper. Fees 5,995 per year Baltic If you re interested in a career as a performer in theatre, the media, or as a community arts worker, facilitator or teacher, then this multi-disciplined performing arts degree programme is for you. The programme is designed to appeal to students who wish to practically explore the many and varied disciplines within performing arts. You can take advantage of college partnerships with local performance venues and companies, such as Live Theatre, Northern Stage, Sage Gateshead and Dance City. What will I study? 31 Creative Industries How will I be taught? You will work on performance projects culminating in a large-scale public productions performed either in college or a local professional or community venue. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed on a module by module basis and there are no formal examinations. Assignments often take the form of practical rehearsal and performance projects, presentations, seminars, essays, reports and portfolios.
