1 Tame Data Center Challenges with Intel SSDs and Symantec Software Harness SSD Speed with Granular Control SSD Success: Look Beyond Throughput Enterprise IT professionals across all vertical markets are evaluating solid state drives (SSDs) for data center use. SSDs are increasingly attractive as prices fall while I/O operations per second (IOPS) rise, so IT professionals are eager to see how the technology can help them increase efficiency and performance. Some server and storage manufacturers build their value propositions around SSD throughput, as if faster drives in the data center would solve all your problems. As you already know, SSDs are indeed incredibly fast faster by orders of magnitude than their traditional spinning disk counterparts (see figure 1). However, record-breaking throughput alone has not been enough to motivate widespread SSD deployment in enterprise data centers. It is difficult for some IT professionals to justify the comparatively high acquisition cost of SSDs. When measured by the traditional metric of cost per gigabyte, SSDs do indeed appear difficult to justify. But that traditional metric is a poor fit because it measures the cost of raw storage space. However, you do not purchase SSDs to store data. You purchase them to get data more read input/output operations per second (IOPS) HDD: Seagate Cheetah 15K.7: 181 random read IOPS; 391 random write IOPS Intel SSD DC S3700 Series: 75,000 random read IOPS; 36,000 random write IOPS

2 as quickly as possible to where it needs to go you re interested in throughput. So the metric that matters is cost per (IOPS). This metric shows how much you are paying to feed data to users and applications, and using this measurement, it s clear that SSDs are more cost effective than HDDs (see figure 2). Even so, the throughput that is possible with SSDs are only part of the value they can bring to your data center. Your workloads are varied and unique to your business, and not every workload requires high IOPS. So even if you were to blanket the data center with SSDs, the infusion of speed by itself would not resolve your most pressing data center challenges. You would still struggle against storage overprovisioning and the resulting underutilized storage, as do 31 percent of enterprises. 1 Throughput alone won t resolve the challenges associated with quickly growing data volumes, such as storage sprawl and rising costs. In fact, throughput by itself might not even clear the I/O bottlenecks your data center is experiencing. These challenges require more than raw IOPS: they also need automated management of data and storage. This capability also increases application availability by rerouting I/Os to healthy data paths in the event of a path failure. Centralize storage management: With Veritas Operations Manager, a feature of Veritas Storage Foundation, you can get full visibility into the dependencies between applications, their physical or virtual servers, and storage resources in heterogeneous environments. With that visibility and the Operations Manager console, you can centrally manage these resources to accelerate deployment times, decrease the potential for human error, and improve your ability to meet service level agreements (SLAs). And, since CPU cores are no longer waiting for reads and writes on the SAN, CPU utilization improves. It closes the performance gap between servers and spinning disks: While computing power on the server has increased exponentially since the early days of x86 computing, HDD IOPS capacity has not kept pace. Multi-core servers and dense virtualization environments create I/O demands that HDD simply cannot fulfill.
