Chairman s Message I consider it a great privilege to serve on the Crusader Council and work alongside a remarkable group of people, who do a remarkable job, within a remarkable organisation. This past year was a year of great accomplishments. We witnessed record numbers of campers, conducted more school visits than ever before, and installed a new office at the Galston Gorge Conference & Recreation Centre. All these things were made possible because of the efforts of staff and amazing supporters like you, who are driven by God to work together to shape a new generation through the transforming power of the love of Christ. I trust that as you read this report you will find a blessing in knowing you played a part in God s purpose in these stories and thousands more like them. I commend this report to your thorough review. Executive Director s Message The year spanning September 2011 to August 2012 allowed Crusaders to reinforce structures, grow ministry, and identify some possibilities for future expansion. We thank God for His continued provision for us. We have seen wonderful answers to prayer, generous financial support, new opportunities opening, high levels of volunteer involvement, a committed team of staff, and record numbers both on camps and in terms of those reached through schools. On average, each week of the year saw 2,500 students reached through Crusader programs. Praise God! It is significant to note that the work in each of the three ministry areas is not only reaching children but also training a new generation of leaders. At the start of 2013, all three divisions now have fulltime trainees involved: young people who are gaining skills in ministry through Crusaders as well as being supported to do further study through Moore College, Sydney Missionary and Bible College, Youthworks College and Cornhill Sydney. At the end of 2012, 25 of Crusaders 64 staff positions were filled by trainees a staggering 39%. It was also a great pleasure this year to see one of our volunteers and a member of staff collect significant awards at the Christian Venues Association National Conference. Peter Bragg won the Spirit of Sharing Volunteer s Award, for his work over 37 years in organising minibike camps for Crusaders; and Kristy Linton from our Summit team was joint winner of the Youth Award. When a visitor from overseas spent time visiting camps and campsites, and meeting with Crusader staff and Council members during 2012, several decades after he had last led and directed camps and ministered in schools, he wrote the vision remains pure. I am very excited about the future prospects. Thank God for His faithfulness to this ministry over many years and pray that we would be faithful to our Lord and King and bring honour to His name as we hold out the light of the Gospel of Jesus.
History The Crusader Union of Australia is a Bible based, interdenominational Christian youth organisation. Crusaders vision is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the students of the independent schools of Australia, to nurture Christians, encourage church membership and train young Christians for a life of servant leadership. Founded in 1930 with the assistance of the Rev. Dr Howard Guinness, Crusaders has a rich history. Dr Guinness was a visionary man who was keen to strengthen Christian work among school students. He saw voluntary groups as a key to achieving this. From small beginnings in just four schools, Crusaders has now grown to serve 185 Independent Schools in New South Wales and the ACT. In 2012 over 2,500 students were being reached each week with the Gospel.

CRU Camps Over 60 CRU Holiday Camps are run during the school holidays for children aged The camps are run mostly by volunteer leadership teams and the range of activity options include sailing, horse riding, dirt-bike riding, skiing and much more. There are also over a dozen Study Camps each year to help Year 12 students find success, motivation and perspective in their final year of school. On each camp campers engage with the message of Jesus through Bible talks, discussion groups, and interacting with Christian leaders. What a year was had by our CRU Camps division! 3,123 kids attended camps in , almost double the number from ten years ago. CRU Camps continue to play a vital part in reaching students with the Gospel. Our surveys during the year showed that some 80% of those attending Study Camps did not regard themselves as Christians before camp. Praise God that many campers come to faith, and/or are willing to start attending youth groups or CRU Groups following attending camp. We know that over 10% of campers who came on camps over the year became Christians or recommitted their lives to Christ. Thank God for the many volunteer leaders who give of themselves wholeheartedly in preparing for camps, leading on camp, and then following up campers. Nick Hood and his team are to be commended for their prayerful and diligent support for volunteers. This year some 400 leaders were involved in face to face training with our staff, and hundreds of others attended planning meetings and utilised our online resources. Jesse came on camp with the assumption that he wouldn't last the whole week. The longest he had stayed on any camp was morning tea of Day 2, where always, if not before, he had been kicked off for extreme misbehaviour. So after sitting down to have a good chat with him we made a deal to aim for a full week of camp! It was a hard slog! Jesse's upbringing has been one of extreme abuse, violence and rejection. He is an angry young man, with most of that anger directed at himself. His first reaction is violence as it seems to have got him through life so far. He was disturbed to hear that as a 31 year old I have never once been in a fight and that my best defence it to avoid violence at pretty much all costs! Jesse made it to the very last day on camp! He caught the bus home with all the other campers! An experience he had never had despite starting 20 or so camps. On the last day he was missing from our Christian Discovery group, so I went looking for him, he was sitting down near the boys toilets looking teary. When I asked what was wrong he said that he didn't want to go home. He had never felt so accepted in all his life. He knew that it was coming to an end. From a kid who was proud of the fact that he had never lasted more than a day or so on camp to being the guy that never wanted to go home - it's a dramatic change! CRU Camp Leader

Summit Educational Camps Summit provides around 90 fully programmed school camps each year during term time, for schools across NSW and the ACT. Trained professionals in outdoor education run school camps that meet curriculum-based outcomes. Summit Camps also feature a Christian Discovery time where children who may have never heard about Jesus before are introduced to the Gospel. Summit offers the following programs for schools: 1. Primary Activity Camp 2. Secondary Activity Camp 3. Campout/Bivouac Camp 4. Christian Ministry Skills Camp 5. Connect Life Skills Camp 6. Leadership Camp 7. Study Skills Camp (Secondary only) 8. Special Purpose Camps. Summit has now been operating for 25 years. During that time hundreds have been part of the Fellows program, and it is staggering to think how many of these have gone onto leadership roles within Crusaders, in churches and other ministries, both in Australia and around the world. The total number of camps run by Summit increased to 92 in , although the actual number of campers, 6584, was slightly lower than the previous year. In some camps this was due to schools having lower enrolments, but a greater impact was that several schools have a two year camping cycle, and some of the larger ones weren t on camp in the period. It is worth noting that the calendar year 2012 saw 99 Summit camps involving 6973 campers. Nathan McElveney continues to lead the Summit team with great foresight and integrity, and the growth in individual members of the team stems in many ways from Nathan s commitment and leadership. I have been on many camps and I believe that the quality, commitment and involvement of the CRU Leaders to be a cut above all others. This has been true for a number of years and has been again this year. It is a credit to the leaders themselves and to Gary and his team in training young people so well. It keeps us coming! 11 Schools Ministry Crusaders full time staff workers visit schools and run training programs to reach over 45,000 students with the Gospel in independent schools across NSW and the ACT. The Schools Ministry team supports Christian teachers and students, offering resources to schools for lunchtime CRU Groups, training student leaders and giving Bible talks in school chapels and assemblies. In Schools Ministry grew through the implementation of the Schools Ministry Associate program which helped to strengthen our support for several schools as well as providing many opportunities to follow up High School students both in schools and on camps. A total of 750 school visits were made to 183 schools, including several in the ACT. A professional development day was run for 90 Christian teachers & chaplains; 460 student leaders were trained through JLC, SALT and FIT programs; a series of Interschool outreach events in various parts of Sydney reached 530 students; four new CRU Resources were published (two each for primary and secondary schools) and all of this was underpinned with regular, consistent prayer for God s work in schools. Thank God for Peter Crawford s leadership of the Schools Ministry team, his dedication and experience, and for the great commitment shown by the staff. Praise God too for the generous financial support which has allowed this ministry to grow. My CRU Group was really the starting point in my walk with God. If I hadn't been encouraged to go to CRU Group and stayed there because of the fun I was having, I would've never given my life to God. After that decision, it's had two major impacts on my walk with God. Firstly, it has greatly encouraged me to see the other Christians in my year turn up week after week and now to see them actually lead the group encourages me to continue my faith. Secondly, it has helped me understand the idea of servant leadership, it has helped me change my state of mind to one where I should be eager to serve the students in the group. 13 Our Centres Crusaders owns and operates two terrific residential campsites at Galston Gorge and Lake Macquarie. Situated just 15 minutes from Hornsby, the Galston Gorge Conference & Recreation Centre offers groups a great bushland getaway that s close to home. Alternatively, the Lake Mac Outdoor Recreation Centre is a welcoming lakeside campsite with fantastic water-based activities and its own sailing fleet. The Galston Gorge Conference & Recreation Centre continues to attract strong interest from schools, churches and community groups, as well as supporting a large number of Summit and CRU Holiday Camps. The capacity of the site to accommodate multiple groups simultaneously while still allowing each to have their own separate areas is both of benefit to site users and also drives a high level of site occupancy. Galston was utilised for a total of 31,519 camper nights in the year. A key addition to the Galston site in 2012 was the construction of a new office. This facility allowed the Summit team to relocate from the old mini bike garage, providing them with a more productive modern workspace. It similarly allowed the Galston site team to restructure their office area, better facilitating a reception point for site guests. Thank you for the wonderful day our Year 3 boys from Knox had in March The staff were all extremely friendly, helpful and most competent at the activities they provided. Our thanks also to the sensational food provided by your catering team. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all teachers and boys alike. Teacher, Knox Grammar Preparatory School At The Lake Macquarie Outdoor Recreation Centre we have focused on smaller projects to increase guests comfort and safety. We were particularly pleased to be able to acquire a rigid inflatable centre console rescue boat, which has proved invaluable for providing better support for sailing, canoeing and other lake activities. During , the site was utilized for a total of 13,069 camper nights. Len Hedges continues his significant contribution to the Crusaders mission in his oversight of the Camping Ministries. In this he is ably supported by Andrew Reeves and Curtis Sylvester who direct the Galston and Lake Mac campsites respectively. My thanks to these three gentlemen and the great teams that work with them to maximise each campsite s performance. Staff go above and beyond Teacher, Whalan Public School

Training Crusaders Training is a Registered Training Organisation (NTIS No ) offering nationally accredited training in Outdoor Recreation and First Aid. Our Trainer runs all the outdoor activity training for our Summit Trainees ( Fellows ) as well as running Bronze Medallion and First Aid courses for Crusader staff, school teachers, volunteer camp leaders, community organisations, churches and corporate groups. Marketing & Development During 2012, a grant from the Genesis Foundation allowed Crusaders to research the possibility of Day Camps during the school holidays. While we are well aware of some churches that run Day programs in some holiday seasons, we know that many more would like to if they had the support and training to do it. Many of our schools have resources which could be utilized to hold such programs. The research identified significant demand, and the possibility to reach many children who are currently not attending residential camps, possibly due to cultural or socio-economic reasons. We look forward to initiating this program in Donor support has continued to be a great blessing for us. Key events were the Business Luncheon (held in 2012 at the Sofitel Wentworth), Business Breakfast and the Ladies Reception (Girls Night Out). Our two financial appeals at Christmas and in the midyear were also effective, with the generosity of matching gift donors prompting a wonderful response, allowing us to fully fund the renovation of all bathrooms in the en-suite cabins at Galston. Groundwork was also laid for the development of an endowment fund to encourage long term investment in Crusaders ministry. This has now been established and named the Jim Kidd Leadership Fund. I am very thankful for the diligence of Anna Wood as Director of Marketing and Development, and the committed team which she leads. Anna s skill and dedication has been used by God to great effect at Crusaders, and has allowed the building of a solid fundraising base, when none existed around a decade earlier. In addition, her team s marketing of CRU Camps, campsites and school programs has raised awareness of these services and our broader ministry.

Source of Funds Around 80% of Crusaders total revenue is generated from our camps, campsites and other activities. The remaining 20% is crucial for funding Schools Ministry and seeding new programs to reach school students with the Gospel. Given that Crusaders receives no ongoing government or denominational support we are extremely thankful for the generosity of donors whose gifts make a great difference. Crusaders financial reports are regularly reviewed by our Finance Committee, and by Crusader Council, and we are audited annually in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and the Corporations Act. My thanks to both Simon Corbridge and William McLaren who served as Director of Finance during this reporting period. They were both supported by our small but faithful Finance Department who continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure financial diligence. Auditor: Thomas GLC
