Today s key issues concerning product creation Complexity of products require to reuse existing product specifications Today: most common approach is to use a template based way Question: how good can we reuse existing specifications? Answer (assumption): this depends on the level of modelling applied to the product specs End users feel hijacked by SW vendors Deployment of or a change to a specific SW technology is very expensive Examples: CAD: current hype in Automotive to move to CATIA V5 Implementation of a PDM strategy need to find an approach to become increasingly independent of a specific system vendor This is also a question of Standards (of course) Slide 6

The role of standardization in IT / SW development Different views on application of standards Why standardisation needs research End-User Standards don t work Standards are outdated when they appear But: Everybody agrees that working standards would really save money AND they are really beneficial! System Vendor You don t need standards use my systems only I ll write you interfaces to every system you need So: We need standards that: Work seamless are independent from specific technology Provide technological advance System Integrator Research for Standardisation Slide 8

Scope of Knowledge Based Engineering Knowledge based engineering (KBE) Core aim of traditional KBE: Give the designer a more convenient way of generating shape/ geometry Automatic sketching Ambient Inlet Fan Splitter Compressor Map Pressure Ratio Corrected Flow Configuration Definition/Flowpath System Oriented Layout with Integrated Parametric Design Geometry (SOLID) Morphing Burner HPC HPT LPT Fuel HPShaft LPShaft 0-D Engine Object Model Mixer Nozzle 1D Pitchline Blade- Row Analysis Variable Fidelity Zooming 3D Aero, Aeromechanical & Mechanical Analysis Examples: CATIA Knowledgeware UGS Knowledge Fusion KTI ICAD Design templates in CATIA V5 Extended view: Capturing of design knowledge and intent Maintain relations between different product model representations Slide 9

Motivation to support better abstraction methods in product design CAD still is the most important method for product development Compared to Software development, CAD is the programming / coding part of product design Learning from Software development: We need more modeling than coding Specification should turn from being used as a documentation means to a more integrated part in the development Slide 10

Problem statement for KBE interoperability Looking from Model Driven Development perspective, today s product development is carried out on PSM-level. Vision of Model Driven Product Creation (MDPC): Need suitable abstraction methods to describe PIM-level Mission: Adoption of MDA to product development Keep the link between conceptual and detailed design Utilisation of metamodels to create new designs Metamodels should enable end-users to become more independent from IT providers (CAD, CAE,...) Slide 11

ivip Concept of Function Oriented Design (FOD) Management of relations over different partial models Model overspanning constraint management FOD - Partial models Parametrics source: ivip References References CORBA CORBA CAD-Services Category1 Req. 1 Req. 2 Category 2 Req. 4 Req. 5 Requirements model Functional model Part-/ Productstructure model CAD-Modell / Assembly Slide 12

Possible approach to PIM-level product design: FOD Function oriented design (FOD) to abstract from CAD model source: ivip Requirements Editor Function Editor Structure Editor Constraint Manager CAD- Systems PDM- Server 1 PDM- Server 2 ivip- ivip- Client Client PDM Enablers Pro/ Engineer AutoCAD CADdy ++ CAD Services ivip Integration Platform Slide 13

FOD product requirements modelling approach source: ivip FOD allows hierarchical definition and mathematical representation of requirements through parameters Interdependencies between requirements are forming a constraint system Slide 14

FOD Functional models Graph representation of functional entities Nodes define functions Edges define linkage of parameters Definition of functions through In-/Outparameters Linking between functions to define interdependencies Constraints in functional models form a separate constraint system source: ivip Slide 15

FOD Constraint Manager to track dependencies source: ivip Tracking interdependencies between Partial models: Requirements description (hierarchical) Functional model (graph rep.) Product structure (link to CAD assembly / PDM) Each partial model maintains own constraint system Slide 16

FOD CAD and PDM Interface FOD-Client FOD-Client CAD-services source: ivip Product ProductStructure PDM-Enablers PDM-Server PDM-Enablers Slide 17

Deficiencies of current implementation of FOD Proprietary representation of models SysML would give a more standardized framework CAD Interfacing based on CORBA provide other messaging methods J2EE, Web Services etc. Interfacing to other systems Requirements modeling Systems engineering / CAE tools Slide 18

Requirements for KBE Interoperability Identification or new development of a formal description of the abstract product models Product Requirements Functional decomposition Product Structure BOM Common Language for abstract product specification: SysML (OMG Systems modeling language) being a potential candidate Modellica Connection and interlinking with product development process Interfacing with existing systems (PDM / PLM, CAE, DMU, KBE...) Alignment with STEP models More requirement TBC... Slide 19

Benefits of a KBE interface standard Benefits Long-term knowledge storage and retrieval Vendors: increased market acceptance (especially small enterprises) Adding formalism to an informal process improves the design process Easier reuse of existing design solutions Independency from specific vendors Ability to chose software application by functionality ( best in class ) Slide 20

Current activities in OMG s ManTIS DTF ManTIS (Manufacturing Technologies and Industrial Systems Domain Task Force of the OMG) working areas: Standards and interface specification in the manufacturing area Examples: CAD Services PDM Enablers PLM Services Distributed Simulation... Most recent: KBE interface standardization Slide 21

Requirements of the current KBE RFP Proposals shall provide a Platform Independent Model (PIM) and at least one Platform Specific Model (PSM). The PIM shall be described in UML. The PSM shall support XML. Submitters shall provide artifact (or design object) interface functionality that provides: Features Geometry Constraints Function Submitters shall provide a format and syntax for Rules. Submitters shall define mechanisms to reveal relationships between artifacts. Submitters shall define a taxonomy of functions. Slide 22

KBE i/op. from PLM viewpoint Core PLM scope: The management of knowledge about a product in terms of: Requirements Design intent Development processes PLM is about management of Metainformation of a product Key PLM issue: Integration of the tools and databases used throughout the whole product development process KBE is a crucial part to generate the product knowledge, hence needs integration into PLM world Slide 23

ManTIS KBE Standardization initiative RFP on KBE interfaces was drafted and issued in 2004 KBE Information Day conducted at the last OMG meeting in San Francisco (Feb. 2005) Presentations from both end-user and vendor side: NASA, Boeing, John Deere, Fiper, Imaginestics Conclusion: Need to put KBE in the context of PLM Need to reconcile with SysML specification KBE Interface spec is ongoing activity Still soliciting interested vendors and users Continuation of discussion in Athens, April 12, See: Slide 24

Thank you! Questions? Slide 25

Rechartering of OMG s Manufacturing DTF to ManTIS DTF The new DTF is called Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems DTF ManTIS Charter (dtc/ ): The mission of the Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems Domain Task Force, ManTIS DTF, is to foster the emergence of cost effective, timely, commercially available and interoperable software components for the Manufacturing and Industrial Systems domain through the development of standard interfaces using the OMG process. The ManTIS DTF will issue specifications in the following industrial sectors: Manufacturing Industrial Processes Control Systems Slide 26

ManTIS Charter cont. Objectives: Recommend technology specifications based on OMG s Model Driven Architecture (MDA) that enable interoperability, reusability and modularity. Encourage development of standard interfaces that encapsulate legacy systems, enabling their integration and easing migration to new technologies. Encourage adoption of ManTIS-related OMG specifications by other standardization organizations Establish a working relationship with other Task Forces in both Platform and Domain Technology Committees of the OMG to provide mutual support and leverage for each other s specifications. Establish and maintain active liaison relationships with appropriate external organizations in support of the preceding goals. Encourage everyone to participate Slide 27
