Background The Associate of Science Business for Healthcare Professionals degree program is 64 semester credit hours of training; with 62.5% of the courses in the Specialty. The Associate of Science Business for Healthcare Professionals degree program faculty consists of 5 members; each holding a Master s or higher degree. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Describe what the program is designed to achieve and explain how it is structured in order to accomplish the objectives. The Associate in Business for Healthcare Program (ABHP) is designed to prepare students for careers in managing healthcare organizations. Today, the average worker changes careers an average of four times. The ABHP will give students a solid foundation in the management skills necessary to manage a medical practice. As such, ABHP students will have career options open to them that other healthcare workers will not. Many healthcare students are focused only on the patient care aspects of their field of study. This program will expose them to the business side of a medical practice. It will also provide students with opportunities to obtain a healthcare degree should they find that direct patient contact is not want they want to do in their careers. The ABHP is structured to provide students with the prerequisite classes necessary to be admitted to the MJS School of Nursing first. Once these classes are completed, students will have the option of applying for admission to the Nursing School or continuing in the Business School. By front loading these nursing prerequisite classes, students will have a chance to think about whether a nursing degree is appropriate for them. If they continue with ABHP classes, they will receive a broad background in business management. Upon completion of the ABHP degree, students will be able to gain entry level positions with both doctors and hospitals as practice managers. They will also be able to start their own healthcare related businesses, should they choose to do so. However, it is not our intent that this be a terminal degree. It is

3 our plan to offer a bachelor's degree. These students will be encouraged to continue towards that degree.
