1 Welcome Animators! You are about to spend a week at Spread the Weird Animation Studio working with others to produce a short animation while learning the fundamentals of design, sound engineering and techniques of animation. Did you know that animation has something for everyone?! We will start with a written story, use voices to make characters come alive, compose theme music and sound effects using microphones. We ll be drawing and sculpting clay characters, illustrating background scenes, using stop-motion and computers to mix everything into one animation. A cool, celebrity artist will visit us for a drawing session and we ll take a field trip to the Phoenix Library to get a tour and visit the Maker Space that you will enjoy. 2 ANIMATION Highlighted Events Your Animation will be shared with TED-Ed Lessons Worth Sharing TED-Ed's videos aim to capture and amplify the voices of the world's greatest educators. To achieve this, they pair extraordinary educators with talented animators to produce exceptional educational videos. The animation project that we produce will be submitted to the TED-Ed library of lessons worth sharing! Celebrity Guest Artist: Vincent Deporter Nickelodeon / DC Comics Vincent Deporter is an international Belgian artist who works in both comics and animation. Deporter got his start in comics working as an assistant to Jean Graton, before selling his own strips. In 1996, after relocating to New York, he has worked on DC's line of comic books adapted from popular animated cartoons, like Scooby Doo and Ed, Edd n Eddy, and has also inked many of the Batman, and Superman style-guides. He continues to work for Nickelodeon, notably on SpongeBob SquarePants. Since Nickelodeon Magazine has closed its pages, he now writes and draws for the SpongeBob SquarePants Comics, as a regular contributor. Field Trip to the Phoenix Public Library Burton Barr s MACH1 Labs The Phoenix Public Library is a Maker Space and Burton Barr features MACH1 Labs providing hands-on STEM Education to all Ages. We ll get a tour of the amazing architecture that went into constructing the library and a close peek at what happens at MACH1 Labs. Minecraft Monday, Science Cafes, Hacker Haven, 3D Thursday, Cyborg Factory and Space Academy are just a few of the fun things to do in the library s Maker Space!

3 ANIMATION What to Bring with You It would be great if you would like to bring some of your personal pieces of artwork, writing, and music to share. If you have a personal laptop bring that too! This way you can go home with all of the software that we will use in class. You are welcome to bring any of your own art supplies (sketch books, pencils, pens etc). Some people just like to use their own art tools but all of these items will be available in the studio including individual computer stations. This is a bundle of supplies that I will have for you!
