One of the main characteristics of the studies in HENALLUX is that theory and practice are very closely linked in order to bring everyone to the highest possible level of qualification corresponding to their degree. 6 For every project for every talent The Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg was born from the merging of two famous institutions: the Haute École de Namur and the Haute École Blaise Pascal. The Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg counts about 5500 students working on eleven campuses, in the provinces of Namur, Liège and Luxembourg. They offer a nearly complete range of training in three years (bachelor), as well as several years of specialization, a Master in Social Management Engineering, a Master in Computer System Architecture and a Master in Industrial Engineering. 4

8 Higher Education: choose well Bachelor and Master studies in higher education (Haute École) Bachelor studies in a Haute École or university both last three years (*). However, they vary quite a lot, fundamentally. Bachelor studies offered at university are called transition : they help to provide access to further years called master. They do not offer direct access to a job. Field practitioners The Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg trains field practitioners. That means the studies we offer are meant for students who are motivated by a precise training and concrete action. It also means that while you are with us, you are not going to waste your time, you will go for the main things: A strict practical training, linked to long-term practice placements (so that you become as efficient as possible in the field) A theoretical training closely linked to your future professional life. Bachelor studies offered in a Haute École, among them the Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg, are called professionalizing : they offer full degrees giving direct access to a professional life. Moreover, the Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg organizes three Masters, all of them handling together theory and practice: the Master in Social Management Engineering, the Master in Computer System Architecture and the Master in Industrial Engineering. Life on the campuses On each campus of the Haute École, a lot of services are at your disposal: libraries, computer and multimedia rooms, cafeterias There are also very regular sport or cultural activities, visits and study trips, lectures A Haute École inside Europe In its constant research of opportunities to offer to its students, the Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg is definitely turned to Europe and the other continents. In the context of the European Lifelong Learning Programme, our students can spend an academic time of study or placement abroad, in one of the many partner-universities. They can also choose the other Communities inside Belgium. A unique opportunity to discover a new way of learning and of approaching other cultures and ways of life. Moreover, there are opportunities for our young graduates to follow a master abroad after their bachelor studies. The credits (ECTS) Higher education in Europe, and typically in Belgium, is based on a system of credits. For every course the credits represent not only the time you spend in a classroom or lecture hall but also the time you spend studying, doing research in a library, doing practical work or placements > ECTS is the acronym of European Credit Transfer System. > One credit is worth 24 hours of work. > One year of studies consists of 60 credits. 7

11 Private and public organizations look for specialists who are able to design heterogeneous and safe computer architectures. Mobile information systems are more and more the visible face of complex computer architectures spread on several platforms (IBM Mainframes, servers working on various exploitation systems, pads, mobile phones, ). The Master in Computer System Architecture (MASI), the only one of its kind in Belgium, is devoted to these evolutions. Access That training is accessible to the bearers of bachelor degrees and masters with a computer science orientation, and, in specific cases, according to special programmes. Training That 120-credit master (2 years) trains specialists in the development and safety of computer networks, in the development of mobile applications, in the management of heterogeneous and spread computer systems. MASI means a master of application linking theoretical concepts to intensive implementation in laboratories and immersion stays in companies. The Mainframe aspect which is being developed in the course is required in the main banking and administrative institutions, among others. That training also aims at making the future graduates sensitive to company management. It encourages them in promising fields that require a high qualification. It also puts them in a perspective of applied research. Up to now, there is no other equivalent graduation training in Belgium. Bachelors in computer sciences have to go abroad to find similar trainings (Scotland, France, Sweden, ). The courses are given in Marche-en-Famenne, in the province of Luxembourg, and take advantage of an expanding socio-economic background which asks for joint collaboration in terms of high-level technology. 9

One third of the employment offered in the field of computers is designed for specialists who should be able to build and supervise integrated and heterogeneous architectures that meet the requirements of recruiting companies and institutions. MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT No assistant means no management Arlon 12 Keywords: office automation, languages, law, taxation, marketing, information processing In a context of constant evolution of companies and institutions, management assistants will see their role as being the direct help of one or more executives. They are the first auxiliaries in the implementation of their administrative and commercial duties as well as in financial, law and communication matters.

15 Training General training: economics and management, law, taxation, marketing, information processing, French, foreign languages Practical training: office automation, language of business, techniques and practice of secretary work, concrete field situations from the start, three months of placement in a company in Belgium or abroad Worth noting: it is possible to obtain extra certifications (e.a. Cambridge First Certificate, Goethe Certificate, Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung, and also the SPACE Eurocertificate). Professional field Management assistants are nowadays coordinators, organizers and specialists in new technologies. They are versatile, organized, rigorous, accessible, endowed with relational skills and capacities of initiative. They are precious collaborators to executives. The official label of the training is management secretary. That is what is read on the diploma delivered after three years of study. However the word secretary is connoted as a female job. Hence the tendency to use the word management assistant to avoid any sexist bias and also broaden the perspectives of that job as much for men as for women. 13

16 Social Workers are professionals of collective action and concrete help of people. They create, restore or develop social links and hence favour the fulfillment of individuals. 17 Training The three years of study include a theoretical and methodological training as well as professional integration activities (placements). Other frequent events are visits to institutions, lectures by experts, research, personal reading and citizenship activities. The first year is rich in basic courses in a variety of fundamental subjects that allow for the discovery of social reality. The second year offers a further development of the theoretical knowledge of the world of social work and of the learning of the job. At the end of the third year, students write by themselves a Final Work based on the experience of the placement and on the methods of observation, research, intervention and assessment acquired during the placement. Professional field The training for Social Worker at HENALLUX is both polyvalent and varied. It opens to several social jobs and many professional sectors: polyvalent social relief, youth welfare, socio-cultural animation, life-long education, socio-professional integration, the sociomedical field, penitentiary system, the psycho-pedagogical field, the integration of elderly or handicapped people, of immigrants, international cooperation, defense of rights, Bridges The degree of Social Worker gives access to several fields. Assembly and production lines are more and more complex, more and more competitive. They require maintenance staff with higher and higher qualifications.

19 AUTOMATION Specialized in assembly and production lines Namur Training The target: in three years, training top qualified technicians thanks to deep technical knowledge (industrial information systems, applied electronics, control loops, fluid mechanics), general training meeting the demands of the professional world (languages, social and business know-how, mathematics applied to technical problems), a fifteen-week placement in a factory and a Final Work in close relation with the industrial world. From basic electricity, electronics, mechanics, fluid study, logics, automation and control exercises in the first year, you will move to the specific fields of automation and regulation in the second year. During the third year, your training will be completed with courses and labs oriented towards the job: microprocessors, industrial electronics, electric control loops Professional field Production technician, maintenance or service technician, research unit technician, instrumentalist, technical-commercial Many sectors of activity are apt to use your skills: automation, mechanics, electromechanics, information systems, electronics, thermal power, medicine, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, the agri-food sector, the tertiary sector (banks, public institutions, ministries). LIBRARY SCIENCES AND DOCUMENTATION Expert in books and specialized in modern technologies Malonne 18 Keywords: librarian, documentalist, new TICs, books, communication, animation, languages, information LIBRARIAN The manager of documentary resources is first of all an expert in books and printed matters. But libraries have changed: TICs, computerized catalogues, sound, picture They are no longer places for storing but rather places for communication. Hence the librarian is now also a cultural animator, z mediator, a trainer

21 DOCUMENTALIST Thanks to TICs and electronic publications, everyone can have access to an incredible amount of information of all sorts. In this respect, the job of a documentalist is fundamental: a specialist in research, broadcasting and storing of information. That is why documentalists are highly qualified in TICs. Training The training lasts 3 years. 23 A performing multi-discipline training. ACCOUNTING (taxation/management) A useful advisor for the company Arlon Namur Accounting requires an efficient multi-disciplinarian training. In our economic world, Bachelors in Accounting are real actors in the top management of a company or an institution. Their role is capital in budgets, financial analysis, investment studies. That is why such a bachelor degree favours versatility, through the mastery of accounting, taxation systems, management, languages, TICs and the various modules of accounting software. Agreement of the Banking Commission Our Bachelors in Accounting can have direct access to the banking sector, without any further qualification. That agreement is a requirement with many employers, and it offers our graduates better assets on the labour market. 21

24 Training At HENALLUX, accounting studies can be followed either in Namur or in Arlon. After the first year, the student can choose between two options: Management option: a key-manager for companies or institutions Those accountants are very qualified in the field of company management. They are the contact people, equally trained in management, staff management, and of course the typical training of the accountant. That is why graduates in accounting / management are mostly employed in SMEs and the non-profit sector. Taxation option: an expert in taxation matters In that option, students explore the taxation system for legal persons as well as the system for companies, VAT and other indirect taxation, while proceeding with their typical training as accountants. Graduates with the taxation option will be found mainly in trustee companies. Fund Services Programme > On the Arlon campus That innovative training, a joint with BNP- Paribas banking, meets a growing demand of the banking sector for specialists in fund management. It offers a high-level certificate and raises the chances for a career in the Grand- Duchy of Luxembourg. The Fund Service Programme is open to any student who has registered in the last year of a Bachelor or master in Economics, for a programme of 250 hours compatible with an academic year. 22

LAW Never alone with the law Namur 24 Keywords: justice, equity, laws, rigor, reasoning, human relations, society, advice, defence As soon as two individuals meet, rules are established or behaviours go along rules already settled before. Hence the prominent role of lawyers, who are people who know the rules dictated by law. Bachelor studies in Law at the Haute École de Namur-Liège- Luxembourg are oriented in a very practical way. Our graduates are general practitioners of the law: they combine versatile legal knowledge with a professional know-how, together with a solid qualification in software.

27 Training The aim is clear: to become high-level professionals, you should first master the rules of law in order to apply them. Every branch of law is thus considered in your training: public law, civil law, business law On top of that, TICs, languages, communication, accounting will also be part of your baggage. The first year mainly aims at acquiring knowledge, the second year allows for their exploration and application to real situations. The third year sees to specialization and direct learning in real-life situations in the professional field (15 weeks of placement + Final Work). Professional field Bachelors in Law are entitled to work in a variety of sectors. 29 ELECTRO-MECHANICS (maintenance) Useful interface Arlon Seraing Bachelors in Electro-Mechanics (maintenance) have acquired the necessary techniques to implement, exploit and maintain electric and mechanical processes, devices and machines. They are first-rank partners in the company thanks to their versatility, their capacity of adaptation and their autonomy. They play a crucial interface role between engineers and field workers. They have been trained to perceive the conceptions, plans and instructions coming from the former to make them accessible to the latter. The other way round, they can analyze the technical and human problems of the workshop to summarize them and propose solutions to the managers involved. Training The objective of the first year is to give each student the necessary bases of the main technical courses. This work is essential, since all students do not come with the same knowledge, mainly because of the variety of the school routes. In the second year, the project approach colours the training with the necessary dimension so as to meet the requirements of the employers. Indeed, Bachelors in Electro-Mechanics are versatile individuals. Their multi-disciplinarian training integrates them easily in the fields of maintenance of industrial processes and of the energy maintenance of mechanics both in environmental and in economic terms. 27

30 The development of technical projects from design help to implementation is the key-asset of the training. The practical approach is prevalent throughout the studies, together with a solid theoretical input. The third year consists of 75% of practical courses (placements, Final Work, meeting professionals, factory visits ). Professional field Young Bachelors in Electro-Mechanics have a critical mind and can work in autonomy, respecting the rules. They use the tools of communication adequately. The use of software is a daily practice for them. It is no longer a secret: human resource management has become a key-element in the management of companies, private or public. It is indeed up to the manager of human resources to have the objectives of the company and the interests of staff meet. Human Resource Management is an active, dynamic and varied job: staff management, their commitment to the project of the company, communication and mediation between staff and managers

33 Training The theoretical training is carried out in collaboration with specialists who share their professional experience in various fields: techniques of applied social research, techniques of information and communication, techniques of negotiation and conflict management, recruitment methods, methods of job descriptions, methods of assessment, methods of skill development The practical training is carried out in seminars of professional integration and placements in various work contexts. The time devoted to practice increases from one year to the other, to an amount of 500 hours in the third year, at the end of which students write and defend a Final Work which is linked to the placement experience.
