6 PROGRAMMES CERTIFICATE IN MEDIA ARTS VISUAL ARTS (LEVEL 4) BM0002 Duration: Starts February or July for one semester Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Hamilton City Campus Dates: Priority given to applications received by October 31st / May 31st. Late applications considered until the end of January, or when programme is full This introductory programme delivers the basic knowledge and skills you ll need to start your career in Media and Visual Arts. You ll learn study techniques and specialist Visual Arts skills to take you to the next level. WHAT YOU LL STUDY Core Modules: Study Skills Written Communication Interpersonal Communication Skills Media Portfolio Choose four of the following six electives, with approval from the programme coordinator: Graphic Design Moving Image Painting / Sculpture Photography Fashion Design Spatial Studies WORK EXPERIENCE AND CONNECTIONS Wintec tutors are currently researching their specialist fields and are up to date with what you need to know for future employment. NO BETTER PLACE TO STUDY You ll study in open-plan classrooms, industry-standard Mac computer labs, studios, editing suites and communal project areas. With access to a variety of facilities, you ll be able to work with arts students from every discipline. ENTRY CRITERIA You ll need 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in both English and Practical Art, Design or Photography (or equivalent). Early applications are accepted up to 31 October; applications close 31 January, or when the course is full. Your application should include: A completed Application to Enrol form; A letter of application describing relevant work and life experience, and your commitment to your field of study; and Up to 6 photographs 15cm x 10cm (approximately) of samples of your art or design work. LEARNING BY DOING You ll use the latest industry technologies to create a series of paintings, photographs, a short film, a typeface and a poster design. Your best work will go into a media portfolio, which can be used for application into the Bachelor programme. You ll have the opportunity to specialise in any of these visual art pathways: Painting Sculpture Graphic Design Digital Media Design Photography Moving Image For more information on majors please see pages COLLABORATE FOR YOUR FUTURE For various projects you will work collaboratively with other Media Arts students from communication and commercial music. The opportunity that a practical working environment gives you to open your mind to other disciplines can be exhilarating. DESIGN YOUR FUTURE Your study path will give you expertise in a specialist field, and the programme also provides the opportunity to extend into additional related fields. You can create an individual mix of study that suits your career goals by the elective options you choose. If you re looking for flexibility, individual and team-based projects encourage a range of learning styles. Some modules are offered in the evening, and you ll have 24 hour access to the Media Arts facilities. If you choose, you can also study part time. LEARNING ON THE JOB During an internship you ll have the opportunity to experience and make connections with work places, either in New Zealand or overseas. This module involves approximately 120 hours of realtime work in an area of your choice. The professional research project will allow you to develop a real project in collaboration with an industry expert. In addition, Wintec works closely with industry professionals to provide you with opportunities to work on projects in the local and wider design industry. These modules will prepare you for a career in your chosen field, and also help you make connections for real job opportunities in the workplace. SPARK During SPARK, our annual week-long festival of media, arts and design, a range of world class professionals in art, design, music, writing and more gather to engage and inspire students. You ll gain valuable insights into the professional world and how it works. ENTRY CRITERIA For entry to this degree programme you ll need: 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 in four subjects, including 12 credits in a language-rich subject; or 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 including a language-rich subject; or University Entrance or equivalent. When submitting your application you should include: A letter of application describing your relevant work and life experience, and commitment to your field of study A character reference from someone who knows you well A passport-sized personal photograph (for identification at your interview.) A portfolio that shows you are capable of developing a cohesive body of work, and of investigating and developing your ideas. You may submit projects digitally or provide a URL to work hosted on a website. (You should still submit printed A4 sheets which show process drawings or other developmental evidence of this work.) 9 GRAPHIC DESIGN You ll learn practical skills working on a Mac computer with industry-standard software. You ll design and create publications, packaging, logos, illustrations and other print-based projects. In your third year you will have an opportunity to work in the industry, develop your best project for your portfolio and display this portfolio at the end of year exhibition. As a Media Arts student you ll collaborate with other areas such as photography, moving image, sound and printmaking, sharing equipment and expertise. DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN Your study will be based on web design, interactive, 2D and 3D modelling, animation and other screen based projects. You ll learn to use industry standard practices, techniques and software. In your third year you will have an opportunity to work in the industry and develop your best project for display at the end of year exhibition. You ll learn to use critical thinking to apply these skills to a range of industry and art based projects. As a Media Arts student you ll collaborate with other areas such as graphic and digital design, moving image and printmaking, sharing equipment and expertise. MOVING IMAGE You ll immerse yourself in training with industry-standard digital platforms and software. In your final year you will make or participate in the production of a short drama, music video or documentary, or you ll develop a screenplay. You ll have access to HD cameras, lighting kits, dollies, cranes and other specialist equipment. 11 THE WORLD OF COMMUNICATION We had industry professionals teaching us, so we got to see how stuff worked in the real world. A mix of real-world theory and practice meant we often pitched to real companies and collaborated with other disciplines on projects. Making contacts in other areas and gaining industry experience was invaluable. I use skills from my BMA every day. 14 PROGRAMMES BACHELOR OF MEDIA ARTS COMMUNICATION (LEVEL 7) BM9601 Duration: Start February or July for three years Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent Location: Hamilton City Campus In this programme you will specialise in one of the following: Journalism - see next page Public relations and advertising - see page 16 Moving image - see page 16 WHAT YOU LL STUDY In your first year you will develop writing, media and interpersonal skills common to all three practices. You ll also study two introductory modules that support your chosen path. In year two you can apply to specialise in moving image, or continue with communication and a mix of media-based modules. In this way you will try out a range of options before you commit to your specialist field at the end of the year. You can choose electives from across the programme, in whichever path you decide. These may be of particular interest, or in support of your path. For example, photography electives could enhance a path in advertising, or just follow a personal passion. COLLABORATE FOR YOUR FUTURE You will work on various projects with other media arts students specialising in areas such as digital media design, commercial music, painting, sculpture or photography. It s an exhilarating way to learn, opening you up to blue-sky thinking, multidimensional results and the inspiration of working with other disciplines and talents. Read her story... /ss WRITING AND MORE WRITING Be prepared to write. You ll learn how to write effective news stories, media releases, and project briefs. You ll write for the web, scripts for moving image and advertising campaigns for clients. 15 BACHELOR OF MEDIA ARTS communication pathways JOURNALISM NO BETTER PLACE TO STUDY Your study at Wintec will be practical and relevant to today s working environment. In our on-site functioning newsroom you ll write, edit, photograph, and video stories for our multi-media online newspaper The Waikato Independent. You ll learn industry-specific skills in interviewing, research and news gathering. We ll also teach you shorthand and digital publishing as well as give you the opportunity to extend your skills in media photography and video editing. Along with design and photography students, you ll produce the daily Fieldays Exhibitor magazine, and for three weeks you ll train on the job in one of New Zealand s newsrooms. PARTNERSHIPS IN THE INDUSTRY Wintec s journalism pathway is New Zealand Journalist Training Organisation approved, and designed in close consultation with the industry. Your tutors have a minimum of seven year s professional experience, and you ll be inspired by guest speakers (including judges, politicians and police) to write real life stories. Our strong relationships with editors ensure that all Wintec students are placed in print newsrooms during their internship. EDITOR IN RESIDENCE Every year a highly-regarded industry specialist acts as editor-in-residence, to run our highly regarded Press Club, adding a powerful dimension to the pathway, and providing mentoring to you and your fellow students. 16 BACHELOR OF MEDIA ARTS communication pathways PUBLIC RELATIONS NO BETTER PLACE TO STUDY You ll use industry-standard software and a variety of media platforms print text and design, social networking, web pages, blogging, e-zines with audio and video clips in your work on public relations and advertising projects. You ll develop media management skills and an understanding of the constantly evolving opportunities on the internet. Some of your projects will be for real clients and will involve collaborative work with design and visual arts students. PARTNERSHIPS IN INDUSTRY Your tutors are well connected to current industry leaders and are academic researchers or industry practitioners. You ll learn in small classes with plenty of face-to-face time with tutors and guest speakers. You ll meet professionals from public relations firms, advertising agencies, newspapers and television and be given opportunities to build networks and contacts. Wintec maintains strong relationships with the industry, and through your projects and internship opportunities you ll build a network of useful professional connections. MOVING IMAGE You ll learn practical skills working on location and in the studio on a Mac computer with industry-standard software, including Final Cut Pro Studio, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, LiveType and DVDStudio Pro. In your third year you will have an opportunity to work in the industry, develop your best project for your portfolio and display your work at the end of year exhibition. 17 PROGRAMMES NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM MULTI-MEDIA (LEVEL 5) BM0901 Duration: Starts February for one year Study: Full-time or part-time equivalent, or part time online Location: Hamilton City Campus If you re investigative, intelligent and informed, and you like writing, then this programme is for you. You ll be equipped with the skills for a multi-media career in journalism or communications. You ll work on news gathering and writing for print, broadcast and internet; news photography and videography; court, council, and police reporting, media law and ethics; bi-cultural and multi-cultural perspectives, and shorthand. On some projects, such as our online newspaper The Waikato Independent, you ll work collaboratively, sharing skills and ideas with students across the spectrum of media arts. If you need flexibility, there are two study options: One full-time year at Wintec s Hamilton City Campus; or two years part-time online, from anywhere. WORK IN A REAL NEWSROOM You won t be restricted to text books, but work in the community to source material for writing and publishing stories, both in local media and online with The Waikato Independent. You ll gain work experience in a newsroom, and join with design students to produce the daily Fieldays Exhibitor for the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek.
