Research projects are also a possibility. There are lots of assessment experiences available. Contact: Patricia M. Averill, Ph.D. (Adult Services, UT-HCPC, 3-A25) (713) Samoan C. Johnson, Ph.D. (C/A Services, UT-HCPC, 1-B60) (713) UT-Harris County Psychiatric Center Clientele/Experience Gained: There are 8 adult inpatient units, which include 7 general adult units and a detox unit. The length of stay for the juvenile unit is approximately 6 weeks. For the other two units it is 7 to 10 days. Child/Adolescent Experiences: On the Child/Adolescent Service, psychology practicum students participate in the following clinical activities: attendance to morning patient staffings (i.e., treatment team rounds); admission screening assessments and referred psychological evaluations; feedback and consultation with treatment teams, patients and parents; group therapy (focused on anger management, coping skills development) co-leadership with a psychological updated: 12/

14 associate; and limited experiences for referred individual therapy or staff talks. Attendance to Grand Rounds at UTMSI and observation at the UT-HCPC probate court are also training enrichment opportunities. Participation in on-going research that is integrated with clinical activities is an option as well. Adult Experiences: Practicum students have the opportunity to provide individual and group therapy, as well as psychological assessment. Individual therapy is brief and focused (given the short length of stay) and utilizes cognitive-behavioral theory and techniques. Typically the student may see a patient for 3-4 sessions. Group therapy is co-led with a master s level LPC or Social worker with ACP licensure. These groups tend to be focused on management of mental illness, coping skills, anger management, or dual diagnosis. Assessment may include cognitive (this may include intellectual and some neuropsychological assessment), personality and achievement components, depending on the nature of the question. The student is involved in both administration and report writing. In addition to these active components of the experience, student have the opportunity to sit in on rounds, provide verbal reports on assessment results to the treatment team and write notes in the chart. In addition, since we have the probate court at UT-HCPC, students have the opportunity to watch commitment hearings. Finally, there are opportunities for practicum students who are interested in being involved in research projects. Duration: Trainees can start in the Fall. Additional Info: The UT Harris County Psychiatric Center is a 250-bed acute care inpatient mental health facility providing psychiatric services to adults, adolescents and children. It is accredited by JCAHO. Psychiatrists and psychologists of the UT Medical School faculty supervise the patient care provided by psychology and psychiatry residents, psychology practicum trainees and medical students working at UT-HCPC. Nursing students and social work trainees also obtain training experience at UT-HCPC. Multidisciplinary treatment teams utilize a biopsychosocial approach to patient care. The patient population is ethnoculturally diverse and individuals are admitted with presenting problems covering a broad spectrum of severe psychiatric disorders and developmental disabilities. The application includes the student's contacting the psychology faculty member who supervises training on the inpatient service of interest (Dr. Patricia M. Averill, adult services or Dr. Samoan C. Johnson, child/adolescent services). The supervisor and the applicant will arrange an interview to address training background, interests, training goals and the supervisor s training expectations. Then the supervisor and applicant will make a decision about whether UT-HCPC practicum is a good fit for the student. Students should contact the supervisor at least 6 weeks prior to the term they wish to begin the practicum. Typically, practicum students are encouraged to commit to the child/adolescent or the adult area. If a student desires practicum experience in both areas, he/she can work on each service for a period of no less than one academic term. Simultaneous involvement in the child/adolescent and adult areas is not an option because continuity and breadth of learning experience would be compromised. updated: 12/

15 CPSY Approved Field Practicum Sites In order to maximize the benefits of the UT-HCPC practicum experience, applicants should complete all courses pertaining to theory, psychopathology, psychotherapy, test construction and psychological assessment (i.e., administration and scoring of intelligence/cognitive, achievement and personality instruments and some experience with interpretation of test results). Psychological intervention experience is preferred (i.e. students have completed at least one practicum experience or completed an experience at their departmental clinic). Students who are interested in participating in assessment activities should plan to commit a minimum of 16 hours per week to the practicum during regular working hours (8am to 5pm) for any three or four days, Monday through Friday. At least two of the student s working days at HCPC should be consecutive. Before the students can begin participation in clinical and/or research activities at UT-HCPC, the following documentation must be submitted: an inter-institutional agreement between a student s university and the UT-Houston Health Science Center; a program agreement between offices of the student s department of major study and UT-HCPC; and proof of the student s liability insurance.
