OPEN LECTURE Inspired by TED talks SDC launched the Open Lecture which invites key speakers from around the world who conduct open lectures at one of the SDC campuses. Studying fashion design not only equips students with the knowledge and skills required to design and manufacture clothing, but also trains students in the various fields associated with the fashion industry. Career possibilities become endless once the student has completed the certificate, degree or diploma course in Fashion Design. Interior Design Taught here: BA Degree Diploma Certificate Interior Design ranges from the shell components of a space such as walls, floors, ceilings and services (lighting, air-conditioning, etc) to the finer details of finishes, fabrics and furniture. Taught here: e e J J D D M M Fashion Stylist & Photography BA Degree Fashion stylists are responsible for bringing to life a photographer or director s vision for a fashion photo shoot, layout, commercial, print advertisement, music video, etc. Fashion stylists often scout locations, create the mood for the shoot by selecting and setting up the appropriate props, fashions, accessories, and even models to fit the theme of the shoot. Publishers, television and film production houses, public relation firms, advertising agencies, and music production companies often employ fashion stylists. Stylists may also be employed by agents, celebrities, or wealthy clients as wardrobe consultants to help them prepare for major events or appearances. M Accessory Design BA Degree Diploma SDC offers students state of the art facilities that enable them to conceptualise and design worn and carried accessories which include: handbags, belts, footwear, jewellery, eyewear and hats. Students of this program are trained as fashion designers but with specialisation in accessory design, focusing on trends, fashion marketing, product design and manufacturing technology. M

12 Illumination design Certificate This specialisation program equips students with the digital design and planning skills for creative illumination of domestic, commercial and luxury yacht design. Ideal for architects, interior designers and interior decorators. Industrial Design BA Degree Diploma Industrial design is the use of design and applied science to improve the aesthetics and function of a product and to ensure its marketability. The SDC Industrial design department equips students to create and execute design solutions that address form, ergonomics, usability, marketability, brand development and sales. M Garden Design Certificate Using the principles of design and horticulture this specialisation program trains students in the art and process of conceptualising, designing and creating a beautiful garden landscape. Ideal for architects and interior designers. Landscape Design BA Degree Diploma Landscape architects design outdoor and public spaces to achieve environmental, social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes. This program equips students to analyze existing social, ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and then conceptualize and design solutions for each environment. Landscape Design is a multi-disciplinary field, incorporating aspects of horticulture, botany, design and architecture, industrial design, geology, environmental psychology, geography, and ecology. Sustainable design Certificate This specialisation program equips students with design skills that allow creative conceptualisation of products intended not to seriously impact the environment either when they are being created or when they are being used. These products or designs are also often created to allow the users to feel more connected or to relate more closely to the natural environment. Design Foundation Certificate The purpose of this programme is to offer a generic foundation in design for students who have not taken Visual Arts (or EGD) at Grade 12 Level. The program exposes students to the different fields of design as well as giving learners the opportunity to develop basic skills necessary for design-based study. On successful completion of the program the student is able to apply for advanced study programs with SDC.

13 SHORT COURSE P R O G R A M Advanced sketch up This program is suitable for those that have completed the basic How to course of Sketch-up and are interested in learning additional functions and features to enhance their CAD skills. Sketch-up is a 3D computer modelling program marketed by Google. It is ideal for Interior designers and architects but also used by film makers, game developers and mechanical engineers. The software is renowned for its ease and is therefore used by many professional designers. Bridal Gown design This lucrative niche market within the fashion industry continues to grow. This program uses the students existing fashion design and sewing skills and trains the student how to become a bridal gown designer. Students learn from practising designers on what it takes to make this such a rewarding career. Taught here: e J D Makeup artistry The interesting career of makeup artistry can usually be found in association with the entertainment industry. Makeup artists apply cosmetics for theatre, film, television, fashion industries and private celebrity clients. Makeup artists are truly artists that use creative planning and skills to create a look according to a brief or theme. M CAD for Interior Designers This course is aimed at the interior designer, however people wishing to do drafting or architecture can also benefit from it as an introduction to AutoCAD application. With the additional element of Basic Photoshop to render elevations & create mood boards, this course offers a solid foundation to the novice interior designer or a person wishing to become more efficient with this software. AutoCAD is used for drawing up plans, elevations & other technical drawings needed for the construction of interiors, buildings, structures, furniture or any other application that would need a professional technical drawing. M Fashion Illustration Students learn the art of fashion illustration from practising fashion designers and illustrators from Milan who have developed this program. Fashion illustrators translate fashion ideas into images. This program develops the stylised design technique used by fashion designers who work in the fashion media and within fashion houses as well as the fashion advertising field.
