2 Respiratory Therapists (RTs), under the direction of a physician, evaluates, treat and care for patients with breathing disorders. RTs are board certified or registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Neonatal-Pediatric Specialist (NRP) RTs are also licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice in the state of Maryland.

3 Monitor patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and consult with physicians to recommend appropriate therapy. Set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, or aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment. Explain treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.

4 Educate patients on different therapeutic modalities. Obtain and analyze blood samples to assess a patient s breathing status Maintain charts that contain patients' pertinent identification and therapy information

5 Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses, or other healthcare professionals to manage patient care by assisting with medical procedures or related duties. Inspect, clean, test, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.

6 Respiratory Therapists at AAMC are an integral part of the code blue team, Medical Emergency Response team and code pink infant abduction among other critical patient care teams. RTs provide services 24 hours/day to patients of all ages from preemies to geriatrics in the Emergency Department, Pediatric ER, NICU and CCU among other specialized treatment areas. The RT department is also home to the Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) lab and Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) lab where testing is performed to assess patients breathing function.

9 Q. What time does the Respiratory Therapy dept close? A. RT is open 24 hours/day. Q. How many therapists are scheduled per shift? A. Usually 6-8 therapists on day shift depending on workload and 4-6 therapists at night. Q. How do we know who is covering our unit? A. Call the Charge therapist at Ext 6856

10 Q. What number should a nurse call if she/he can not reach their therapist on the assigned spectralink number? A. Call the charge therapist at 6856 Q. Does Respiratory Therapy respond to Rapid Responses and Code blues? A. Yes. Respiratory therapists are part of emergency response teams

11 Q. What areas in the hospital does Respiratory Therapy cover? A. Respiratory Therapists cover all hospital grounds. Q. Does Respiratory Therapy have to take drawn blood for an arterial blood gas (ABG) back to the lab to analyze now? A. Good news! The Point of Care ABG machine is brought to the bedside.

12 Q. Does the Respiratory Therapist require a Mobilab label to draw ABG s now? With the Point of Care device, mobilab label is not needed. Q. What does a respiratory assistant do? A. RT assist helps to order equipment, cleans RT equipment, stock supplies, etc.

13 Q. What does a Charge Therapist do? Charge therapist oversees clinical matters in absentia of a respiratory care coordinator or manager. Q. When do respiratory therapist perform pulmonary function tests? A. Monday through Friday 0700 to 1530

14 Q. Does someone carry the charge therapist phone 24/7? Yes! Spectralink phone # 6856 is carried either by a charge therapist or respiratory care coordinator 24/7.
