In this issue, we bring you news on various activities that occurred at our University during the months of March and April, from IUS taking part in the Sarajevo Business Forum to visits and promotional activities both in the country and abroad. As always, we remind you that our aim at IUS is continuous improvement. We welcome your comments, suggestions and advice. So please do not hesitate to express your views at asunje@ius.edu.ba. Open Day Attracts Many High School Students More than one hundred students and their parents visited International University of Sarajevo on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 for the IUS Open Day. The event aimed at providing more information to prospective students on IUS study programs, premises and academic staff. The event began with a speech by IUS Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü at the Amphitheatre on the ground floor. Open Day lasted the entire day and attracted fourth year students from high schools from cities all over Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo, Mostar, Visoko, Travnik, Ilijas, and others. The event was organized in a way that each IUS study program had its own stand where visitors could talk to program coordinators, see program curricula or visit program laboratories. All those who were unable to visit on our Open Day are more than welcome to visit IUS on any work day from to

2 IUS Hosts Delegation From Turkey On the second and third day of their visit, trips were organized for the guests to experience the famous cultural and historical spots in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including Mostar, Blagaj, Pocitelj and Travnik. The guests, some of whom were in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time and never been to IUS, were delighted with the trip and expressed their best wishes for the future development of the International University of Sarajevo. Vice Rector Attends Day of the International University of Novi Pazar In the period from April 27th to the 29th and May 2nd to the 5th, 2011, the International University of Sarajevo had the honor to host two groups of high school directors and professors from the Republic of Turkey. During their threeday visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and under the guidance of Mr. Idris Hizir and Mr. Onur Kuskus from the IUS Istanbul Office, guests were accommodated at the Campus in Ilidža and had many interesting activities planned for them. On the invitation of the International University of Novi Pazar s Rector Prof. Dr. Mevlud Dudić, Vice Rector of the International University of Sarajevo, Assist. Prof. Dr. Senad Bušatlić, attended the annual ceremony Day of the International University of Novi Pazar on March 30, The ceremony, that also marked the ninth year since the establishment of the International University of Novi Pazar, was attended by numerous distinguished guests and representatives of other universities from the region. During the ceremony, 585 graduates of the International University of Novi Pazar received their diplomas. The International University of Sarajevo extends its congratulations on the Day of the University to the International University of Novi Pazar and wishes it lots of success in the future! Assist. Prof. Dr. Gawwad Named Regional Editor of Scholar Journal Upon their arrival to Campus, guests were greeted by the Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü, who, together with Deans As soc. Prof. Dr. Metin Boşnak, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeki Parlak, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raşit Koker and ELS Director Mrs. Hilal Karic, gave a presentation on the IUS vision, mission and study programs. The Rector and the Faculty Deans held a Q & A session to help answer any questions from the Turkish delegation. Guests were also given a tour of the Campus premises including laboratories and the Sarajevo Research Centre whose construction is almost finished. Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ragab Abdel Gawwad, coordinator of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Science s Biological Sciences and Bioengineering Program has been named Regional Editor of Scholar Journal, an online publication that provides free access to research information without financial, legal or technical barriers. The International University of Sarajevo wishes Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ragab Abdel Gawwad much success in his work.

Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu Visits IUS Bosnian Minister of Defense Visits IUS The president of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), His Excellency Mr. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, visited our Campus on Wednesday, April 6, H. E. Mr. Hisarcıklıoğlu was welcomed by the president of the Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo, Mr. Hasan Topaloğlu, as well as the IUS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü, member of the Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo, Mr. Mehmet Alacaci, and member of the IUS Board of Trustees, Mr. Sekib Avdagic, as well as by Prof. Dr. Hasan Zuhuri Sarikaya. Mr. Topaloğlu provided the distinguished guest with the essential details on the International University of Sarajevo. H. E. Mr. Hisarcıklıoğlu was also given a tour of the Campus premises in Ilidza, where he had an opportunity to see the excellent study environment - a unique setting in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. Dr. Selmo Cikotić, Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Her zegovina, paid a farewell visit to the International University of Sarajevo on Monday, April 11, During the visit, Dr. Cikotić, who is leaving his post in the Ministry, met with the Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü and Vice Rector Assist. Prof. Dr. Senad Bušatlić. Prof. Dr. Ünlü welcomed the distinguished guest in the Office of the Rectorate, providing him with a tour of the IUS Campus premises afterwards. Prof. Dr. Ünlü also used this opportunity to discuss with Dr. Cikotić the construction of the Sarajevo Research Centre, showing him the site of the future Center which is currently under development at IUS Campus. President of Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Adem Baştürk Guest at the SHOW TV On Saturday, March 26, 2011, president of the International University of Sarajevo s Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Adem Baştürk was a guest at the Turkish national channel SHOW TV. Prof. Dr. Baştürk took part in SHOW TV s University Media program hosted by Ms. Görkem İldaş where he spoke about the International University of Sarajevo and gave information on its academic staff, study programs, and courses to perspective students and their parents.

4 IUS Attends the Sarajevo Business Forum Haris Kurtagić, one of the IUS students who acted as liaison officer, described his positive experience at the Forum: During the SBF, I had an opportunity to meet many foreign investors from developed countries, and to me, as a student of economy, this experience was very important because of the valuable advice I received from them. I gained experience, knowledge and contacts and learned what investors like, so perhaps I can exhibit my project next year. Mr. Haris Kurtagić also said, I am grateful to IUS for making it possible for IUS students to attend SBF and act as the Ambassadors of the University. The second international Sarajevo Business Forum was held in the Bosnian capital from April 6th to the 8th, 2011, and gathered prominent international figures from various countries. The Forum proved to be an excellent opportunity for the International University of Sarajevo to promote its mission, vision and study programs, and for IUS students to learn more and acquire new contacts. Laboratory Practices for IUS Students in the Best Equipped Concrete Testing Lab in the Region During the Forum, whose motto was Chance for People with Ideas, IUS was provided with a stand where interested participants were able to get more information on our higher education institution as well as acquire IUS promo materials printed in three languages. Present at this stand, besides IUS Public Relations Manager, were also Assist. Prof. Amila Smajović, Assist. Prof. Lejla Miller, Senior Assistant Selvira Draganović and Senior Assistant Haris Hojkurić who devoted their time to introduce IUS to Forum participants coming from all over the world. The IUS stand received much attention with several hundred people visiting it. 24 IUS students from all three IUS Faculties (FENS, FASS and FBA) volunteered at the Forum as liaison officers. Mr. As of this spring semester, students of the course ARCH210 Structural Design II instructed by professor Haris Jašarević had the opportunity to attend new laboratory practices that include concrete w/without additives preparation, curing and strength testing. Besides providing theoretical knowledge, these practices will equip students with real-life experience necessary for a successful career after the completion of their studies. Students get their laboratory practices in the premises of BASF-Construction Chemicals Company, which owns the best equipped concrete testing laboratory in the region. The International University of Sarajevo expresses its gratitude to Ms. Nevzeta Jarović, head of BASF Construction Chemi cals Bosnia and Herzegovina, for her support in providing laboratories for IUS students, as well as planning and organizing these practices.

5 FENS Vice Dean Visits University of Illinois and Promotes IUS FENS Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koker at Conference in Latvia During the month of March, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dr. Haris Jašarević visited University of Illinois at Chicago (USA), where he met with the Head of UIC Civil and Materials Engineering Department and the President of International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure ISHMII ( Professor Farhad Ansari. Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raşit Koker participated at the Information Technologies and Management Conference (IT&M) that took place in Riga, Latvia in April, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koker presented at the Conference a study entitled Design and Implementation of an Image Processing System towards Detection and Correction of Red Eye Effect. This study was done by IUS students Abdulkadir Yilmaz and E. Rumeysa Çetiner under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koker during the Computer Vision course. As Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koker stated this is a very good example of getting undergraduate students involved in scientific activities. Dr. Jašarević discussed with Dr. Ansari with FENS s longterm goal of becoming one of Europe s leading engineering research and higher education institution, which will be achieved with a young and dynamic team of professors who earned their Ph.D. at renowned universities in the USA and Europe. They also discussed the possibility of organizing an engineering conference that would be attended by leading individuals in this area of science. During his visit Dr. Jašarević agreed on collaborating in two publications (international journal article and conference paper) to be delivered this year with UIC Distinguished Professor Alexander Chudnovsky, who has several hundred publications in international journals and conferences, and UIC CME Professor Mohsen Issa, who is member of various ACI and PCI committees and one of the leading American researchers in the field of concrete structures. The publication will deal with simulation of crack trajectories in brittle materials using a statistical fracture mechanics approach and will be compared to experimental results obtained on testing performed on sandstone disc specimens (Jasarevic and Chudnovsky 2009) and concrete specimens (Issa and Chudnovsky 2001). International University of Sarajevo is proud to announce that IUS FENS Ph.D. Candidate Mrs. Sedina Gagula will get a chance to perform a computer simulation in this project and become part of the publication team. FENS Students to Attend Prestigious Electromagnetic Conference in USA After much hard work and research that spanned the entire Fall 2010 Semester, a group of Electrical Engineering students interested in RF engineering prepared two research papers and submitted them to The 27th International Review of Progress in Applied Computational Electromagnetic (ACES 2011) that took place in Williamsburg, Virginia (USA) at the end of March It is a pleasure to inform the IUS community that both papers prepared by students Abdulkadir Yilmaz, Emine Rumeysa Çetiner, Valid Kasapović and Samir Prcanović, under the mentorship of Assist Prof. Dr. Moamer Hasanović, were accepted for the presentation at this conference. Two students from the RF group, Mr. Yilmaz and Ms. Çetiner, expressed an interest to travel to Virginia and to represent FENS at this prestigious conference. It is also our pleasure to announce that Sonnet Software Inc committed to financially support the trip of IUS students to ACES 2011 conference. We also send sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. James C. Rautio, the founder of Sonnet Software Inc, for his support and understanding.

Prof. Amila Smajović Receives ULUPUBiH Award for Textile Design VACD Students Visit Printing House Suton in Široki Brijeg On Friday, March 25, 2011 students of the course Typography II of the Visual Arts and Communications Design Program visited the Suton Printing House in Široki Brijeg. During this visit, students were introduced with the printing process starting from the graphic preparation of the material to the final product, the types of printing processes, paper, binding, etc. Having in mind that the course is attended by third and fourth year students, this experience has proven to be useful for their education and practical work in the future. Students also had an opportunity to ask questions and learn the importance of technical aspects of graphic design through practical examples in order for their work to meet the expectations of designers and clients and become successful in their future career. Students also had a chance to link theory and the principles of graphic design with the realization of these theories, as well as to learn more about the connection and cooperation of designers, printing houses and clients. The variety of papers, bindings, formats, notebooks, textbooks, and other different publications they saw in the Suton Printing House enabled students to receive valuable knowledge that they can use effectively in the future. It is with great pleasure that we announce that Assist. Prof. Amila Smajović from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, received on April 6, 2011 an Award for textile design given by the Association of Applied Artists of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ULUPUBiH). The award ceremony was held in front of numerous guests at the Gallery Collegium Artisticum in Sarajevo during the traditional exhibition of associations of artists, applied artists and architects of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This annual exhibition has been organized since 1975 on the occasion of April 6th, the Day of the City of Sarajevo. International University of Sarajevo congratulates Assist. Prof. Smajović on this Award and wishes her lots of success in her future work! Tae Kwon Do Club Holds Presentation and Training Session We are proud to announce that another student club has opened its doors to all interested individuals at IUS: thetae Kwon Do Club. In order to introduce itself to the IUS students, Tae Kwon Do Club held a presentation and training session on Wednesday, April 27th at the hallway of the main Campus building.

7 Neveser Holds Concert at IUS Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Unlu delighted the children in the school by handing them the donation of our University that consisted of gift bags, new blackboards and accompanying school materials. On Thursday, April 21, 2011the Turkish Music Society Neveser, our guests from the Republic of Turkey, held a concert at IUS for its employees, students and invited guests. The concert took place at the Amphitheater on the ground floor of the main Campus building starting at and attracted many visitors eager to enjoy a night of music and culture. The members of the group Neveser who held the concert are: Metin Dur gutlu, Mehmet Ali Dumlu, Mustafa Selcuk Eraslan, Yasir Ozcimi, Muhammet Ali Turan, Ibrahim Suat Erbay and Tuncay Tuncay. Help for Primary Cchool Pupils in Žepa Continues Continuing the efforts to help the Bosniak returnees to Eastern Bosnia, representatives of the International University of Sarajevo Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Unlu, and FENS professors Dr. Haris Jašarević and Dr. Emir Karamehmedović visited on Saturday, March 12, 2011 the small city of Žepa. During this visit, six primary school students from Žepa received their monthly scholarships financed by IUS professors Dr. Haris Jašarević, Dr. Emir Karamehmedović and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhamed Hadžiabdić, as well as by Mr. Asim Sarajlić, Mr. Sanin Hrbat and Mr. Erol Sarvan. The International University of Sarajevo expresses its satisfaction with knowing how working together can make a difference in the lives of people in need in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We also appreciate all future donations from IUS staff and students to children who returned to live in Eastern Bosnia. Senior Assistant Lamila Simišić s Project Published in Restart Project Pavillion of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the World Exhibition EXPO in Shanghai 2010 done by IUS Senior Assistant Ms. Lamila Simišić in cooperation with Mr. Miron Ibrahimpašić and Ms. Jasmina Dizdarević, was published in the book Restart: Architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina Restart is the first book of this type in the last 15 years in Bosnia and Herzegovina and represents the written evidence of what happened with the architecture and architects in this period. The book was published by the Association of Architects in Bosnia and Herzegovina and contains 115 works from different areas of architecture. These works were selected amongst 380 others by Hans Ibelings, world renowned historian, architecture critic and editor-in-chief of architecture magazine A10 New European Architecture.

8 IUS Continues Promotion Activities at Education Fairs Abroad With the aim of introducing high school students in Turkey with IUS, the biggest Foundation University in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its vision, mission, study programs, courses, academic staff, as well as information regarding enrollment, IUS Office in Istanbul participated at the Educational Fair in the Turkish capital city Ankara, as well as in Istanbul and Bursa. IUS Web Site Ranked Amongst the Top World University Sites The Fairs were organized in the period from March 17th to April 15th, 2011, during which thousands of high school students and professors visited the IUS stand. There they were greeted by the IUS representatives who answered their questions and handed promo materials.. Students of Design Studio 4 Visit Mostar Students attending the course Design Studio 4 visited Mostar, a city in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as part of their study trip on Sunday, February 27, The study trip was led by two professors from Istanbul, Turkey and two senior assistants. As part of the trip, students analyzed the historical parts of the town on both sides of the river Neretva in order to provide successful solutions for Mostar s urban revitalization. Students will use the results of this trip in their design studio throughout the semester. In the latest online issue of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the largest public research body in Spain Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) web site has been ranked amongst top world university sites. It is important to note that the IUS web site is the best ranked (6050) amongst other foundation or private universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This type of web rankings is published twice a year (January and July) since 2004, and covers more than 20,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. The aim of the project is to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities.
