2 Health Reform separated policy and regulatory functions under the Ministry of Health, and publicly funded service delivery under the National Health Services and thus Nursing was divided as follows: Ministry of Health: The Health Service Performance Quality Assurance for Nursing & Midwifery division and headed by the Assistant CEO, Ministry of Health for Nursing & Midwifery. Nursing and Midwifery Education (include a diagrammatic illustration if available and the total number of nursing and midwifery schools) Nurses of Samoa are educated in the National University of Samoa, within the Faculty of Nursing and Health Science. The FONHS offers the following nursing programmes: Foundation Certificate Nursing (one year duration) and a prerequisite for the nursing undergraduate program Diploma in Nursing (2 years duration) Bachelor in Nursing (3 Years duration Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing: o Midwifery (one year) o Mental Health (one year) o Primary Health Care (one year) o High Dependency and Acute Care (one year) Postgraduate Certificate in Pacific Health Leadership and Management Development Postgraduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching for Nurses and Health Professionals Competency based registration with the Samoan Council of nurses and midwives. Graduates from NUS enter the MOH Mentored Orientation program for 1 year to meet requirements for registration before they can practice as RN s or EN s. 7. Main nursing issues/priorities: Difficulty in attracting school leavers to enrolled in nursing programme Inability of the FONHS to produce the appropriate number of graduates to meet the demand of the service. Reforms currently undergoing within the university, has cause great concern in the attempt of the university to merge the FONHS as one of the three Schools within the newly established Faculty of Applied Science (FOAS). The other two schools are School of Maritime and School of Engineering FONHS is disputing the decision due to the inappropriateness of the merge with engineers and maritime and especially resourcing implications which will compromise the standards for nursing program. Lower level of clinical practice in the undergraduate program Main midwifery issues/priorities: Improved number and quality of entrants to Nursing Program as noted by MOH being the main sponsor of nursing students Faculty of Nursing & Health Science, has changed to being a school within the Applied Science Faculty as noted above as a concern but now a reality. 9.
