ONLINE CLASSIFIEDS Online classifieds is the fully democratic consumer to consumer (C2C) trading of used goods through an online platform. Naspers Online Classifieds is building leading positions in emerging markets by developing or acquiring businesses and growing them into market leaders. Predominantly operating under the brand name OLX, the company unites many cultures and styles into one multinational. The group creates maximum value by encouraging bottom-up entrepreneurship, tailoring group support to local needs. The purpose is to improve people s lives by bringing them together for win-win exchanges. UNIQUELY POSITIONED The business model of online classifieds has proven successful in developed economies. Naspers is now replicating this success into emerging markets and has the unique position to do so. The company has a strong track record of entrepreneurial growth on the southern hemisphere and has access to large revenue streams from previous investments in Tencent, e-commerce and pay television. This luxury provides ample room for a solid, long-term strategy. BIG DATA Naspers Classifieds is currently present in 40+ countries and boasts over 200 million active monthly users worldwide, generating more than 11 billion monthly page views. These accumulate to petabytes of invaluable data. Naspers therefore acknowledges the dominant roles of modern technology, big data and product innovation in the online industry in general and at Naspers in particular. Therefore, great effort and attention are put in to hiring the best people available from the world over for the Customer Lifecycle Management (CLM) team. The team will consist of tech-savvy professionals with complimentary and synergizing skills in data science, data engineering, customer experience, personalization and product management. Following are two job descriptions, but candidates with skills overlapping both are very welcome in this team and will find their responsibilities adjusted accordingly. 3 PERSONALIZATION PRODUCT OWNER A data driven product strategist Possible locations: Buenos Aires and Berlin OBJECTIVE The role of the Personalization Product Owner (PPO) is highly strategic, because personalization is the main focus for the CLM team to keep the Classifieds Platform engaging and relevant for all users across the different markets. The primary goal is to translate high-level customer treatment blueprints into innovative product features and functionality across all product platforms and ensuring they are tailored to the consumer s needs and wishes. A CLM toolkit for local use has been compiled and will be rolled out in 40 countries this year. The PPO will coordinate implementation across all markets from a global vantage point, in close cooperation with central and regional product, marketing and customer care teams. To keep advancing on innovation and actionable insights, the PPO will also work closely with CLM team mates in data science and engineering. RESPONSIBILITIES Translate data insights into business implications and pragmatic actions Lead the prototyping and design of global customer treatments across product, marketing and customer care Coordinate work across product, marketing and customer care teams Upgrade innovation to disruptive levels Evangelise views and lead stakeholders Test, analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the customer treatments, constantly learning and refining the approach Communicate insights and results to nonexpert global and local teams Develop and coordinate a simple but effective knowledge management & sharing platform to ensure successful sharing of best practices CANDIDATE PROFILE Loves data mining, customization and personalization because every customer is unique and the goal is to make them happy 5-8 years working in a customer-centric online environment Product development across mobile and web Marketing campaign development Working with and leading cross-functional teams Superb project management skills - proven ability to prioritize varying commitments and influencing direct reports and other business stakeholders Experience with A/B and multivariate testing approaches VISIT TOPOFMINDS.COM FOR MORE E-COMMERCE OPPORTUNITIES 3 / 5
4 DATA SCIENTIST / ENGINEER Mining value pockets in an ocean of big data Possible locations: Buenos Aires and Berlin OBJECTIVE The Data Scientist /Engineer will upgrade innovation to disruptive levels. How? By analyzing the vast amounts of data on customer behavior on the different platforms, identifying value pockets and communicating actionable insights to the Product, Marketing and Customer Care teams. RESPONSIBILITIES The CLM team is very agile, so roles are subject to constant change. A Data Scientist / Engineer starting today would work on: Mining the database of raw customer behavior data (> 1 petabyte, billions of rows and > 100 million customers) to generate best-in-class insights) Setting up and maintaining analytical (big) data environments including distributed data structures Using machine-learning algorithms to discover and identify actionable patterns in data Developing and building customer-centric predictive models for customer lifetime value and churn Developing and maintaining actionable customer segmentation Translating business problems into analytical methodology Promoting data-science across Naspers as a thought leader and guiding stakeholders in unlocking the value in their data Communicating complex analysis in a clear, understandable way to nonexpert global and local teams RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Candidates are selected on their high ambitions and winner s attitude as much as their skills and experience. Relevant experience and skills include: Broad experience conducting customer analytics on large data sets PhD or Masters in a quantitative discipline Rock star SQL skills across a variety of relational data warehousing technologies Experience with NoSQL databases Skilled with setting up and managing distributed Hadoop clusters and developing MapReduce algorithms using a variety of technologies Advanced modelling skills and experience with statistical analysis, machine learning and data mining Experience working with Amazon Redshift is a plus. 5 Whoever has the tech, has the future. That s true for Naspers, for sure. I ve never seen a company that s as visionary in the way they invest. So I m quite sure they re sailing the right course. With me on board. In the online industry, tech is not as confined as elsewhere. I ve always considered myself business-driven, rather than technology-focused. So when I finished my Masters in Computer Science and absorbed my first work experience, I completed my MBA at London Business School and joined Bain & Company as a strategy consultant. I moved to Naspers in March It s been quite the ride since. My mandate is in drawing value from our customer data, and this mandate and thus the scope of my work seems to be expanding by the minute. I m now assembling a team of data scientists to work with me in this process of value creation. The speed of it all is a rush. Not only because of the hyper growth of the company but also because of the short feedback loops. Everything in online classifieds revolves around data and can be changed almost instantaneously. I ve never seen a P&L grow from the clicks of a keyboard. It s the true connection between business and technology, which makes it the right fit for me.
