3 Intrductin f the Dual Degree Master s Prgram The Calitin fr Cultural Cmpetency (CCC), frmerly knwn as the Center fr Multicultural Research, Training and Cnsultatin (CMRTC) and the Department f Educatinal, Schl and Cunseling Psychlgy (ESCP), University f Missuri- Clumbia and the Department f Educatinal Psychlgy and Cunseling (EPC), Natinal Taiwan Nrmal University (NTNU) have a distinguished histry f mutually beneficial prfessinal cllabratin. Bth universities agreed t endrse crss-cultural cllabratin and strngly encurage qualified EPC and ESCP students t receive training frm bth universities. In 2007, the CCC and the Department f ESCP at MU, and the Department f EPC at NTNU signed a memrandum f agreement t establish the Master's Dual Degree Prgram (DDMP). The prgram was develped t train future educatinal and cunseling psychlgists t live and wrk in an increasingly glbal sciety. T this end, the DDMP was designed t prmte pprtunities fr internatinal educatin as well crss-cultural cmpetencies. The MU Dual Degree Master s Prgram is the first Dual Degree Prgram f its kind at the graduate schl level in the cunseling psychlgy field acrss the wrld. The signing ceremny between MU and NTNU tk place in fall During the signing ceremny, Dr. Brady Deatn, MU Chancellr, indicated that Thrugh this prgram, educatinal and cunseling psychlgists will learn abut the critical rle f culture in their discipline by cmpleting graduate cursewrk and n-site experiences at bth Universities. Students accepted and enrlled in a master s degree prgram frm either Department are eligible t apply fr the Dual Degree Prgram. Graduates wh have cmpleted at least ne year f the master s degree at the hme institutin, and meet the graduatin credit requirements f bth Departments, will receive dual master s degrees frm bth Universities. Since 2007, thirteen qualified NTNU and 3 MU graduate students have enrlled in this prgram. Currently, the Dual Degree Prgram is crdinated by tw MU faculty, Dr. Puncky Heppner ( and C-Directr) and Dr. Barbara Williamsn (Assciate Teaching and Assciate Directr), as well as ne NTNU faculty, Dr. Li-fei Wang (). 4 Descriptin f The Dual Degree Master s Prgram Prgram Objectives The missin f the Dual Degree Master s Prgram is t prmte internatinal educatin as well as internatinal relatinships between schlars, students, and departments. The Prgram seeks t prvide a multi-dimensinal educatinal and cunseling training experience fr graduate students t enhance their knwledge and skills in cunseling as well as develp greater cmpetencies t wrk with clients frm diverse backgrunds. The Prgram als aims t expand student and faculty knwledge f cultural assumptins s they can mre apprpriately navigate acrss cultural bundaries. The prgram creates pprtunities t study psychlgy frm a Western cultural perspective, as well as a year lng cultural immersin in the U.S. and Midwest cultures. The prgram als fsters an envirnment, which encurages interactins between Dual Degree students and MU graduate students in the ESCP Department. Dual Degree students can chse frm an array f curses in areas such as career develpment and cunseling, cunseling theries, grup cunseling, assessment, research methds, multicultural cunseling, advanced statistical analysis (HLM, SEM), advanced human learning, educatinal psychlgy, and human develpment, all taught by experienced psychlgy faculty. The curses prvide many pprtunities t acquire cutting-edge scientific knwledge as well as research and practice skills. They will als have pprtunities t participate in and cntribute t research team meetings, utreach prjects, and prfessinal develpment activities at MU. Bth dual degree students and MU students learn frm each ther thrugh their encunters and interactins, and sharing infrmatin abut their individual strengths, career develpment, and cultural values and practices. Advisr Each Dual Degree student is assigned an ESCP faculty advisr, and will nt nly gain valuable experiences cnnecting with their faculty advisr, but have pprtunities fr many mutual cultural exchanges. 7 Graduate Assistant An advanced MU dctral student in cunseling psychlgy is appinted each year t assist Drs. Heppner and Williamsn t prmte students persnal and prfessinal develpment enrlled in the Dual Degree Prgram. The graduate assistant meets with Dual Degree students weekly t: (a) prvide students with a culturally-sensitive rientatin t the Department, MU campus, Clumbia cmmunity, and general living in the U.S., (b) help students with paperwrk, and registratin, and (c) c-teach the CrssCultural Psychlgy curse (see details belw). The graduate assistant als serves as a mentr fr Dual Degree students in a variety f areas (e.g., career develpment, identity develpment, cunseling skills). 8 A Crss- Cultural Curse Designed Specifically fr Dual Degree Students A special curse has been designed specifically fr Dual Degree students. Thrugh enrlling in the Crss-Cultural Psychlgy curse, dual degree students will develp a greater understanding f the rle f the cultural cntext and hw it impacts human psychlgical functining. They will learn, first hand, abut diverse U.S. cultural values and practices as well as abut ther internatinal students life experiences. Students will receive supprt frm peers and the instructr(s) and have pprtunities t reflect n and prcess their crss-cultural/natinal jurney. The curse facilitates students awareness and knwledge abut their persnal adjustment experiences and relevant research findings n crss-cultural adjustment. Students subsequently acquire mre skills and abilities that culd help them t becme culturally sensitive and effective with clients frm diverse cultural backgrunds in the U.S. and in their cuntries f rigin. The curse is year-lng and cnsists f bth didactic and experiential cmpnents. Students read psychlgy articles and bk chapters related t tpics such as cultural shck, adjustment, cultural diversity, and language self-efficacy. In additin, experiential learning in and utside f class as well as persnal reflectin is emphasized. In additin, lectures and guest speakers are utilized t further expand students knwledge. Sample Curse Activities: Didactic: (a) lectures and readings n varius tpics (e.g., cultural shck and cmmn emtins and behavirs, crss-cultural cping, interpersnal relatinships, scial supprt), (b) guest speakers (e.g., students and faculty with lnger-term crsscultural/natinal experiences, internatinals r immigrants), and (c) relevant mvies r videtapes. Experiential: (a) campus tur, (b) dwntwn tur, (c) U.S. cllege students scial events, (d) festival events, (e) students and faculty scials, and (f) visiting student rganizatins r lcal resurces. 9 Prgram Benefits Dual Degree students have reprted benefiting frm the Prgram acrss many dimensins, including having a prfund impact n their career and lives. Specifically, benefits include: (a) advanced psychlgical knwledge, (b) enhanced scientific thinking skills, (c) better understanding abut the rle f the cultural cntext in human behavir, including crss-cultural transitins, (d) specific, up-t-date knwledge f current training and practice in educatinal and cunseling psychlgy, (e) deeper understanding abut majr educatinal and cunseling theries, including multiculturalism, (f) advanced research and educatinal psychlgy skills, (g) advanced psychlgical interventins in cunseling psychlgy, (h) a greater sense f independence and self-efficacy, (i) establishment f meaningful persnal and cllabrative relatinships, and (j) infrmatin and knwledge abut different U.S. cultures. Fllwing are a few qutes frm Dual Degree students abut hw they experienced the Dual Degree Master s Prgram and the influence it had n them. Hsia-Wen Lia ( ) indicated: The Dual Degree Prgram is ttally wrth it! Yur life will never be the same after yu immerse yurself and pursue higher educatin in a freign culture. Jian-Liang Chen ( ) stated: I have acquired lts f knwledge and skills in classes and team training sessins. Mrever, I have gt t knw myself better by immersing myself in every single experience and the Midwest daily life. Tsu-Lun Huang ( ) stated: Thrugh this prgram, I experienced different cultures utside Taiwan, which bradened my viewpints and gave me new insights abut myself. Studying at the University f Missuri fr a Favrite curse at MU: My favrite curse at MU is Dr. Herman's Parent Cunseling and Cnsultatin class since this class fcuses n hw t cperate with parents f children r adlescents. I was trained with a parenting training prgram named Incredible Years, and that prgram is really useful and practical as an interventin. Als, Dr. Gysbers' Career class is anther great class, I really enjy the way he addressed the career infrmatin and thse rich materials ffered by him. 10 year is a fresh experience and I enjyed it a lt. Frankly speaking, it is nt always fun, but it des help me flurish a big heart t embrace everything and having an pen mind t think/wrk independently. Chinghui Tsu ( ) wrte in her reflectin paper: Studying abrad is a gd way t experience a different culture and learn English, als yu make lts f friends frm different cuntries. What s mre, it enhances my cultural-awareness and empathy twards future clients. It makes my knwledge frm head t heart. I really appreciate this chance t study at the University f Missuri fr ne year, and I strngly encurage every challengetaker t apply fr this prgram! Tsu- Lun Huang, 2009 I-Hsin Chan ( ) stated: This was an pprtunity t let myself be challenged and t be frced t step ut my cmfrt zne. It s difficult smetimes but als rewarding One f the mst valuable experiences I gt here was being a minrity. As I became a minrity in the sciety, I started t realize that I ignred lts f inequivalence in my hme sciety and hw it feels t be a minrity. Meanwhile, I gradually was able t be mre empathetic t the minrity in my wn culture as well. Fu-Wei Hung ( ) shared: I am glad that I made the decisin t thrw myself ut f my cmfrt zne and gave myself a chance t study and experience life at Mizzu. Thugh it was really nt easy and tk much effrt t adjust t American culture in the beginning, I had s many take-aways and great memries after this year f learning. A fruitful and exciting year indeed! My eyes have been pened t peple wh cme frm different cultural backgrunds, and I had chances t really think abut what psitin I am at in this flatter and glbal wrld! Very appreciative fr having such chance t braden my hrizns. Chia-Chi Lia ( ) shared: Fr my persnal cultural jurney, I keep being aware f my adaptatin with this new envirnment There are s many times we feel like babies trying t figure ut the situatins we are encuntering hwever, with the DUAL DEGREE MASTER S PROGRAM 10

11 length f immersin experience, we were be able t understand mre abut living skills r sme knwledge, and with the learning we becme mre mature abut the ambiguity that we have met; then finally we knw hw t respect the difference and create a new way f living with bth cultural cntexts in ur lives. Zi-Hui Lia ( ) shared her experience: I appreciate the Dual Degree Master's Prgram. The crss-cultural life is a rich jurney. There were many challenges in the crss-cultural life but I learned a lt frm it. I had many special experiences during this year and they bradened my hrizn. I gained mre knwledge and cultural awareness. I als understd myself better. 12 Department f Educatinal, Schl, and Cunseling Psychlgy (ESCP) Overview f ESCP Department The ESCP ffers Master's, Educatinal Specialist, and PhD degrees in Educatinal Psychlgy, Schl Psychlgy, Cunseling Psychlgy, and Health Educatin and Prmtin. The PhD prgrams in cunseling psychlgy and schl psychlgy are bth accredited by the American Psychlgical Assciatin; the schl cunseling prgram is fully accredited by the State f Missuri. The graduate prgrams in the department have excellent natinal and internatinal reputatins. In fact, the 2009 U.S. News & Wrld Reprt ranked the MU Cunseling Psychlgy Prgram third in the natin. The Department f Educatinal, Schl, and Cunseling Psychlgy is hme t mre than 250 full time graduate students, and 80 students are enrlled in the n-line graduate prgram in Mental Health Practices in the Schls. The cunseling graduate prgram is particularly attractive t internatinal and minrity students as ver 50% f the students are either internatinal r an American minrity. ESCP is an energetic place that prvides a diverse, supprtive, caring, and intellectually stimulating learning envirnment fr students. Students have indicated that faculty are mre than academic advisrs and teachers they are mentrs prviding students with rle mdels featuring the scientist-practitiner mdel. ESCP graduates have fund many ESCP students celebrate the Chinese New Year with faculty prfessinal pprtunities available t them, including successful careers in cunseling centers, universities, clleges, private practice, public schls, private schls, state departments f educatin, testing cmpanies, industry cunseling firms, mental health facilities, hspitals, public health departments, and business and industry firms.
