2 Database Design 1 UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS LOWELL College of Health Sciences Syllabus Healthcare Database Design Spring 2014 Instructor: Rose Candelieri, MS, RD Rose_Candelieri@uml.edu Class Meetings (6): Wednesday 5:30 pm-8:30 pm (see attached schedule) Online Classes (8): Wednesday 7:30 9:00 pm (see attached schedule) Class Meeting Location: Yankee Alliance Offices 138 River Road, Andover, MA Pre-requisites: None - Open to all students who have a minimum of a bachelor s degree Class Hours: 3 Semester Hours Course Description This course is a practical approach to the design, and development of a relational database with an emphasis on healthcare. Analyzing the requirements of the database will proceed to the design of the structure of the relational database, which will then be developed in a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Microsoft will be used as the RDBMS platform. Course Objectives At the completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand the major DBMS models and systems. 2. Analyze and design a database system 3. Understand relationships
3 Database Design 2 4. Develop a relational database system 5. Understand the concepts of database administration. Course Format This course is taught in a blended format. This means that there will be a combination of face-to-face classroom meetings and on-line/audio chat classes. On-Line Portion of the Blended Class Format Course materials will be made available each week on Friday morning. You are required to read the assigned text book chapters, view the videos, and perform activities and assignments. How to Communicate in a Blended Format Face to Face Meetings: There will be 6 traditional face-to-face classroom meetings. It is expected that you attend all meetings. If, due to extenuating circumstances, you are unable to make a face-to-face meeting, contact me prior to class to discuss an alternative assignment. Failure to contact me will result in a 5 point deduction from your average grade. Discussion Board: This is an online location where students and instructors interact with comments and questions. Each week one or more discussion boards will be started. The discussion boards are open to all students for comments and questions. I will review the discussion board(s) on a daily basis and respond to questions/comments when appropriate. A discussion board format has the benefit of allowing everyone in the class to benefit from the exchange. If one student has a question or concern, chances are, others do as well. In addition, discussion threads remain available throughout the entire course. On occasion, when you feel the discussion should be more private in nature, please feel free to me using the online course system. I will check my daily and respond to you within 24 hours. Audio-Chat: In weeks where there is no face to face class, there will be a scheduled audio chat. These chats are scheduled on Wednesday s from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. This time will be used to review weekly material and to clarify any issues or problems that students may be having. This allows the opportunity for everyone in the class to interact at the same time and have live discussion. Although, it is not required you participate in the weekly audio chat during the scheduled time-frame, it is encouraged as it is a way to interact with others in the class. Should you not participate it is expected that you will listen to the recorded session.

Other Requirements: To participate in the Audio Chat you will need headphones with a microphone. A USB headset is recommended, but the two jack audio headsets will also work. If the University has not closed, but I deem it to be hazardous for students to travel, I will post both an announcement and on the course website and everyone at their student address.
