Mrs. Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin Minister of Tourism Dear Readers, Another piece of history is being written, Haiti is budding as a tourist destination. This news is spreading like a wildfire, our destination is gaining grounds on the world stage during the first quarter of All of these developments are a result of our tireless efforts in recent years. The increase in the number of tourist arrivals, augmentation of the number of available hotel rooms, the advertising campaign in the State of New York are some of the palpable facts of the tangible progress in the sector. The opening, of the Marriott Hotel at the end of February in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's hotel portfolio is expanding both in quantity but also and especially in quality. Marriott joins other large chain hotels already operating in Haiti such as NH, Occidental and Best Western Premier. For our part, we can only encourage tourism investment. As such, we welcome this investment of 45 million USD subject to enormous economic benefits for the country. This quarter also brings us other accomplishments as a result of our work for the past three years. Tui France has just opened in Haiti. "It is the role of TUI France as a leader in the French tourism market to support a country with such a strong potential, such as Haiti, and have travelers discover it," says Pascal de Izaguirre, President of TUI France. Our tireless energy and enthusiasm for the sector's growth continues. We have, in this sense, launched a television campaign to promote the destination through American televisions in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The campaign "HaitiExperienceIt" which is are two 30 second mini spots is the first tourism campaign to attract more tourists to visit our "beloved Haiti." The entire tourism industry is moving at the beginning of the year. Indeed, Air Transat which propelled Haiti by proposing packages to the destination since 2013 is strengthening its range. And the boost from Jet Blue which plans to offer flights from Boston to Port-au-Prince during summer. We must also note also our presence at the prestigious ITB Berlin in Germany for the second time in early March. It was an opportunity to showcase the destination on the international stage in the midst of connoisseurs of the industry. This year, Haiti was honored to receive on its stand the Decameron Hotels and Resorts at its stand. Haiti is a tourist destination of choice in the Caribbean. It is indeed the soul of the Caribbean region. This spring, do not hesitate for a second to visit the distinction of our sunny beaches, our appetizing gastronomy, our original crafts, etc. Haiti... Live the Experience!!! Ayiti, Se La Pou w La! Haïti Vivez l Expérience!!! 6 Heartbeat Gardy Girault Hear the World, No Passport Required By Sarah Dupuy & Daphney Valsaint Malandre Photos by Ludmillo Pierre Gardy's passion for world beat/electronica spices up the atmosphere wherever you re lucky enough to find him. His music, a mix of electronic music and Haitian traditional music (rara and konpa) has rapidly become a trend. Many other DJs have joined this movement with this new sound that he proudly refers to as Raratech and Konpatech, introducing a whole new flavor to local parties. Gardy picked up the violin at a young age, but because of a personal turning point in life, the lessons stopped. With music still first in his heart, he nevertheless went to college majoring in Business Management. Upon graduation, he began traveling the world and sojourned in countries such as Mexico, Jamaica, Spain, and Brazil, where his love for music only grew as he discovered the beats of every place he visited. His great appreciation for Haitian music was at the core of all the sounds he listened to. Deciding it was time to scratch his musical itch, he started systematically collecting music and sharing it at parties and homes in Haiti. Laurence Girault, his wife, believed in his dream and stood by her husband and helped him achieve his goals. It was after the earthquake in 2010 that his love for music took on a new dimension and meaning. He created Sunset 4 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

Elevhaitan with his friend Fresh Nunas from Mozambique, and as the play on the word elevation hints, this was all about lifting people s spirits after the devastating earthquake. He was taking a two week break in Miami when he was asked to DJ for an event at the World Music Center (WMC) in That's when his career took another big step forward. Gardy is the first Haitian DJ living in Haiti to introduce Haitian Rara and Konpa music fused with electronic music into the music scene. His selections and musical productions were so well received and appreciated that a well-known New York label, Nulu Music, sub division of Vega Records, offered him a record deal. This experience affirmed his desire to uplift through music and a path continues to blaze before him to do just that. Fast forward to today, Gardy and Laurence joined forces with Dario Marra, a life-long acquaintance and promoter, to create No Passport. We re not doing anything typical like events where the music is generally commercial and pop. Haiti has such a rich musical heritage, we wanted to bring some of that out and let people enjoy it in a different way, says Dario with much pride. After the earthquake, there was a large international community in Haiti that also appreciated something different. Between the diversity of listeners and music, No Passport was ready to board passengers on Gardy s eclectic, rhythmic ride of liberating music for the soul. No boundaries and no confinement! I want to give people a chance to just be themselves with no pretenses. I want them to express themselves natural, easy, and free, Gardy explains. Naturally, the grooving crowd that gathers at the trio s events reflects the diversity of the music. Another unique aspect of No Passport is the presence of visual art. Rotating exhibits and artists are showcased adding to the flavor of Gardy s beats. Initially spinning at Garden Studios, the next stop for this throw down of electric soul was the intimate Press Café in Pétion-Ville. As the event kept attracting more and more people, it was moved to larger locales including Royal Oasis and the Pétion-Ville Club. Gardy produces music, which explains his impeccable ear for unexpected twists just when you think you know where this musical flight is taking you. His first track, Reminiscence. featuring Malou Beauvoir the girl behind Voodoo Bounce, came out in A few other tracks followed in the next months. Five years later, he released his first mix tape, Sounds in my head / Son andedan tèt mwen featuring his most famous remixes of songs such as John Legend s All of Me, and Lana Del Rey s Young and Beautiful. The mix tape is now available at Radio One (Peguy-Ville), Epicure (Pétion- Ville), and Yuka Restaurant (Bois Verna). But the best is yet to come as this mix tape is nothing but a teaser announcing his first album which will feature some well-known Haitian artists. With the clever mixing of electronic beats, there are no limits on Gardy s vessel. You can even unfasten your seat belt. He actually wants you to. If you want to book your next musical sojourn, please visit Gardy Girault's Facebook and Soundcloud page, and stop by itunes or beatport to purchase some of his tracks. After that, I doubt you would want to miss his next event. Make sure you check any stress you may have at the door, and we ll see you on the dance floor! 8 Words in Print Nadege Fleurimond Preserving our culinary heritage A caterer and event planner in New York City, Nadege Fleurimond has made many culinary strides throughout her career. After receiving her bachelor s degree in political science from Columbia University, she went on to cater and later plan both corporate and social events. In addition to appearing on the national television show Chopped, she has catered for some of the top venues and individuals in the By Kristine Belizaire Photos by Ludmillo Pierre United States such as BET, The Colbert Report, Vivica Fox, and Dr. Oz. I met Nadege at the grand tasting event during Haiti s Food and Spirit Festival last September. During this principal gastronomical event, I sampled some of her succulent dishes, including a coconutcrusted French toast with a kremas glaze (somewhat like eggnog), a mixed fruit salad 6 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

with a passion fruit and rum sauce, and mini egg frittatas with smoked herring. Her energy was infectious and her food was so appetizing. I knew that I had to hear her story. Nadege tells me that her original career plan did not involve the culinary field. I didn't decide, it really kind of just happened. During my third year in college, I just started cooking for friends for events. And then it grew into cooking for administrators, professors and others. People always complimented me on my food. Even though a good portion of my clientele is not Haitian, they always appreciated the unique touches I brought to whatever event I was catering. It was important for Nadege to provide a broader culinary perspective to Haitians. Food is culture, and I think it's important for Haitians living abroad and also for Haitians living in Haiti to get a full picture of their country s culinary diversity so that it can be infuse in our cooking practices, she explains. This vision led to the creation of her cookbook titled Haiti Uncovered: A Regional Adventure into the Art of Haitian Cuisine, which was officially released in November. I wanted us to have a book that could really help us preserve some of our culinary heritage. While I think it's great that individuals such as me explore and broaden our cuisine by experimenting, I think it's just as important for us to understand and appreciate the foundation as well. In February, she returned to Haiti and even held a book signing at La Reserve. When I returned to Haiti, I visited Cité Soleil where I spoke to the youth and women about entrepreneurship, cultural pride, food, and culinary careers. It was amazing and inspiring, she tells me. Writing and preparing the book was also a learning experience for her. I worked on the project for about a year, but really gave it my full attention the last 7 months. I travelled throughout the country and spoke to folks. I experienced life in the various departments. Not just to document recipes, but to better understand the people. Her coffee table cookbook is filled with recipes that are really close to her MARCH / APRIL 2015 MAGIC HAITI 7

heart. I love all of them, but I am particularly excited about lalo! I've had it, but never experienced it in Gonaives, where it originated. Tchaka is also something that sometimes we don't value. Our food is amazing and if we package it as good as it taste, everyone will want it. In writing her book, her goal was to allow the readers to feel connected to Haiti and its food. I want everyone who reads the book to want to pack their bags to experience Gelee, Port Salut, and Cap-Haitien. The book is here to tell folks that Haiti is a beautiful place. Not just in terms of physical, but also that beauty exists in everything. It exists in the struggles, the dirt, the mothers who work so hard to send their children to school, the kids in their colorful uniforms, the homes in Kenscoff, the papita merchants, the traffic and bustle of Delmas. It exists in everything. We just have to open our eyes and see beyond. Though she grew up in the United States, she sees Haiti as part of her future. My plan is and has always been to create initiatives that will benefit Haiti. I think people are so shocked that I am so Haiti focused when I left at such an early age, 7 to be exact. But as Emeline Michel says in her song, mwen pa ka Lage'w, "ou ka wete'm andedan peyi mwen, ou pa ka wete peyi anndan mwen". Haiti is in us! 11 Artmosphere By Mildred Boivert Photos by Plesius Junior Louis Born June 12, 1977, Flambert Smith is a third generation artist of the Saint Soleil Movement. His father, Antoine Smith, was introduced to painting and learned directly from the movement s founder, Jean Claude Garoute Tiga. A young Flambert Smith often played drums for the early movement s exhibits and theatrical performances before coming into his own as a painter. The Saint Soleil Movement started in 1973 in the Soissonla-Montagne neighborhood of Pétion-Ville by Tiga and Maud Robart. The art is characterized by bright colors, semi-abstract figures, and incorporates nature and vodou spirituality. Tiga has often been quoted describing it as a mix of dream, possession, creation, and madness. In addition to his father, Flambert Smith comes from a family of talented painters including Denis Smith, Saint-Jacques Smith, and Jocelyn Smith. As a young boy, he remembers being Flambert Smith and Sun s Inspiration the MARCH / APRIL 2015 MAGIC HAITI 9

That way an artist is never forced to sell himself short and both man and work maintain value and integrity. An electrician and plumber by trade, Flambert loves his job, but art is his passion. Since his father s death in 2009, Flambert has focused on painting, already appearing in shows locally at the Institut Français and the U.S. Embassy. His works have been exposed internationally as well in Brazil, Costa Rica, and the United States. With a gleam in his eye, he tells how he would like his work to travel the world, even if he cannot. The Saint Soleil Movement cannot be lost; the world is already in love with it. You can see works of the other members of the Saint Soleil Movement at the Soisson-la- Montagne Atelier. To purchase Flambert's artwork or to inquire about the Saint- Soleil Movemnt call curious and watching his father. He believes it s very important that the artist himself discovers his passion. Out of his eight siblings, only Flambert and his two brothers, Wagner and Julio, paint. He shares that he always loved it and was drawn to it. He started shadowing his father and by the age of 13, Flambert was painting his own pieces. His inspiration? The sun. Flambert feels it is the sun that directs him, tells him when and what to paint. It depends on which ray hits you when you re ready to paint. It s a force you connect with. You get a message, the artist explains. He adds he may start with an image, but the inspiration changes and the idea turns to something else.. When asked to give the meaning of one of his pieces, he refuses. 13 Take the Plunge Swim for Haiti An adventure into Haiti s waters By James Obarowski Photos by James Obarowski & La Gonâve Bay was so calm as it reflected the blue sky and our boats like a mirror, Swim for Haiti couldn t have asked for better conditions for their annual event. This 4.8 mile open water swim takes place each February on the Côte des Arcadins, the north coast just one hour from Port-au-Prince. The coast is named for the Arcadins islands which lie between the main island of Haiti and the Island of La Gonâve and is speckled with some of Haiti s best known resorts, interspersed between beautiful homes and wild coastline. Club Indigo, Moulin Sur Mer, Wahoo Bay, Ouanga Bay, Kaliko Beach Club, just to name a few, offer a range of experiences and activities, not to mention sun and the pastel MARCH / APRIL 2015 MAGIC HAITI 11

colors of the Caribbean sea. On February 8 th at 7:30 on a beautiful Saturday morning, 20 swimmers set off along with three support boats, jet skis, and 20 local fishermen in canoes to the Arcadins Islands, their starting point. The swimmers were given yellow swim caps to help with visibility, and each was assigned a local Haitian fisherman to follow just a few feet away, carrying water, snacks, a mission to keep the swimmers on track so that they safely reach their destination, barely visible from the starting point. The wooden canoes, carved out of tree trunks and the fisherman in their broad hats made this competition a thoroughly Haitian affair. Swimmers of all ages, the oldest swimmer was 50 something and the youngest was 13, participated in this annual event. And the group included men and women, Haitians and expatriates, with several swimmers flying to Haiti just for this event. Shortly after the race began, they fell into a quiet rhythm. The support boats hung back and took in the scenery the sky felt absolutely enormous above us, puffy white clouds providing some contrast and occasional shade. The canoes paddled along in the calm water. Within an hour, some other fisherman came over in small, handcrafted wooden sailboats to see what our giant flotilla was up to. After pointing in disbelief at the swimmers, they continued on for the day s catch. Slowly but surely, the swimmers steady and determined strokes drew them closer to the shore. As they approached the long white beach, friends, family 12 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

and a few locals amassed to welcome and congratulate them. Exhausted but in good spirits, one by one they drew themselves out of the water. With their feet on solid ground, the swimmers were met with towels, water and snacks. Swim for Haiti is annual event designed to showcase the beauty of the Côte des Arcadins area and raises money for two meaningful causes: one social and one environmental. The first is a program to teach Haitian children the basics of swimming, as the vast majority, even those living right on the water, do not know how. The second is FoProBim, a Haitian marine environment cleanup and restoration initiative. Swimmers raise funding through supporters for their participation, and the event is managed by SwimTrek. If you are going to be in Haiti early February 2016, register to participate. You are in for a surprise. Be part of the fun as you help to make a difference. 16 Escapade Port-au-Prince: New Home to a Four Star Giant By Roxane Kerby Photos by Ludmillo D. Pierre And yes, March 1, 2015, is definitely a date many will remember. And, finally on this beautiful Sunday morning, the doors to hotel giant, Marriott, officially opened to the public. In the middle of Turgeau, the imposing structure stands proud and tall and I was anxious to explore its premises. I had a very strong feeling that Haitian art would permeate this Marriott as the exterior already showcased metal decoupé long before a client walked through its doors. I was immediately captivated as I crossed the threshold. Known for its vast lobbies, the sleek modern Marriott Port-au-Prince was very Haitian. Everywhere and I 14 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

mean everywhere Haitian art is front and center. Our country s rich culture had definitely permeated the four star hotel and what a striking harmony. From the mosaic by the reception, the metal decoupé partitions that separate the spaces, the imposing Saint Soleil paintings, the striking metal decoupé siren behind the bar, to the mosaic wall in the restaurant, wooden bowls, tobacco paper maché vases, large photographs, stone sculptures, paintings, sequined vodou flags, to recycled textile tapestries, Haitian art also stood proud and tall. Each of the 175 rooms, floor, and lobby has a Haitian flair. Irish architect Nikki O Donnell was able to accomplish this feat with renowned Haitian artist Phillipe Dodard with the assistance of Monique Gardère. My goal was to choose artists from diverse genres to demonstrate the importance of integrating Haitian art in the national reconstruction to preserve cultural heritage and to promote our national identity, Mr. Dodard, the hotel s curator shares with me with pride in his voice, stance and eyes. It is therefore not surprising that more than 1,500 works of art and artisanat were selected. The rein of the Marriott Port-au-Prince, which displays our culture with such panache, rests upon the shoulders of MARCH / APRIL 2015 MAGIC HAITI 15

a sleeping giant. Peter Antinoph, a warm and dynamic individual, chose to leave the chain s most luxurious hotel on the famed Champs Elysées to come to Turgeau. His career at the Marriott began in Russia in the 80 s at which time he was asked to upgrade the Marriott s kitchens. Since then, he has worked in many countries, on many continents, and now he is here determined to make a difference. In addition to the prominent presence of Haitian art, Peter has surrounded himself with women. All four of his top managers are women and more importantly, two of them are Haitian. Sharon Sylhomme, who has risen through the ranks within the Marriott, set foot on her parents homeland for the first time to assume role as Financial Director. While her colleague Edwige Solage, Human Resource Director, was born here in Haiti. At the age of 12 she leaves Haiti and travels to France, Africa and then United States. And she too has been a long time Marriott employee. What was equally took be back after a year of employment, staff members can apply to work at any of the other Marriott s throughout the globe. 16 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

In addition, in the Marriott Port-au-Prince, I was pleasantly surprised to find Ayiti Natives beauty products made from local Haitian herbs, nuts and fruits. TOMS shoes is providing custom-designed shoes made in Haiti for each of the hotel s staff. Procuring produce from small local businesses, social companies, and agricultural co-ops is the hotel s policy. They have been working with farmers for more than a year to help them produce, package and transport fruits and vegetables in ways that meet the quality, yield and lower waste standards of the hospitality industry. Not just art, but all things Haitian. Marriott Port-au-Prince guests will benefit from a restaurant, a bar, the Rebo Coffee Shop, five meeting / conference rooms with a plenary hall, swimming pool, fitness club, and all the other amenities befitting a four star hotel. As I delve into the why the international hotel chain giant is ensconced on our island, I am told that after the 2010 earthquake, the Marriott s employees, of which thousands are Haitian - Americans, urged the chain to be implicated in the reconstruction of Haiti by establishing a hotel in the country. Marriott International approached former President Bill Clinton, Clinton Global Initiative, who in turn introduced them to Denis O Brien, President and Founder of Digicel Group, a telecommunications provider which is very present in the Caribbean market and also operates in Central America and Asia Pacific. And the rest as they is the beginning of a beautiful and long history. A history which has begun with an homage to Haitian art, a history as an economic engine, a history committed to training and professionalism, a history of hope, and playing a role in Haiti s history as it regain its position not only as La Perle des Antilles, but the Beacon of the Caribbean. The brothers are expanding their drink and tapas menu, but for now customers can choose from delectable small plates such as tuna tartare, shrimp skewers, chicken dip, and spinach artichoke dip. My personal favorite are the silky and sumptuous chicken livers served on crispy toast rounds and garnished with green grapes. In the future, they hope to create mixology courses and seminars for clients. We want to help them to learn about bars and how easy it can be to use one, explains Herbert. With their unique creations and positive attitude for the future of Haiti s bar scene, the Linge brothers are changing the way that cocktails are viewed in Haiti. Follow their motto: Head to Shakerz and shake the night away! Shakerz is located on 45 Rue Faubert, Pétion-Ville. Hours of operation are 5:00 pm to 1:00 am on Thursdays and Fridays and from 4:00 pm to 1:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

Let s Talk! Ann Pale! By Christina Jean-Louis Illustration by Teddy Kesser Mombrun Nou tout se Ayiti! We are all Haiti! Carnival s theme is very appropriate and it s empowering to remember that we are all in it together. While it is so easy to emphasize our differences in such a diverse world, we must return to connection. While we come in a variety of shades and experiences, our diversity fosters innovation, authenticity, strength, and continued hope. Join us this month in reveling together as our national moto calls us to recurrently live out this simple truth, L union fait la force. Unity makes us strong. I am Haiti We are Haiti I have power We have power I have strength We have strength I am proud We are proud I love/like you We love/like you I am worthy We are worthy I am free We are free Mwen se Ayiti Nou se Ayiti Nou gen pouvwa Nou gen pouvwa Mwen gen fòs Nou gen fòs Mwen fyè Nou fyè Mwen renmen ou Nou renmen ou Mwen gen merite Nou gen merite Mwen lib Nou lib As you continue to indulge in what makes us special throughout your stay, remember we are all in it together. Our peculiarities do not need to create division. We can always choose to enrich ourselves and open our eyes to a rich mixture of people. Men anpil chay pa lou Many hands make lighten the burden. 24 Spotlight Manuel de Heusch-Desquiron Charting a New Path By Rachele Viard Photos by Plesius Junior Louis It is rare that someone is so open and raw when speaking about something deeply personal and life changing that s ccurred in their life. And yet when it happens it can affect a great number of people, sometimes altering their lives. I suppose that is why Manuel de Heusch-Desquiron agreed to speak with me about the motorcycle accident that changed his life, and propelled him as a champion for the disabled. It was a great pleasure to have the chance to sit down with Mr. Desquiron, though I must say I wasn t expecting such candidness during our interview as the nature of the subject was quite personal. With a pleasant smile and warm and demeanor, he greeted me and without hesitation he began to tell his story. My eyes were drawn to a tattoo on the inside of his wrist. I prompted him and began the interview by asking him about the tattoo, which appeared to be It s the date the accident took place and the tattoo servers as a reminder, he says. Though he wasn t supposed to race that day during the competition between Haitian and 22 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015

Dominican riders, with his son competing and winning his race and his friends out there having a good time he got the urge to partake in the event. Adrenaline on high. And in one quick moment the direction of his life changed. A malfunction with the seat of the motorcycle resulted in a fall and the bike crashing down on his back. After waiting 9 hours to be airlifted to Miami s Jackson Memorial Hospital, and two surgeries later he began the long road to recovery. When I asked him, what his motivation was to keep pushing through to find his sense of normalcy again he replied with a trace of a smile on his face, I m a fighter, I always was and I still had a lot of living to do. Keeping that in mind after spending six months in the United States focusing on physical therapy and getting better, he returned to Haiti ready to get back to living his life. He mentions that he has a strong support system, Christine, his wife, who he describes as a strong woman, his kids, who he describes as super and wonderful friends. They all helped him get back to living his life. With needed modifications like elevators and ramps at his offices at EuroCeram, as well as his car which he still MARCH / APRIL 2015 MAGIC HAITI 23

Now Vice President of Helping Hands in Haiti, an organization which provides aid to the disabled community and strives to make their lives easier and ensure that they are respected as human beings. Not everyone can be airlifted to the United States after an injury, so it is therefore very important that the private sector invest in modernizing hospitals so that these institutions can provide quality neurological care as well as other services which meet international norms and standards, he stated with conviction. He has become an advocate, a strong and powerful voice for the disabled. Some are born with impairments others become impaired after an accident it can happen to anyone. Think about it and let s push programs such as MEDISHARE and establish a Haitian stateof- the-art trauma center. Through personal interaction he is making business owners aware of how difficult it is for him and others in wheelchairs to shop and frequent their establishments without the needed modifications. Spending the morning with Mr. Desquiron, was a great pleasure and quite inspiring. He really has turned his tragedy into victory. As he always says One life, one love. 24 MAGIC HAITI MARCH / APRIL 2015
