1 YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR S/Biz Kidz WORKSHOP COURSE OUTLINES CREATING AND INVENTING A PRODUCT Goal: Generate ideas for developing a product Agenda: i. Introductions: a. 4-H Leader & ASM Representative b. Kids & Family introduce themselves. If time permits, have people pair up and interview each other, then introduce the person they interviewed. ii. Paperwork/housekeeping items a. 4-H paperwork b. Worksheets hand out full packet of worksheets & explain grant program/deadline of Mid-September iii. Speakers: Local farmer or other agriculture rep, Market vendor and a 4-H or other crafty person. iv. Q & A/Closing NOTES: Emphasize that experimentation is part of the process and that some first attempts may fail creating a product is a process and will evolve as you learn. It s OK to change products. Supplies needed: Worksheets UpCycling notes & suggested websites 4-H Paperwork Biz Kidz Application forms Optional to have the kids make name-tags:

2 SALESMANSHIP HOW TO SELL Goal: To teach biz kidz how to sell their product and the importance of how they dress and behave will affect their sales i. Introductions (have everyone introduce themselves & briefly state what they are making) ii. Housekeeping Items iii. Speaker bring in a current market vendor to share iv. Prop Box! Kids do an fun exercise where they are given a random item from our prop box they then must create a commercial or pitch that sells the prop as a product. Kids are then asked to create a commercial for their own product (if someone hasn t decided yet what they are doing, they can pair up with someone who does) v. Q & A/closing

3 DESIGNING YOUR DISPLAY AND BRANDING YOUR PRODUCT Goal: To illustrate the many creative ways to develop a table-top display and how branding your product and display helps with sales. i. Introductions (have everyone introduce themselves and briefly state and/or show their product) ii. Housekeeping Items iii. Vendor Displays: 4 to 5 vendors from ASM set up table-top displays this may include one or two returning students to showcase their displays iv. Q & A/closing

4 THE DOLLARS & SENSE OF IT ALL Goal of Workshop: Teach kids the basics about pricing a product, tracking expenses/income, and making change (counting back to the customer) I. Course Introduction 10 minutes a) Round-table introductions b) 4-H forms c) Overview of workshop 10 minutes - Making Your Bank, Watching it Grow - Tracking Expenses and Income (ledger) Local Banker - How to Price an item - Counting Back Change II. Cost of Sales a) Shopping for product (juice packets, water, sugar, cups, straws) b) Determine what each cup of juice costs c) Set a price 30 minutes III. Making Change 30 minutes a) Teach how to count back change b) Purchasing from a teller (each participant makes a purchase) c) Selling making change back to the customer (each participant sells a product) IV. The Bank a) Making Your Bank (hands-on decorating) 20 minutes b) Starter Funds & ledger (Local Bank) V. Closing 5 minutes a) Kids who complete entire evening get to keep their bank b) Review upcoming vendor meeting meeting other market vendors & talking about their own ideas advice for creating a successful product

5 THE DOLLARS & SENSE OF IT ALL Process: Two booths will be set up lemonade and a juice stand (so we can divide kids into two groups if 10 or more participate) Wholesale Table set-up: Local bank employees will sell goods to the kids (juice packets, water, cups, straws, lids) and track their bill of sales and give them an itemized receipt. Kids will then take their product and receipt and figure (in teams if large group) how much one cup of juice will cost (it may be different for each kid depending on how many cups they buy) We ll share their results with the group and then ask what they think they should charge for a cup of lemonade or juice. Making Change: Kids (in teams) will buy juice & cookies from the stands using bank staff as sellers. Bank staff will make change and count back their change so kids can see how it is done. Tables are flipped and kids (in teams) then become the sellers and make change with a bank staff nearby to assist with tips and advice. Kids then get to keep their change as their starter bank. Tip Jars: Kids can work on these as part of the workshop or can take home to decorate and bring to the next workshop. What You Need: Glass jars (with or without lids) Tip Jars Decorating supplies (already on hand) Tip Jars Other Workshop Supplies: Juice/lemonade supplies (packets, sugar, cups, lids, straws) Market to provide Budget worksheets Change (a $5 packet of one dollar bill and the rest in quarters, dimes, nickels & pennies per kid plan for 30) (Local bank will provide) Two banks for each juice stand (so we can give back change ) 2 tent set-ups (Market to provide)

Sign-up Sheet for when you will be selling at the Market (pass around) iv. Review Market Rules and Expectation sheet v. Review Biz Kidz vendor etiquette (have returning students give examples of what worked and what didn t) vi. Tent Set-up: Demonstrate how the tents are set-up, weights attached, banners attached, and how to tear-down vii. Talk about time to arrive, where to park, etc. at the market viii. Q & A
