NASSP This report prepared by the staff of the Student Programs Department of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
2013 National Survey of Honor Society Advisers Executive Summary A report of the major findings of the online survey of NHS and NJHS advisers conducted in the spring of [Website edition.] Compiled by David Cordts Associate Director of Honor Societies, NASSP September
Executive Summary: 2013 National Survey of Honor Society Advisers Note: [Q#] references question numbers from the original 35 question survey. Specific results for each question in the survey can be found in the full survey report. This year, 2,311 NHS and NJHS advisers responded to the annual E Survey. Started in 2002, the 2013 survey was conducted using Survey Monkey to advisers in late spring (April 1 June 30). Total respondents increased 68.4% over The results provide the national staff with important insights about the Honor Societies as they are currently operating in schools. The total number of respondents represents 9.12% of the 25,330 chapters of NHS and NJHS reported as active on [Q1]. Chapters in every state and overseas are represented in the results, although NJHS responses originate from only 47 states. Adviser demographics: 74% percent of the respondents were NHS advisers; 26% NJHS compared to the 67%/33% split among the general membership [Q3]. 24.7% were advisers completing their first year as adviser. Average experience of participants was 6.02 years. 85.3% of respondents were female [Q4]. Adviser compensation [Q6]: The average compensation (pay) recorded among the respondents was $ per year (down less than 1% from FY12). 43% of advisers responded indicating they receive no pay for their work as chapter advisers (up 3 percentage points from FY12). Of those receiving some pay for their role as advisers, the average compensation was $ (up 3% over FY12) which translates to less than $100 per month during the school year. 20.6% of respondents indicated receiving $1,000 or more per year for their work. Service Projects [Q12 Q17]: The average number of hours spent on chapter service projects by the chapters responding was just under 980 hours per chapter [Q13], based on the 2,120,680 total hours reported (an increase of average chapter hours of 4.25% over FY12). Using the federal minimum wage ($7.25) these hours translate to a value of $15,374,927 or more than $7,105 per chapter last year. Charitable Fundraising: Chapters were also asked how much money was raised this past year for charitable giving [Q14]. From the 1,395 responding chapters raising money last year, a total of $2,231,952 was raised with the average collected being $1,601 per chapter % of responding chapters indicated collecting for charity. Using these average figures we can reasonably project that chapters nationwide donated more than $24 million ($24,463,534) in cash this past year to charitable fundraisers (excluding the value of their service hours noted above). Impact: Combining the per chapter service value ($7,105) with the average charitable donation ($1,601) yields an annual average minimum contribution $8,706 per chapter to the school or community (or both). Other benefits (blood donations, food donations, clothing drives, tutoring, etc.) would add to this value as additional factors supporting the importance of maintaining an active Honor Society chapter at school. Continued.....
Benefits ratings [Qs 21 23]: A purpose of the survey is to find out how advisers feel about the benefits and services provided by NASSP. This year, the overall satisfaction rate decreased slightly by 1.2 points, with 94.6% indicating that they were Very Satisfied or Satisfied with the services received (compared with 95.8% in 2012 and up from 94.3% in 2011). Those benefits/services which received the highest ratings (based on the totals found in the top rating category) were as follows (in order of value): 1. National Web site ( 2. The annual Catalog 3. Leadership for Student Activities magazine 4. The annual School Affiliation Certificate 5. Honor Society News (e newsletter) A summary of the comments on all services is found in the extended survey report. Customer Service ratings: Among those advisers who indicated that they contacted the national office during the past year (51.8% of respondents), 94.6% rated their customer service experiences as being either Excellent or Good, up 1.0 percentage point from last year [Qs24 28]. A large number provided important evaluative comments on existing services [Q28], and they also offered many suggestions (514 or 22.2% of total respondents) for new products and services [Q29, 32.2% of respondents] which are scheduled to be shared with Sales and Marketing staff. [See Graphs & Charts along with copies of the open ended comments regarding customer service and new product suggestions that are included in the extended report.] Some additional notes: *726 topics suggestions for L4SA and HSN were submitted *344 chapters reported conducting blood drives with a total of more than 32,860 pints collected; an average of 95.5 pints per chapter. Extrapolating this data as a percentage of the national membership (20% or 3,407 NHS chapters) yields collection potential of 325,513 pints on a yearly basis. American Red Cross values each pint at $200 thus making this collection valued at more than $65 million per year. *650 chapters (28.13% of the survey respondents) reported conducting food drives, collecting a total of more than 636,000 pounds of food. The average chapter collection was 982 pounds. These figures mark the national potential where chapters could have collected nearly 7 million pounds of food in FY13. *When asked whether they invested in education through tutoring or other educational support services, 67.37% of responding chapters indicated they were engaged in this type of activity. This percentage parallels the 68.66% response from FY12. A detailed report of their projects will be forthcoming. This represents a significant contribution to the academic welfare of schools as supplements to the work of teachers and principals nationwide. Many thanks to the 2,311 advisers who took the time to respond to this year s E survey. The results provided are invaluable to the national staff. NASSP ESurvey Summary Report /dpc
Chapter Profile: 2013 This profile presents a summary of data derived from the 2013 E Survey of NHS and NJHS chapter advisers with some supplemental information from previous years. Where separate data exists for NHS v. NJHS chapters it has been noted below; otherwise data is from combined information. 1. Response rate: 2,311 reports were collected from chapters, April 1 July % were NHS advisers; 26% NJHS advisers; 3.2% advise both NHS and NJHS. This figure represents 9.12% of the 25,330 active chapters as of (17,039 NHS, 67.3%; 8,291 NJHS, 32.7%). 35 questions were asked in Average Chapter Size: Using School Size data (below) this equates to the top 7.73% of the student body. NHS chapters most frequently include members from grades 11 and 12. NJHS chapters most frequently include members from grades 7 and 8. Chapters report (Q18) an average of just more than one (1.19) dismissal per year. 3. Average School Size of reporting chapters: 787 students (2012, 767; 2011, 766) Note also that 41.7% of respondents indicated coming from Rural schools (up from 40.4% reported in 2012). This figure is close to the rural percentage of total memberships (37%). 4. Member Gender: Chapters report 63% female (63.3%); 37% male. This figure has been consistent (less than 1% point variation) for more than ten years 5. Average Service Project Hours per Chapter: (rounded to 980). 90.8% of chapters indicate completing annual service activities (a national requirement). Using federal minimum wage ($7.25) as the value per hour of service, we equate this to $7,105 per chapter. More than 2.1 million hours were reported equating to service valued at more than $15.3 million contributed (using minimum wage equivalent value). 6. Charitable Fundraising. Chapters, on average, reported raising $1,601 for charity this past year. A total exceeding $2.2 million was reported. 7. Major Charitable giving: Cancer related projects, food drives, blood drives, and Children s hospitals were top among the causes chosen by chapters. 8. Advisers: 85.3% of advisers reporting are female The vast majority (63%) are teachers from the four core disciplines (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) 24.7% of advisers were new to the role this year (first year advisers). The average adviser in the survey has been advising for 6.02 years. The average compensation reported as received by advisers was $ per year (down less than one percent from 2012) 9. Affiliation Fee: The fee to affiliate with the national office for was $85. Plans are to ask in 2014 who provides the funding for this fee at the local level. How does your chapter of NHS or NJHS compare to these findings?. Text compiled 9.13/dpc
