WP2: Product Adaptations The purpose of this work package is to give the data producers the opportunity to adapt their existing and operational products to the scientific and technical recommendations that result from work package 1. data producers may need to create ISO/OGC compliant metadata for consistency. - New metadata formats - New NETCDF file structure/format - New naming conventions - Etc

WP3 Dissemination setup & QA /WP3.7 ChloroGIN Dissemination setup PML will set up the automated product transfer routines required for operational transfer and quality assurance of ChloroGIN data products from the data to the Ocean-Hub JRC and MA-RE will adapt the transfer routines for use with their processing and archiving systems, and undertake testing and further adaptation of both the transfer and QA routines in simulated operational use. - Setting up/testing of transfer routines - Documenting operational processes

WP4 Operational Dissemination /WP4.7 ChloroGIN Operational Dissemination MA-RE will undertake the processing of MERIS and MODIS data in near-real time with high level of availability for eight regions in Africa.MA-RE will monitor raw data supply via subscriptions from NASA for MODIS and from the ESA rolling archive for MERIS - Daily processing of MODIS/MERIS data for Sub-Saharan African coastal seas - Transfer of data to PML Ocean Hub - Operational adaptation e.g. to NASA/ESA global re-processing changes

WP5 User support / WP5.7 ChloroGIN User support Ensure that the users receive the necessary training and have all necessary technical documentation. ad-hoc training and two regional workshops two resource persons will attend the advanced training session at ITC to facilitate collaboration between the land and marine user communities. provide product & technical documentation. produce a user manual. taking account of user feedback received during ad-hoc training sessions.hands-on lessons demonstrating potential applications of the data training material of 3 types A central help-desk will be set up at MA-RE. 11 WP5 User support /WP5.7 ChloroGIN User support Training course SC1 GEONETCast and the monitoring of African Marine Ecosystems Three of the DevCoCast African Users also attended the IGARSS conference and presented within two specialist regional ocean colour and LME sessions: Mbaye Diop: Sea surface temperature survey using Meteosat Second Generation along the Senegalese cost Dr. George Wiafe: Development of an Integrated Coastal Erosion Assessment Program along the Coastline of Ghana Kwame Agyekum: Observations of thermal vibrations in the mixed layer depth of the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic Additionally, five members of the DevCoCast team also presented related research in these specialist sessions at the IGARSS conference. The OceanSAfrica Operational Oceanography Workshop organised by ACCESS and MA-RE was also held the week after the IGARSS conference and was attended by Dr. George Wiafe and Kwame Agyekum.

Operational Oceanography Workshop 9 June 1 July 2011 The workshop attracted twenty-nine attendees from fourteen institutes across nine African countries, and was collaboratively funded by EAMNet/DevCocast, the Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Studies (ACCESS), the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research, and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD). Lecturers and teachers came from many disciplines and institutes, both in Cape Town and abroad: UCT, CSIR, IRD (France), NOCS (UK), NERSC (Norway). Training was given in four modules: GEONETCast Receiving Station Operations; Marine Earth Observation; Ocean Modelling; Data Analysis. ± 10 UCT M.Sc/PhD students acted as teaching assistants, and 10 additional UCT Hons/M.Sc students attended the Data Analysis module

The main challenges were logistical issues surrounding the acquisition and delivery of the antenna, computers and accessory equipment. In the end, The TT DVB card was found to be more than suitable for data reception when compared to other South African providers put together an installation kit containing all the necessary DVB cards. Some users had difficulty acquiring the signal from the Atlanticbird 3 satellite. This was components, and these were shipped to users for local installation. solved by adjusting the pointing of the dish while checking the signal at the computer, which was Complete cost of station with 2 PC workstations ± 4 5K eventually locked on by re-pointing the dish.

WP10 Capacity Acquisition /WP10.1 Capacity Acquisition in Africa Users will be provided with assistance in setting up sufficient data storage capacity and workstations for data analysis and for using the data operationally, using new and reconfigured existing systems and/or configuring the software they re accustomed to. All users were provided with two standardised Dell workstations with RAID backup one for reception, one for processing. Appropriate open source/free software for acquisition (ILWIS/GeoNetCast Toolbox) and data processing (BILKO/BEAM/SeaDAS) has been provided with training & set up assistance..

WP11.1 Integration in Decision making processes in Africa Direct and external support will be provided to African marine partner institutes, as demonstration users, to present the outcomes of the project to regional (LME structures) and national decision makers, and present long term strategies for sustainable operation and ongoing development. - See DevCoCast Partner Applications Presentations - Senegal: Potential fishing zones & resource management Ghana: Potential fishing zones & resource management Namibia: Ecosystem variability, fisheries, HABS Tanzania: Potential fishing zones & management, coral bleaching

Towards the future: Development of ecosystem-specific downstream products i.e. resource/operational rather than scientific data.. Integration of/with strategic initiatives for marine (& aquatic) GMES-Africa, MESA. and capacity building as part of these regional strategies to create clearly identified expertise within sustainable framework. Coastal - > Inland water quality in next year with African MERIS FR through ESA DDS system, GEO Water Quality Group/ChloroGIN-Lakes/TIGER II OceanSAfrica Operational Oceanography initiative (South Africa): platform for strategic African development, integration with modelling & in situ thrusts, building GIS-type dissemination/analysis platforms.integration of these with GMES-Africa related initiatives
