3 What is the Australian Indigenous Alcohol? The Knowledge Centre: is a new web resource designed to provide quality, upto-date information about alcohol and other drugs aims to make knowledge readily accessible to inform policy, research, and teaching provides practical support to the workforce and communities 3
4 How did the Knowledge Centre come about? Australian Government s commitment to preventing harmful substance use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and promoting improvements in drug and alcohol and related services for Indigenous people. Underpinned by the concept of harm minimisation and the three pillars of the National Drug Strategy Development of web resource to provide knowledge support for AOD workforce and communities, and decision support to government. 4

7 Two concepts underpin the work of the Knowledge Centre Evidence-based decision making, whereby relevant research and other information is collated and made available to inform the work of practitioners, policy makers and others with a stake in Indigenous health Knowledge transfer, which involves making these research findings available in a way that has immediate, practical utility Implementation of these two concepts involves synthesis, exchange and ethical application of knowledge as part of an ongoing interaction with all stakeholders in Indigenous health 7

20 AOD yarning place When you join a yarning place membership is free you will have access to electronic services that assist members to network, yarn and share information and experiences. There are five elements to the yarning place. 1. The message stick is an list for communicating with other members. 2. The yarning board is an electronic discussion board for debating relevant issues. 3. The mob list provides members' contact details (provision of your details is optional). 4. The yarn now feature similar to a chat room where two or more members can join in live discussion with one another. 5. The events feature - access information, or notify others, about upcoming events related to Indigenous substance use. 20
