A Growing Workforce Gap By 2020, there will be 650,000 job vacancies in Northern Virginia and the vast majority will require at least the Associate Degree Almost half will be in scientific and technical careers GMU Center for Regional Analysis
A Growing Workforce Gap Market Realities There are not enough students graduating from the region s colleges and universities to meet demand from Northern Virginia s employers. There will be a growing shortage of high-skill, tech-savvy frontline workers across most STEM disciplines that will become a critical choke point in the growth of many businesses.
Benefits of CPL for Growing a Strong Workforce

If yes, did your institution transfer any credit earned from the internship when they returned to campus? a) Yes and our institution did transfer credit. b) Yes but our institution did not transfer credit. c) Yes but I do not know if our institution transferred credit. d) I am not aware of any students participating in the Disney College or International Program.
Benefits of CPL for Growing a Strong Workforce Good Business Practice Relevance in Marketplace Flexibility for Students Competitive Advantage for Institution
Prior Learning Assessment vs. Credit for Prior Learning
PLA vs CPL Prior Learning Assessment Prior learning assessment (PLA) is the evaluation and assessment of an individual s life learning for college credit, certification, or advanced standing toward further education or training. Prior learning assessment is often applied to military and work experience, as well as community service, informal online learning, and other learning acquired outside traditional academic institutions. Prior learning assessment often uses evaluation of competency mastery to translate these learning experiences into college credits.
PLA vs CPL Credit for Prior Learning Credit for prior learning (CPL) is a practice used by institutions at or close to the time of a student's admission to award institutional credit for demonstrated competency mastery earned in other settings.
Barriers to and the Importance of Attainment
Audience Poll What do you see as the most significant barrier to providing credit for prior learning at your institution? a) Faculty resistance b) Accreditation issues c) Assessment and certification d) Employer acceptance e) General lack of understanding of CPL f) Transfer institutions won't accept the credit g) All of the above
Barriers to and the Importance of Attainment Barriers: Awareness Not as good attitude Cooperation across campus Importance: Awareness Just as good, or better attitude Advocacy across campus
Barriers to and the Importance of Attainment Community colleges are sometimes confronted with universities that accept Associate degree graduates as transfer students, but not their credit for prior learning even when it is an integral part of their degree program.
Audience Poll Choose the Best Answer: Universities admitting community college transfer students with credit for prior learning should. a) Accept credit for prior learning as long as it has been granted by a regionally accredited community college b) Accept credit for prior learning only when it is part of a completed Associate degree program c) Accept credit for prior learning only when its own faculty has made the assessment of prior learning d) Not accept credit for prior learning as transfer credit from any community college

How Institutions Have Successfully Implemented CPL Skilled Veterans Can t Find Jobs Military personnel develop critical cybersecurity skills needed in the workforce. Thousands graduate from military training programs in cybersecurity annually. Yet, after discharge from the military, veterans can t find jobs because they have no credential certifying their competency.
How Institutions Have Successfully Implemented CPL NOVA s Associate Degree in Cybersecurity NOVA designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance 2-Year Education by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security Associate Degree in Cybersecurity launches credit hour program Up to 23 credit hours awarded for military training in cyber security Remaining portion of degree can be completed online
How Institutions Have Successfully Implemented CPL NOVA s Associate Degree in Cybersecurity Entire degree will transfer to several NSA/DHS Center of Excellence universities Prior Learning Credit was assessed by NOVA faculty by evaluating the formal military training of USMC personnel in information technology and security assurance. 34 The Impact of CPL
The Impact of CPL CSU-Global: Alternative Credit Outcomes From start date in May 2011, 113 PLA students (320 portfolio projects completed) have passed for a total of 961 credits. From start date of April 2013 Pilot for Credit 245 students have registered for 315 course shells 82.4% have attempted an exam: 51% have passed on 1st attempt; only 3 for 2nd attempt.
The Impact of CPL CSU-Global: Alternative Credit Outcomes Student X started with CSU-Global in Sept Transferred in 55 CLEP/DSST/SL credits ($1800) Earned 22 CSU-Global CBE and PLA credits ($1350) Took standard CSU-Global courses for 43 credits ($13,545) Graduated from CSU-Global in Spring 2014 ($16,695 total cost)
The Impact of CPL CSU-Global: Final Thoughts & Tips The concept of alternative credit is an important component of successful adult degree completion. CBE creation is not easy depending on the desired outcomes. There are different options to the popular industry model of pay in advance for 6 months for as many CBE credits as you can earn in that period alternative options can effectively address the cost and time to completion and student success/graduation.
