1 NORTH BURLINGTON WOMEN S PROBUS CLUB NOV/DEC 2015 NEWSLETTER MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT JOANNE GILLELAND As I write this message, the Federal Election is finally over and we have a majority Liberal government for at most the next four years. I guess Justin Trudeau was ready! The Blue Jays won their American League East Division and are now fighting valiantly against the pesky Kansas City Royals but are down 3 games to 2. You will know the outcome by the time you read this. And finally, Christmas is less than 2 months away. Time to start making your Christmas shopping list. VOLUME 9, ISSUE 2 I want to thank our Executive for a great start to the PROBUS year. To the Speaker s Committee for the excellent speakers we have had so far. Both Beth Gilhespy and Ellie Tesher provided us with interesting and informative talks. I look forward to hearing Susan Clairmont speak on her work as a Crime Reporter for the Hamilton Spectator. It s sure to prove entertaining. Thanks go to the Special Events Committee for planning the great trip to St. Jacob s. I saw many of our ladies with parcels after shopping the unique stores in town. After lunch, we were thoroughly entertained by the talented, hilarious and swashbuckling troupe in Gilbert and Sullivan s Pirates of Penzance. There were many smiling faces after the delightful performance. I hope you have your ticket for the Christmas Luncheon at the Burlington Golf and Country Club on Wednesday December 2. There will be a very special musical treat in store for those attending. There are several things to look for in this Newsletter. Rollande Richard has put out an urgent request for volunteer greeters for our meetings. This is a rewarding job and one that takes very little of your time. It s a great way to meet new people. If you can help, please sign the request sheet on the back table and if possible, tell Rollande which month you would be available to help. 1

2 A prize will be awarded to the member whose name is drawn with the correct answer to the Quote of the Month. Just name the book the quote is from and the book s author. Remember to put your own name on your submission. It s not too early to start thinking about joining next year s Executive. If you have any questions about what that would involve then please ask any one of us on this year s Executive. Also if you have any suggestions on how we could celebrate our 10th anniversary next year then write your idea down and put it in the Suggestion Box. We want to make the event very special for our club. I was thinking maybe sending the Past President to Hawaii would be a good choice! Please remember to wear your name badges to each meeting. If you have lost your badge then contact the Membership Co -Chairs Irene Hayworth and Sue Pridham to order another one. I look forward to seeing many of you at our next meeting and at the Christmas Luncheon. VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT - Aita Moore 2016 PARKING PASSES Parking Passes for the year 2016 from January until December, with the exception of June and December, will be available for purchase at the next three PROBUS Meetings (November, December and January). The cost is $24.00 and will be honoured from 9:00-12:00 noon on each of the meeting dates. Payment may be made by cash or cheque. Your cheque is to be made out to the North Burlington Women s PROBUS Club. The total amount of the passes sold will be paid to the Burlington Art Gallery by one cheque by our club. Come and see me at a table in the back during the above meeting dates if you wish to purchase a Parking Pass. SPEAKERS SPEAKER - NOVEMBER 3, 2015 MEETING Susan Clairmont ~ Crime Reporter Susan Clairmont is a Crime Reporter for the Hamilton Spectator. If I didn t get into journalism school, I would ve gone to law school, she says. After completing graduate school, Clairmont began working the crime beat following a gig as a general assignment reporter at The Peterborough Examiner. Clairmont has covered some of the most grisly crimes in the City. She reconciles gruesome details and ordinary human interaction every day. 2

3 When she started at the Examiner, she primarily worked with men and says she sought to mimic their unemotional attitudes and their focus on perpetrators. Now, her coverage focuses on more than just the accused. She s particularly passionate about the victims, sometimes preferring to write about them rather than the accused. SPECIAL EVENTS NORTH BURLINGTON PROBUS CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON Wednesday, Dec. 2 nd, Burlington Golf & Country Club The doors will open at 11:30 with lunch at 12 noon. Entertainment FOLLIES Our next meeting will be the last time to buy your ticket for the luncheon. Ticket price is $38. If you are unable to attend, please send a cheque with a friend or contact Pat Barnes at or pm.barnes@hotmail.com FRIENDSHIP COMMITTEE I m looking after the Friendship Committee so if you know of a member who needs cheering up due to surgery, a serious illness or has suffered a bereavement, please notify me by and I will send a card on behalf of our PROBUS Club. sjmarshall@cogeco.ca 50/50 DRAW Held at each PROBUS meeting. 3
