4 4 INTEL ROADMAP DIRECTIONS 2015 ENABLING NFV TO DELIVER ON ITS PROMISE Intel Xeon processor E v3 speeds up packet processing in virtualized environments. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is paving the way for more open, flexible, and economical networking and communications equipment based on general-purpose computing platforms instead of traditional proprietary, purpose-built products. Intel Technologies Driving the NFV Advantage Huge Pages: The Intel Xeon processor E v3 product family allows a virtual machine monitor (VMM) to assign larger memory pages to VMs, which helps to greatly minimize overhead. Inter-VM Communication Schemes: Network functions typically collaborate with each other, necessitating a low-latency inter-vm communication scheme that overcomes typical performance overheads. Cache Monitoring and Allocation: Intel Cache Monitoring Technology allows an operating system or VMM to determine how much L3 cache each software thread is using; and Intel Cache Allocation Technology can intelligently partition the L3 cache. NFV is having a profound impact on the design and deployment of next-generation networking and communications equipments. Intel Xeon processor E v3 product family, with technologies that can significantly reduce virtualization latency or its impact, makes it particularly well-suited for demanding networking applications. 5 A RESOURCE GUIDE FOR CIOs AND IT PROFESSIONALS 5 HOW INTEL IT SUCCESSFULLY MIGRATED TO CLOUDERA APACHE HADOOP* Identifying new opportunities to reduce IT costs and extend BI capabilities (Abstract of the White Paper - How Intel IT Successfully Migrated to Cloudera Apache Hadoop* - Published by IT@Intel ) Forming a strategic partnership with Cloudera, Intel IT adopted Cloudera Distribution for Apache Hadoop (CDH), and migrated quickly from Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop (IDH). Careful planning, thorough testing, proactive communications, and efficient management of scope, schedules, and skills helped enable a successful migration. CDH Advantages Features Desirable features, mature feature sets, and faster releases Support Vendor-based enterprise-level support Tools Enterprise-grade management and software development tools Open Source Full distribution from the Apache Hadoop open-source project Source: Conclusion Although this Hadoop migration was complex and involved multiple layers of change, the move was successful. We experienced little dependency on the application teams and did not encounter any significant issues associated with the migration from one distribution to another. When performing a Hadoop migration, consider the following tips: Choose the migration team carefully Gain from open-source options Keep design as simple as possible BEST PRACTICES FOR MIGRATING FROM IDH TO CDH A successful migration requires careful planning to cope with three key challenges: Coping with Hadoop variations Understanding the scope of the changes Completing the in-place migration in a timely manner To address these three challenges, the Intel IT migration team followed six best practices. Find Differences with a Comparative Evaluation in a Sandbox Environment From the results, the team constructed a compare-and-contrast table that identified gaps and described key differentiators. Define Our Strategy for the Cloudera Implementation Our component and option selections validated our sandbox findings and were incorporated into our migration strategy. We summarized the strategy, along with benefits, potential risks, and current status. Split the Hardware Environment The Intel IT migration team split the existing Hadoop hardware environment into two clusters (one for IDH and the other for CDH), completing the construction of the two parallel systems using available components Upgrade the Hadoop Version The move from Hadoop 1.0 to Hadoop 2.0 was simple and straightforward. The team gained desirable features that are not included in IDH, along with the advantages of an open-source platform. Create a Preproduction-to-Production Pipeline Creating a preproduction environment, powered by 128 cores (using Intel Xeon processors), enabled us to incrementally migrate data to the CDH environment and to start the data migration process early for rapid transition to the new CDH environment. Rebalance the Data We took advantage of a rebalancing feature in CDH that can be executed from the Cloudera Manager user interface. After each rebalance and data migration process, the team reassessed the data distribution and rebalanced as necessary. For more information on Intel IT best practices, visit

7 INTEL SECURITY TACKLING ATTACK DETECTION AND INCIDENT RESPONSE Discover the key factors that slow many organizations incident response rates A RESOURCE GUIDE FOR CIOs AND IT PROFESSIONALS 7 A new report, Tackling Attack Detection and Incident Response, from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), commissioned by Intel Security, examines organizations security strategies, cyber-attack environment, incident response challenges and needs. The survey found that security professionals are inundated with security incidents, averaging 78 investigations per organization in the last year, with 28 percent of those incidents involving targeted attacks one of the most dangerous and potentially damaging forms of cyber-attacks. According to the IT and security professionals surveyed, better detection tools, better analysis tools, and more training on how to deal with incident response issues are the top ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the information security staff. 28% incident of security incidents are targeted attacks; product integration, event comprehension, and insufficient skills are key challenges to timely response Better Integration Nearly 80 percent of the people surveyed believe the lack of integration and communication between security tools creates bottlenecks and interferes with their ability to detect and respond to security threats. Real-time, comprehensive visibility is especially important for rapid response to targeted attacks, and 37 percent called for tighter integration between security intelligence and IT operations tools. These responses suggest that the very common patchwork architectures of dozens of individual security products have created numerous silos of tools, consoles, processes and reports that prove very time consuming to use. These architectures are creating ever greater volumes of attack data that drown out relevant indicators of attack. Better Comprehension Security professionals surveyed claim that real-time security visibility suffers from limited understanding of user behavior and network, application, and host behavior. While the top four types of data collected are network-related, and 30 percent collect user activity data, it s clear that data capture isn t sufficient. Users need more help to contextualize the data to understand what behavior is worrisome. This gap may explain why nearly half (47 percent) of organizations said determining the impact or scope of a security incident was particularly time consuming. When it comes to incident detection and response, time has an ominous correlation to potential damage. The longer it takes an organization to identify, investigate, and respond to a cyber-attack, the more likely it is that their actions won t be enough to preclude a costly breach of sensitive data. With this in mind, CISOs should remember that collecting and processing attack data is a means toward action improving threat detection and response effectiveness and efficiency. - Jon Oltsik, Senior Principal Analyst, ESG

8 8 INTEL ROADMAP DIRECTIONS 2015 Better Analytics Users understand they need help to evolve from simply collecting volumes of security event and threat intelligence data to more effectively making sense of the data and using it to detect and assess incidents. Fifty-eight percent said they need better detection tools (such as static and dynamic analysis tools with cloud-based intelligence to analyze files for intent). Fifty-three percent say they need better analysis tools for turning security data into actionable intelligence. One-third (33 percent) called for better tools to baseline normal system behavior so teams can detect variances faster. Better Expertise People who took the survey admitted to a lack of knowledge of the threat landscape and security investigation skills, suggesting that even better visibility through technical integration or analytical capabilities will be inadequate if incident response teams cannot make sense of the information they see. For instance, only 45 percent of respondents consider themselves very knowledgeable about malware obfuscation techniques, and 40 percent called for more training to improve cybersecurity knowledge and skills. Automation to Enhance Action The volume of investigations, limited resources, and skills contributed to a strong desire among respondents for help incident detection and response. Forty-two percent reported that taking action to minimize the impact of an attack was one of their most time-consuming tasks. Twenty-seven percent would like better automated analytics from security intelligence tools to speed real-time comprehension; while 15 percent want automation of processes to free up staff for more important duties. Just as the medical profession must deliver heart-attack patients to the hospital within a golden hour to maximize likelihood of survival, the security industry must work towards reducing the time it takes organizations to detect and deflect attacks, before damage is inflicted. This requires that we ask and answer tough questions on what is failing us, and evolve our thinking around how we do security. Chris Young, General Manager, Intel Security The ESG believes that there is a hidden story within the Intel Security research that hints at best practices and lessons learned. This data strongly suggests that CISOs: Create a tightly-integrated enterprise security technology architecture Anchor their cybersecurity strategy with strong analytics, moving from volume to value Automate incident detection and response whenever possible Commit to continuous cybersecurity education ABOUT INTEL SECURITY McAfee is now part of Intel Security. 26 ~ Intel processor numbers are not a measure of performance. numbers differentiate features within each processor family, not across different processor families. See for details. Φ Intel QuickPath Interconnect (Intel QPI) unleashes the parallel processing performance of next-generation Intel 45nm microarchitectures. Software and workloads used in performance tests may have been optimized for performance only on Intel microprocessors. Performance tests, such as SYSmark and MobileMark, are measured using specific computer systems, components, software, operations, and functions. Any change to any of those factors may cause the results to vary. You should consult other information and performance tests to assist you in fully evaluating your contemplated purchases, including the performance of that product when combined with other products. For more information, go to 1. Intel vpro Technology requires setup and activation by a knowledgeable IT administrator. Availability of features and results will depend upon the setup and configuration of your hardware, software and IT environment. Learn more at: 2. Intel technologies may require enabled hardware, specific software, or services activation. Check with your system manufacturer or retailer. 3. Intel Wireless Display requires an Intel Wireless Display-enabled PC, tablet, or smartphone, a compatible adapter, and a TV. 1080p and Blu-ray* or other protected content playback only available on select Intel processors with built-in visuals enabled. Consult your PC manufacturer. For more information, see 4. Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) requires the use of an I2S based CODEC for operation. Intel SST cannot be used concurrently with Intel High Definition Audio. Not available on all systems. Consult your PC manufacturer for more information. Sound quality will depend on equipment and actual implementation. 5. No computer system can provide absolute security. Requires an enabled Intel processor, enabled chipset, and firmware and software optimized to use the technologies. Consult your system manufacturer and software vendor for more information. 6. Estimated based on SYSmark* 2014, a system-level performance benchmark that measures and compares PC performance using real world applications. Find out more at 7. Measured using Makerbot Desktop 3.3*. The workload file is a 2.4 MB model from the Thingiverse object database that is prepared for 3D printing. The file is exported using the "Low (Faster)" resolution option. 8. Measured using Full HD Local Video Playback Battery Rundown measured using Tears of Steel 1080p 3 Mbps H.264 video. Configuration: In the device settings, in airplane mode with wireless on. Disable Intel Display Power Saving Technology (Intel DPST), set up the system to 200 nits screen brightness using a full screen white background, and re-enable Intel DPST. Turn OFF the adaptive brightness setting under Power Options in Control Panel. Set "Dim the display" to never on both battery and AC. Set "Put the computer to sleep" to never on both battery and AC. Wait 15 minutes after boot. Launch the default video player (Windows* 8.1 Style UI video player for win), start the workload video in a loop, and disconnect the AC plug to start the test. Measure the time until battery is exhausted. 6,7,8. System Configuration Battery life and performance measurements on Intel Reference Platform. Intel Reference Platform is an example new system. Products available from systems manufacturers will not be identical in design, and performance will vary.
