Contents This booklet is about money and how to keep it safe. Dosh will support you to look after your money and choose how to spend it. This is called financial advocacy. This booklet gives you information about money. There are some difficult words in this booklet. They will be highlighted the first time they are written. At the end of the booklet, there is a list explaining what all the words mean. Page 2
Contents This booklet talks about: what benefits are, the different types of benefits and how you get them; what banks are; what a bank statement is; what an invoice is; how you can get more information about money. Page 3
Benefits Benefits What are benefits? Pay Benefits are the money the government gives you to help you pay for things. This could be your care and support, your house or your food. The government office that pays benefits is called the Department for Work and Pensions. X Work Benefits are paid to you if you cannot work or do not earn enough money. There are also extra benefits for some groups of people. This includes disabled people. Page 4
Types of Benefits Benefits There are lots of different types of benefits for different people. Some benefits give you money because you cannot work or only work a little bit. X Work Income Support Employment and Support Allowance Benefits (ESA) Universal Credit Some benefits are for disabled people. Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) Benefits Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Incapacity Benefit There is also a benefit to help you pay for your house. This is called Housing Benefit. This will become part of Universal Credit. Benefits Page 5
Pension People who are over 65 years old can get a pension. A pension is money given to older people who do not work anymore. You will only get some of these benefits. The benefits you get depends on many things, including: the support you need; how old you are; when you started to get your benefits; how much money you have. Page 6
Getting your benefits Dosh will make sure you get all the benefits you should have. Dosh will tell you what benefits you are getting. Your benefits will be paid into a Dosh bank account just for your benefit money. You can use your benefit money to pay for things like food, your house, or a car. Your Dosh Financial Advocate can help you to plan how to spend your money. Page 7
Banks A bank is a company that looks after your money. A building society is like a bank and also looks after money. The bank or building society will keep your money safe in a bank account. This will only have your money in it. If you are supported by Dosh we will open a bank account for your money. We will look after the money in this account and support you to choose how you want to spend it. You may already have a bank account of your own. We can put money from your Dosh bank account into your personal bank account. Page 8
Benefits Your benefits will be paid into your Dosh bank account. You can talk to your Dosh Financial Advocate about how you want to spend your money. You can write it down together in your Money Plan. Dosh can pay for things like your telephone or electricity bill for you from your Dosh bank account. Dosh can also give you some money each week or each month from this account so that you can buy the things you like. Page 9
Your Dosh bank account is with a bank called Barclays. Each month, they will send a bank statement. This is a list of all the money you have spent and the money you have been paid. It will tell you how much money you have. Month Dosh will send you this bank statement every month. It is important that you keep your bank statement safe. You can look at it to check how much money you have. You can ask someone from your circle of support to help you understand it. Page 10
Invoices A company uses an invoice to ask to be paid. This could be from a hotel or a car rental company for example. An invoice is like a bill. It is a list of what you have bought. The company will send an invoice to ask to be paid. Pay Dosh will pay the invoice from your Dosh bank account for you every month. Page 11
