18 Governance: Strategy Preparing for Marriage An outsourcing relationship is like a marriage. The romance of the courtship or the airtight codicils of the prenuptial agreement do not contribute to the ongoing strength of the relationship. Involve the right people to compare, on an apples-to-apples basis, the provider s capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, agility and flexibility. Skills to manage the provider is different from the skills required to run an IT department. More mission critical the need, greater the need for high-touch delivery, cultural alignment and clear process for governance. Align the relationship on principles and guidelines instead of rules to prevent erosion of value and preservation of the end-user experience. Don t build a structure that motivates your provider to merely satisfy the contract as opposed to delivering value beyond the statistics. Source: Mike Atwood. Everest Group article The Art of Governance 18
19 Governance: Operational A Framework for Success Tactical to Operational Minimize disruption to Business Operations AND Reduce Operations risk for IT and Business Two key principles to governance require: Strategic, Tactical, and Operational Alignment Value Delivery i.e. Optimizing Costs Resource Management, i.e. Alignment of Resources Risk Management i.e. Compliance, Reduce Operational Risks. Performance Measurement i.e. Production, Project, Delivery and Performance. 19

21 Expectations of Cloud Services Manage your expected outcome by partnering with the right provider Strategic Advantage Support Ensuring Performance through Tailored Solutions with a Single Point of Accountability. Customer Intimacy Impeccable Track Record of Satisfied Customers Through a Predictable User Experience Cost Containment and Predictability 21
22 Achieving Expectations According to Gartner, 38% are dissatisfied with contracts. Service performance metrics are important but the relationship, customer satisfaction and strategic alignment are necessary. Define, communicate, agree, and document the expectations as part of the contract. Align the goals based on your business expectations, and avoid limiting them only to cost. Regularly assess your relationship. Communicate value delivered through scorecards and dashboards. Continuously monitor the success factors in your deal, and adjust the contract and performance measures. 22

30 Wrap Up Focus on the Success of the Relationship Covered: An update on the cloud market, including a discussion on how enterprises are using the cloud today Considerations and a methodology to transition your enterprise application to the cloud How to select the right cloud service provider for your enterprise Senior executives from business and IT need to set business goals and objectives of the relationship with your cloud provider. Focus holistically on the strategic importance of the business process and the IT elements, not just on price. Recognize, value and encourage the ability of the provider to infuse best practices and generate continual improvements. Flexible agreements encourage the sharing of risk and reward and the extension of business value which are essential to mutual success. 30

36 Expectations of Cloud Services Manage your expected outcome by partnering with the right provider Strategic Advantage Support A provider who enables the company to focus on their core competencies, while the service provider is focused on managing mission critical environments running the company. Ensuring Performance through Tailored Solutions with a Single Point of Accountability: High Touch delivery to provide the highest levels application support, and third-party partners, without multiple parties managing the company s mission critical environment. Customer Intimacy A partnership model that enables the provider to deliver on shared goals that benefit the company and the provider. Agile and flexible based governance model with commitment from the service provider to minimize interruption to business operations and reduce operations risk for IT and business. Impeccable Track Record of Satisfied Customers Through a Predictable User Experience Impeccable customer references who demand commitment to exceptional service and longterm stability from the provider, who will deliver on a predictable end-user experience.
