More than half the world s Jews have their roots in prewar Poland. During the lecture you will find out if it s difficult to discover them and you will learn practical methods in searching for them (in English). Join author Shana Penn (USA) and filmmaker Marta Dzido (Poland) in presenting a new edition of the award-winning Sekret Solidarności and the Krakow film premiere of Solidarność według kobiet. We will have a special viewing of Marta Dzido s new documentary Solidarność według kobiet, after which Dzido and Shana Penn, who appears in the film, will have a conversation with efka director Sławomira Walczewska and New Eastern Europe editor Iwona Reichardt, to discuss women s activism in Solidarity. The respective portrayals, by Penn and Dzido, of women s experiences and recollections shed insight on the underlying gender dynamics that shaped the opposition, calling into question the character of democratic norms in the 1980s and how these accepted norms impacted post-1989 Polish society. Penn, an American, and Dzido, of a younger generation, conducted their projects in very different time periods, which influenced their research experiences and analyses in fascinating ways, all to be discussed in this session (in English). Pickling 101: Reviving Jewish Food Traditions by Jeffrey Yoskowitz (in English) Pickling vegetables is at the heart of Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, which is why a really delicious and crunchy sour pickle can conjure memories of the a local delicatessen or a pastrami sandwich. Come learn how to make pickles using traditional methods and discover the history of vegetable fermentation, the importance of food preservation and its place in Jewish cuisine. Do-it-yourself pickling connects us to the seasons and Jewish culinary culture. You will leave with a jar of soon-to-be pickled vegetables. Jeffrey Yoskowitz is the co-founder and chief pickler of The Gefilteria, the Brooklyn-based artisanal Jewish food company. He is also the pickler-in-residence at Peck s Specialty Foods in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. In 2014 he was named to Forbes Magazine s 30 under 30 list in Food and Wine and last year he was named by the Forward Newspaper to its list of 50 influential people in the Jewish world. 9 ABOUT THE PROGRAM RSVP FOR WORKSHOPS or Eating, dancing and singing A series of workshops led by JCC members, presenting different trends in Jewish cooking, dancing, and singing. Israeli Dance Workshop In Israeli dances one can see influences of different dancing traditions which perfectly reflect the multiculturalism of Israel. We will explore dances with Greek, Yemen, Balkan, Russian, and even Irish elements. Workshops with the JCC Choir An opportunity to learn well and less known songs in Hebrew and Yiddish. On Friday, before Shabbat begins, we will learn the most popular Shabbat songs. Culinary workshop During the workshop we will move to a NY Jewish Deli and we will try the specialties that European Jews brought with them to US at the beginning of the 20th century. The workshop will be an occasion to prepare and try crispy matzah brei, traditional Jewish caviar, which is chopped liver, and many more treats

10 Jewish Life in Interwar Krakow A series of presentations and discussions organized by the Centre for the Study of the History and Culture of Krakow Jews, Jagiellonian University in Krakow and JCC Krakow. Jewish Life in Interwar Krakow is dedicated to selected aspects of Jewish life in interwar Krakow. During this period, more than 60,000 local Jews made up 25% of Krakow s population. Their activities crossed the borders of the old Jewish quarter and went beyond traditional religious life. The series of discussions with young graduates from the Institute of Jewish Studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow will be led by Dr. Edyta Gawron. Prelimud in the JCC Prelimud is an educational program affiliated with the Polish edition of the international Limmud movement which is run every year in Warsaw by the JDC. During the Jewish Culture Festival, young Jewish people from Krakow lecture about topics connected to Jewish history, religion, and culture. The Five Books of Avi For 5 days, Krakow Rabbi, Avi Baumol will use objects, texts, photos, and music to explore one theme from each of the Five Books of Moses. Gimel-mania.
