4 Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling ( Counseling Certificate ) The majority (76%) of our students pursue the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate. The 14-course curriculum is designed specifically for those seeking to become certified addictions counselors. Coursework focuses on counseling skills, emphasizing theory with application. Practical training is gained through fieldwork experience. For a list of courses see page 5. The UCLA Extension Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate meets the educational requirements for those seeking professional certification from the California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and its certification board, the California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CAADAC/CCBADC). Note: This certificate satisfies educational requirements to qualify for certification examinations. As requirements change it is the student s responsibility to remain current with their association s certification requirements. Take Courses at Your Own Pace Begin in fall quarter and you can complete the Counseling Certificate in as little as 1 year just take all courses sequentially as scheduled. Or, go at a slower pace with the 2 year Option begin in fall quarter and take a full course and a weekend course each quarter to complete your certificate in 8 quarters. Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies ( Studies Certificate ) This shorter option is designed for professionals already working in mental health, health care, social service, and education, and is a viable option for individuals interested in the field who do not plan to pursue professional certification as a substance abuse counselor. The 8-course curriculum covers social, clinical, and treatment issues of alcohol addiction and other forms of drug abuse (see page 8 for a list of courses). The courses are open to all students who wish to learn about alcohol and drug abuse. Enrollment in the certificate is not required to take these classes. This certificate can be taken in the same 1-2 year time frame as the Counseling Certificate. All courses must be completed within a 3-year period to apply toward the certificate. 4

Fieldwork Practicum II (85 hours of internship experience) Required to complete the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate Both experiential and didactic, this practicum incorporates information learned in prerequisite courses and serves as the capstone experience in the curriculum. Students spend 85 hours in direct agency internship, attend 5 lectures, and participate in 5 seminars that utilize roleplaying and other exercises to troubleshoot counseling issues. Note: An internship agreement must be processed for each facility. Students are encouraged to research facilities of interest to them as early as winter quarter and must secure their internships and complete their paperwork prior to the completion of spring quarter. Fieldwork Practicum III (170 hours of internship experience) Optional practicum for students wishing to apply for professional certification through CAADAC/CCBADC. (This course is not required to complete the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate.) For students who have completed all prerequisite coursework in the UCLA Extension Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate and wish to become certified through CAADAC/CCBADC, this practicum fulfills the additional 170 hours needed to complete the 255-hour CAADAC internship requirement. Fieldwork Practicum III internship hours include activities that develop professional skills and implement the 12 core functions. In addition, interns gain experience in client screening, client intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, report and record keeping, as well as consultation with other professionals regarding client treatment/services (see caadac.org for details). The practicum portion of the coursework was a wonderful hands-on experience. I was hired per-diem at the end of my internship to supplement their therapy when addiction is involved. 6

10 Frequently Asked Questions Do I have to pay for the entire certificate program before classes begin? Enrollment fees are paid on a quarter by quarter basis. The costs, listed on page 7, reflect the total estimated tuition for the program and do not include the optional Fieldwork Practicum III course, books, parking, meals, or other incidental expenses. Where are classes held? Classes are held on the UCLA campus or in facilities in Westwood Village, just south of the UCLA campus. When should I enroll? Enroll as soon as possible after the publication of the current quarter s catalog (online or print). Because of high demand, many courses close early in the enrollment process and become waitlisted. Once full, enrollment in each class will be granted to waitlisted students only when a space is vacated. You will not be charged to be added to the waitlist. How long does it take to complete the program? The certificate can be completed in as little as one year, but students are allotted up to 3 years to complete the program requirements. What is an educational certificate? Certificates provide focused education and training to prepare professionals to pursue a specific area of interest. While considered post-baccalaureate professional training, certificates are designed in content, focus, and presentation style to degree programs, with an added benefit of practical training. Students choose certificate programs to better prepare themselves to work in fast-changing fields, boost their careers, or simply master a subject area in a comprehensive, well-articulated way. UCLA Extension certificates are administered in accordance with the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Successful completion leads to the award of a Gold Seal certificate from UCLA Extension. What is Professional Certification? In the competitive marketplace, employers require proof of Professional Certification as a requirement of employment to distinguish the truly qualified and competent professional. UCLA Extension s certificates provide the knowledge and skills addictions counselors need to excel in the field and to pass Professional Certification Exams resulting in Professional Certification. Addiction counselor certificates are usually earned from a professional association such as the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC), the California Association of Addiction Recovery Resources (CAARR), and the Breining Institute. Professional certifications need to be renewed periodically proving evidence of continuing education. They identify individuals who have demonstrated proficiency in addictions counseling. 10
