11 ID Cards RETIREE ID CARD New ID cards needed to reflect sponsor s retired status (gray area retiree/retiree receiving pay) Needed for Retiree to use benefits DEPENDANT ID CARDS Children eligible to age 21 or 26 if full-time student; indefinite if incapacitated Permanent ID card to retiree s dependent at age 75 or who is permanently disabled Dependent parents/parents-in-law/grandchildren may qualify

12 ID Cards FORMER SPOUSE ID CARDS Authorized ONLY if: - Marriage lasted at least 20 years, AND - Service for retired pay was at least 20 years If above two conditions are met, the former spouse is authorized : Full dependant benefits (marriage overlaps 20 years) 1 year of TRICARE (marriage overlaps 15 years) No benefits if the marriage overlaps less than 15 years of military service.

16 Eligibility For Early Draw of Retired Pay Public Law passed by Congress and Effective 28 Jan 2008 Reserve members can draw retired pay 3 months early for every 90 cumulative days in a Fiscal Year Eligible Mobilizations include: - Title 10 USC 688, 12301(a), 12302, 12304, 12305, 12406, 12301(d)(c) - Title 32 USC 502(f) **Continued support to make law retroactive to Sept 11, 2001

21 Facts about Retired Pay THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN TSP contributions stop upon transfer to the Retired Reserves Your options at retirement: Do nothing and draw returns at age 60 Not affected by early draw legislation Roll into an IRA May resume active participation in TSP if you become a federal civilian employee

22 Facts about Retired Pay RETIRED PAY AS DIVISIBLE PROPERTY Award of retired pay is not tied to length of marriage!! Federal law permits state courts to treat retired pay as divisible property Direct payment requirements: Marriage overlapped 10 years with service Limited to 50% of disposable pay(up to 65% if other garnishments) Direct Payments do not stop if/when former spouse remarries

23 Medical Considerations RETIREMENT PHYSICAL Active Duty requires a retirement physical per AR , CH 8-23 Not Required for Reserve Component members, but recommended Your last, and up to date, record of active service health Assists with claim for VA service-connected disability Schedule through your Unit FTM

24 Medical Considerations YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS BELONG TO THE GOVERNMENT!! Ensure all medical documentation is in your records before you retire VA and other organizations will not accept hand carried records from the soldier Make a copy of your records May be difficult to obtain after you retire Another good reason for a retirement physical

25 VA Disability Compensation Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) VA Determines that disability is combat related CRSC is received by the retiree concurrently with retired pay Service Connected Disability VA Determines that disability is a result of military service Service Connected Disability is received by the retiree if disability is rated at 50% or higher (ratings of less than 50% will offset the soldier s retired pay) More information on these programs is available at And online:

31 More Benefits SGLV to VGLI SGLI is FREE for 120 days after transfer (or up to one year if 100% disabled) No physical required to convert SGLI to VGLI (if done within 120 days after ret) VGLI is a 5-yr renewable term policy Premiums may be paid by allotment, if paid monthly Discounts are offered for the following pay schedules: quarterly (2.5%) semi-annually (3.75%) annually (5%) Submit the first month s VGLI premium with your application If terminally ill, may receive up to 50% of policy s face value
