FIRST IMPRESSIONS DEAFENING PARIS PARIS Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Bal du Moulin de la Galette, 1876 (detail) Musée d Orsay, Dist. RMN-Grand Palais / Patrice Schmidt In 1859, Claude Monet left Le Havre for the French capital which he nick-named Deafening Paris. Just after the declaration of the Second Empire, Napoleon III ordered a vast public works programme aimed at making Paris more attractive and healthier. In charge of the programme was Baron Haussmann. Paris was undergoing a metamorphosis, transforming not only the capital itself but also the lifestyle of locals; cafés and concert-cafés, brasseries, balls, circuses, operas and theatres, parks and public gardens began springing up. These were places Impressionists loved to go to and their sketches became chronicles of modern life. Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Caillebotte were enthralled with the city and its frenetic life which provided them with new themes. Now, the capital houses the largest collection of Impressionist paintings - including an exceptional ensemble of the works of Claude Monet - and historic sites taking you back to the time of the Impressionists. 9
PLACES TO EXPERIENCE MUSÉE DE L ORANGERIE André Masson considers this the equivalent of the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism. It is home to the Water Lilies mural ensemble that Monet gifted to France. It comprises eight compositions spread over 22 panels filling two oval rooms bathed in natural light thanks to the glass ceiling. The museum also holds other treasures including the Walter-Guillaume collection, a unique collection illustrating the creative work of the first decades of the 20th century. Paul Guillaume, an art dealer and talent-spotter, gradually put together this extraordinary collection, completed and adjusted by his wife, comprising 15 Cézannes, 24 Renoirs, 29 Derains, 22 Soutines (the most important collection in Europe), 12 Picassos, 10 Matisses and 19 Utrillos. Musée de l Orangerie, Place de la concorde, Paris Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day except Tuesdays, May 1st, July 14th (morning) and December 25th. Musée de l Orangerie J.-P. Delagarde MUSÉE MARMOTTAN-MONET This is where one can admire the emblematic painting Impression, Sunrise. In a private residence near the Trocadéro, the museum exhibits a rich collection of works donated by Claude Monet s second son. In the 200 m² area dedicated to the paintings of the master you can admire the canvasses of the Normandy coast, those inspired by his garden at Giverny or during his visit to London. Among other works in the museum by Manet, Renoir, Sisley and Pissarro, you will find a quite delightful collection of oils on canvas, watercolours, pastels and drawings by Berthe Morisot, known as the woman of the Impressionist group. Musée Marmottan-Monet 2 rue Louis Boilly, Paris Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day except Mondays. C.Baraja MUSÉE D ORSAY In 1986 this former train station, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, was turned into a museum dedicated to art from the period This unusual building is home to the greatest Impressionist paintings such as: Olympia and Luncheon on the Grass by Edouard Manet, Women Ironing by Edgar Degas, Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette and The Swing by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Houses of Parliament, London and Rouen Cathedral by Claude Monet. Among the museum s masterpieces, you will find Vincent van Gogh s The Starry Night and The Church at Auvers. Musée d Orsay, 1 rue de la légion d honneur, PARIS Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day except Mondays, May 1st and December 25th. Musée d Orsay / Sophie Boegly MUSÉE DE MONTMARTRE RENOIR GARDENS In the heart of a group of 17th and 18th century buildings, the museum looks over vineyards and opens out onto a view offering a glimpse of the Seine Valley. Here, on the very spot where Renoir had his studio (where he painted, among others, Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette and The Swing ) one can relive the glory days of the Butte. Paintings, posters and scores illustrate the artistic effervescence that reigned around the Montmartre cabarets. The museum is surrounded by three gardens, directly inspired by Renoir s works. Since October 2014, the studioapartment of Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo has also been open to visitors. Musée de Montmartre - Jardins Renoir 12 rue Cortot, Paris Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day. CRT Paris Île-de-France:
FIRST IMPRESSIONS IMPRESSIO- NISM AT THE GATES OF PARIS BARBIZON, CHATOU, MARLY-LE-ROI, MORET-SUR-LOING, YERRES Claude Monet, La gare Saint-Lazare, 1877 (detail) RMN - Grand Palais / Musée d Orsay / Hervé Lewandowski While the new Paris offered the Impressionists abundant inspiration, developments to the rail roads, improvements in painting materials and the growth in leisure activities would present them with new subjects just a short train ride from the capital. It is in the heart of the Boucle de la Seine, in Impressionist Country, that we find the joyous atmosphere of insouciance, dances and rowing boats that Monet s La Grenouillère and Renoir s Luncheon of the Boating Party depict so wonderfully. Claude Monet, who followed the Seine westwards, passed through Argenteuil and Vétheuil before settling in Giverny. Part of Gustave Caillebotte s output was inspired by the family property in Yerres, east of Paris. 13
PLACES TO EXPERIENCE MUSÉE DES PEINTRES AT BARBIZON A detour via Barbizon, on the outskirts of the Fontainebleau forest, offers a pretext for following in the footsteps of the landscape artists (including Millet and Rousseau) who came before the Impressionists. The museum has two sites and shows the daily life of these alfresco painters from the 19th century. Don t miss the Auberge Ganne with its period furniture and décor and its collection of some 100 works. Musée des peintres at Barbizon 92 grande rue, Barbizon Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day except Tuesdays, May 1st and from December 24th to January 1st. Christophe Brachet PROPRIÉTÉ CAILLEBOTTE Gustave Caillebotte was 12 years old when his parents took over the property in Yerres which would be their summer residence. From 1875 to 1879, he would paint some of his most important works in this family property which includes a main house, several outbuildings, extensive grounds of 11 hectares bordered by a river, follies and a kitchen garden. The property has retained the same appearance as during Caillebotte s day. Propriété Caillebotte, 8 rue de Concy, Yerres Tel: + 33 (0) The grounds are open every day and entry is free / The Casin (reception, gift shop and projection room) are open every day except Mondays from March to November. From December to February, only open on weekends. MAISON FOURNAISE Pierre-Auguste Renoir did not stint on his praise for the Maison Fournaise which he described as the prettiest spot near Paris. This outdoor café drew crowds who came to dance or flirt, but also painters eager for ideas. The restaurant recreates the setting of the time and notably the famous terrace on the Seine, the natural décor for Renoir s Luncheon of the Boating Party. Traditional French cuisine is served. You continue your visit with the museum which, with its etchings, photographs and collection of rowing, sail and steam boats, evokes the boating era and the joyful mood touched with insouciance that reigned at the time of the Impressionists. Maison Fournaise 3 rue du bac, Chatou Tel: + 33 (0) Restaurant open every day. Musée Fournaise, open from Wednesday to Sunday. David Blondin / CRT PIdF IMPRESSIONIST TRAIL, FOUR TOURIST TRAILS FROM CHATOU TO BOUGIVAL OT Pays des Impressionnistes Explore the countryside painted by Renoir, Sisley, Monet and Pissarro with the help of 30 information panels erected at the very spot where the painters set up their easels. A detailed map will help you follow these itineraries, indicating the remarkable sites and places of interest along the way. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SISLEY TRAIL Born of British parents, Alfred Sisley took his first steps in painting in Paris, with a group of young artists that included Renoir, Monet and Pissarro. He settled in the Moret-sur- Loing region in about 1880 and spent the last 20 years of his life there, immortalising the little medieval town, the charm of which still remains intact. There are five trails to go on to admire the landscapes painted by Sisley in and around Moret. Some 30 years after notable visits from Corot, Pissarro and Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise in the spring of 1890, on his return from the South of France where he had been interned in a mental asylum. Dr Gachet s presence in the town was an insurance policy. He spent the last 70 days of his life here, during which he was extraordinarily productive; he completed more than 80 works including the famous Church at Auvers. He died in tragic circumstances, shrouded in mystery and now rests next to his brother Theo in the town s cemetery. Today, Auvers-sur- Oise is a veritable open-air museum which has retained its bucolic and picturesque character. From April 4th until September 20th, 2015, cultural figures will celebrate the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh s stay in Auvers-sur-Oise through a season of cultural programmes dedicated to him. 17

FIRST IMPRESSIONS GIVERNY, THE HEART OF NORMAN IMPRESSIO- NISM In 1883, Claude Monet who still lived in Vétheuil, got on the Vernon to Gasny train. As he looked out of the window he discovered this little paradise that is Giverny and fell in love, certain, he said never to find such a beautiful spot again. He rented, and then in 1890 bought the famous, pink-plastered house before devoting himself to creating his garden and his pond that he filled with water lilies and which he could admire from its Japanese bridge. Monet lived 43 years in Giverny ( ). There he experienced joy and sorrow, illness, the death of family members, his friendship with Georges Clemenceau and, above all, great success with his Water Lilies. 14 ROUEN / SEINE VALLEY: IMPRESSIO- NIST COUNTRY ROUEN Camille Pissarro, Pont Boieldieu à Rouen, temps brumeux, 1896 (detail) musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen Claude Monet moved to Rouen in By climbing the steep slopes of Sainte-Catherine hill, he discovered the town s - and especially its cathedral s - landscape potential. So Monet decided to rent a little room opposite the cathedral, on the spot where the Tourism Office now stands. The view was perfect for the fanatical pace of work Monet set himself. He worked 11 hours a day, sometimes working on nine different paintings at once. He was obsessed by the building which disturbed his sleep. My sleep was filled with nightmares: the cathedral fell down on top of me, it appeared either blue, pink or yellow. Rouen Cathedral, glorified by the father of Impressionism, is without doubt the best known series of paintings in the entire world. 27 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

FIRST IMPRESSIONS THE IMPRESSIVE NORMANDY COAST DIEPPE, HONFLEUR, LE HAVRE Eugène Boudin, Dame en blanc sur la plage de Trouville, 1869 (detail) Le Havre, MuMa, musée d Art moderne André Malraux - Photo: Florian Kleinefenn The Seine is not the only favourite subject of Impressionists. Thanks to the railway they were able to set up their easels on the Normandy coast. Eugène Boudin advised the young Monet to get outside and paint the landscape because, according to him: The sea and the sky are so beautiful. Monet often returned to the Normandy coast either alone or in the company of Frédéric Bazille, in winter and summer. Thus Monet captured the beauty of Étretat, Fécamp, Trouville Pourville and Sainte-Adresse. Eugène Boudin covered Trouville with his talent. Camille Pissarro would paint 16 views of Dieppe s outer harbour. Berthe Morisot, one of the few women in the Impressionist movement, practised her art at Cherbourg and Fécamp and in 1865 gave us the magnificent Thatched Cottage in Normandy. 31
PLACES TO EXPERIENCE Musée E.Boudin READING TABLES AT DIEPPE, FÉCAMP, ÉTRETAT With its changeable light, capricious weather and the richness of the natural and industrial landscape, the Normandy coast had everything Impressionist painters seeking inspiration could wish for. There are 5 Impressionist trails, 11 sights and 22 reading tables between Dieppe, Fécamp, Étretat, Le Havre and Rouen. Impressions of Seine Maritime brochure available at the Normandie- Giverny Tourisme Office and can be download from the CDT Seine-Maritime website Seine-Maritime Tourisme CHÂTEAU-MUSÉE DE DIEPPE A real memoire to the history of the town of Dieppe, this château-museum is also home to some Impressionist works by Boudin, Pissarro, Renoir and also Eva Gonzales. Eva Gonzales, a friend and model of Manet much to the displeasure of Berthe Morisot who was slightly jealous of their relationship, came to Dieppe in 1870 to paint the beach from the château. Gonzales is one of a trio of female Impressionist artists of the period, along with Morisot and Mary Cassatt. Château-Musée, rue de Chastes, Dieppe Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day (except Tuesdays from October to May) except May 1st and November 1st. Here a breath of culture is combined with a breath of fresh air. Musée Malraux, 2 boulevard Clemenceau, Le Havre Tel: + 33 (0) Open every day except Tuesdays, May 1st and July 14th. Florian Kleinefenn MUSÉE EUGÈNE BOUDIN A trip to Honfleur is not complete without a visit to the museum that pays homage to Eugène Boudin, nicknamed King of the Skies by Camille Corot. You can begin your preparations for a dip in the sea by contemplating the celebrated Conversation on the beach at Trouville, but also the artist s numerous pastels. You can also appreciate the different visions artists have of the same landscape by comparing two views of the Sainte-Catherine bell tower painted by Boudin and Jongkind, and Gustave Courbet s representation of Trouville and Monet s cliffs of Étretat.
