Risk Assessment rating criteria: Likelihood Outcome 1 Extremely Rare 1 Minor Irritation easily dealt with by the group 2 Unlikely 2 Moderate Could affect group itinerary 3 Possible 3 Serious Involves external agency General Concerns: Losing a student Issue Likelihood Outcome Strategy 2 (Especially, wandering off in Kota Kinabalu or at airport.) 3 Divide students into groups and designate a teacher to be responsible for a group or set up a roll call system and allocate a meeting location and time for teachers/students to check in. Brief students on potential dangers of becoming separated. Instigate a buddy system whereby students are partnered and look out for each other even when in groups. Have regular stops and headcounts/meeting locations at set intervals/time. Require headcounts at key times prior to boarding a bus, prior to undertaking an activity, etc. Group T- shirts in a bright colour are useful for identifying group members in crowded areas (like airports) Bright hats are another good means to spot students in a crowd. All students should be briefed about what to do in the event of becoming separated. If students are allowed to bring their mobile phones they can use them to re- establish contact with teachers & staff. If a student goes missing the police should be informed at the earliest opportunity. Teachers should maintain record of student s mobile phone numbers if mobiles sare allowed on the trip.

Losing Passports Losing Spending Money Teachers to retain passports at all times (except when transiting Immigration) Passport photocopies to be retained in a separate file by teachers Passports to be locked in hotel safes at all other times (if possible). Teachers to retain school spending money at all times Smaller denomination bills to be used (reduces the need to carry large amounts of money to be exchanged) Students discouraged from bringing credit cards Teachers & ITWNE guides to have a contingency fund to supplement students in case of emergencies Students only to be issued with sufficient spending money as needed per day Spending money to be locked in hotel safe at all other times Accommodation 1/2/3 1/2/3 Accommodations confirmed at Sepilok Forest Edge Lodge and Dreamtel in Kota Kinabalu are based on twin occupancy for students and single rooms for teachers. Myne Resort, Kinabalu Nat. Park Hostel & Hill Lodge as well as Laban Rata Guest House (during the Kinabalu climb) will provide dorm style rooms for students and private rooms for teachers. Staff to ensure group is briefed at each accommodation on fire escapes & exits; security at night/day; moving in and around accommodation; location of staff in event of emergency. Any broken items in rooms are to be reported as soon as possible (even when moving into room) to avoid being charged for damage done by other guests Hotel Protocol 1 1 Students to be briefed about hotel safety protocol prior to departure and to be respectful of other guests. Students to be advised to never open room door unless they can identify the person calling by voice or seeing via the peephole. Students to be advised to never respond to hotel staff claiming to be room service or maintenance. In this event they should call a teacher or ITWNE guide on the phone and ask them to come to their

room to verify the hotel staff. All teachers and ITWNE guides to have lists of rooms allocated to students. All students to make note of teacher s and ITWNE guide s rooms. Pedestrian Road Safety 1 2 Group only crosses roads together Group to use designated crossing points where possible Group walks in a line with a teacher or ITWNE guide at the front and rear. Group leaders wait at crossing points until everyone crosses safely. Free Time 1 1/2 This will normally take place at our hotels, but souvenier shopping in Kota Kinabalu is possible if teachers approve. In such case, teachers and ITWNE staff will set a clear meeting point and a clear meeting time where students gather and headcounts are conducted. Ensure students remain in groups when shopping. Students must notify a teacher or ITWNE guide whenever they go out of the group even for toilet use. Weather & Elevation Hazards 3 1/2/3 Sunscreen is always advisable even on cloudy days when hiking, swimming and boating. A hat is also advisable as are sunglasses. Teacher s to brief students about the hazards of sun exposure. Teacher s to brief students about the need for regular hydration and 1- litre water bottles of drinking water are to be carried by students at all times. In event of a sudden severe storm while boating or hiking, the activity must cease and guides will lead students to the safest possible shelter. Climbing Mount Kinabalu poses some very real safety challenges. Teachers and staff must be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and monitor students carefully throughout the ascent. The final ascent to the summit of Mount Kinabalu will take place in the dark. Students must have good torches (flashlights) with fully charged batteries. Teachers and staff must ensure students are

properly dressed for cold, windy and often wet weather and that hiking shoes are broken in. Teachers and guides must check that all students remain well hydrated with drinking water during the climb and carry energy bars for pick ups. Environment 1/2/3 1/2/3 Group adventure activities will be take place in wild and relatively remote locations requiring safety considerations. All students will be informed how to proceed to safety in the event of an extreme weather event. Clothing and safety gear must be appropriate to the activities the students will engage in, from hiking to kayaking and students must pack everything on their What To Bring list. Flashlights are essential! All students must be made aware of the potential hazards of visiting an environment they are not familiar with and what to do should they encounter a dangerous animal such as a venomous snake. It is important that teachers and ITWNE staff stress the hazards associated with all outdoor activities and insist students adhere to safety regulations. Transport (Vehicles & Boats) Charter person mini vans for road transport & long tail boats for lake travel. A registered sea going vessel will be used for the Andaman Sea island hopping day. 1/2 2/3 Charter, fully insured and inspected mini vans will be used for all road travel while Myne Resorts outboard boats will be used for excursions on the Kinabatagan River. A registered sea going vessel will be chartered for the Coral Islands trip. Teachers and ITWNE staff are responsible to see that everyone uses their seat belt in the vehicle and life jackets on the boats. In the event of a road accident students must be moved to safety away from the scene (dependent upon severity and location). The second mini van can assist, but students in that van must also be moved to a safe location well off the highway. ITWNE guides will contact local authorities and emergency services, if necessary. Teachers will also be involved in decision making following a transport accident. Guides must monitor vehicle/vessel speed and safety as well as the mini van drivers and boatmans performance. Staff must intervene if they see unsafe procedures. ITWNE guides must ensure that boats are in good

condition, have bailers, paddles/oars and life jackets for every person on board. Transport (Airplanes) 1/2 1/2/3 Safety briefings by flight attendants before each departure will inform students what to do in the unlikely event of an accident. Communication 2 2/3 Teachers and staff are encouraged to have mobile phones for emergency use. ISB teachers and ITWNE staff must ensure they have each others mobile numbers on their phones for quick calls if necessary and that emergency services numbers are correct. Students must be encouraged to communicate to staff at any point during the trip if they are not well, in need of a toilet stop or are unsure of taking part in any activity. Personal Equipment 3 1 Teachers should ensure all students have packed correct personal gear and equipment before departure from Bangkok. There may not be time, or shopping facilities during the trip, to purchase forgotten items. Attitude and Behavior 3 1 Personality problems can upset the dynamic of the group, so a briefing from ITWNE staff on arrival, and from teachers prior to and during the trip, will help set the proper tone for communication and resolving differences. Fun team building activities during the trip will create a strong bond between the students and staff. Local Population 2 2 ISB students will be taught by ITWNE staff how to best observe and respect Muslim traditions in Sabah. General Health 3 1/2/3 ISB to compile details for each student, listing any health problems, recent injuries/ surgeries and medications being taken. Parental consent forms are to be completed and signed. These should include details of the student s blood group and parental permission for blood

transfusions. In the event of parental refusal for medical treatment or blood transfusions for religious or other reasons, it is the schools decision about whether a child participates or not. The ITWNE trip leader is certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Lifesaving. ISB will also be sending a highly qualified First Aid attendant on this trip. First Aiders will only offer first aid if they are given permission by the injured student to assist, or if a teacher is not present to assist an unconscious student. All staff must be made aware of students with identified medical issues (asthma, epilepsy, allergies, etc.) and should be aware of action to be taken in the event of an attack or seizure. Local clinics and hospital will vary in their standards and what they can do ITWNE staff and Borneo Eco- Tours will have all necessary contact numbers for the nearest medical center. For serious conditions, a patient may be evacuated by air ambulance to world- class hospitals in Singapore. Minor Injuries 1 3 ITWNE staff will carry a basic First Aid kit at all times. ISB will also provide a comprehensive First Aid kit and ensure it is fully stocked and close at hand. In event of medical emergency, ISB teachers will have access to Borneo Eco Tours staff fluent in Malay language and English. Minor cuts and abrasions to be cleaned and treated on site where the risk of infection is low. Insect repellent is highly recommended as is medication to relieve pain and itching from insect bites. Dog bites can be a serious issue so students need to be informed to not approach, try to pet or provoke a strange dog. ITWNE staff should be made aware of students with identified medical issues (asthma, epilepsy, allergies, etc.) and should be aware of action to be taken in the event of an attack or seizure. Hospitalization 1 2/3 ITWNE advises schools to compile a file listing all

medical issues of the children, any allergies, medications being taken and other relevant information. This can be useful if hospitalization is required ITWNE guides to inform teachers of nearest hospital / clinic and the fastest and best mode of tansport to move a patient. Borneo Eco Tours staff to provide translation services when necessary for a teacher remaining with a hospitalized student. ISB to compile contact list of telephone numbers, mobiles, office numbers, pagers, etc for parents / guardians of each child. ISB to have designated Line Manager who will be point of contact in the event of serious injury or hospitalization. General Hygiene 2 2/3 Purified drinking water, free of charge, will be avaiulable at all times for students to refill their water bottles. ITWNE always chooses hotels and restaurants that maintain good hygiene. Everyone will be encouraged to wash their hands before meals and to shower daily. Wet wipes and hand sanitizers will be available to students in case toilet facilities are not up to best standards while traveling. Activities Hiking 1/3 2/3 ITWNE staff follow strict protocols on all hiking trips: No student is allowed to get ahead of the hike leader who knows the trail and is watching out for snakes and other hazards. Similarly, no student is allowed to fall behind the last guide in the line up. This last person carries the group first aid kit so he or she is always moving towards (not away from) an injured party. This person must also have the higest level of first aid training. All students must wear closed- toe shoes during the hike for better ankle support and to protect from stubbed toes and snake bites. Each student must also carry adequate drinking water to prevent dehydration.

Swimming & Snorkeling 1/3 1/2 Because crocodiles are present, there is to be no swimming or approaching the river banks on foot during our stay on the Kinabatagan River. An ITWNE trained lifeguard must be on duty any time ISB students are in the water, either swimming or snorkeling. Students must abide by this regulation and only swim during designated times. When snorkeling in deep water, all ISB students must wear lifejackets to prevent panic should they find themselves moved by currents away from the boat. Service Projects: tree planting injury 1/3 1/2 All ISB students must wear gloves when digging holes to plant trees in the Kinabatagan River corridor. Poisonous plants, or those causing irritation, must be shown to all students so they can avoid them before and during the tree planting project. Students must apply sunscreen and bring sufficient water to the planting site, and ITWNE staff and teachers must carry a well supplied first aid kit to the site.

All persons have a duty to do all they can to avoid harm to themselves or others.

All persons have a duty to do all they can to avoid harm to themselves or others. This risk assessment is designed to highlight some of the potential hazards involved in a trip to Morocco, how Discover Ltd has attempted to reduce these risks and how individuals can reduce the risk to
