2 OUR MISSION The African School of Economics aims to promote cutting-edge economic research, innovative public policy and to contribute to the emergence of worldclass social scientists and business in Africa. To that end, ASE has designed an innovative curriculum and has set-up teaching and exchange partnerships with more than a dozen top universities from around the world. OUR HISTORY ASE is a continuation of the success of the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE) founded by Professor Léonard Wantchekon in 2004 in Cotonou, Benin. IERPE is a nonprofit training and research initiative in Political Economy and Applied Statistics that has provided expertise in public policy and has trained executives for the public and private sector in West Africa. Since its inception, the Institute expanded its activities to include a successful Master in Public Economics and Applied Statistics (MEPSA). The MEPSA has had seventy-four African graduates, all of whom are in high demand in the West African region: more than 75% of the graduates of the cohorts are employed in research centers throughout West Africa, in the World Bank and in different governments. The MEPSA program is accredited by the Ministry of Education in Benin. LOCATION The Founder Dr. Léonard Wantchekon is a Professor in the Politics department and associated faculty in the Economics department at Princeton University. Prior to joining Princeton University, he taught at New York University ( ), and Yale University ( ). He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University (1995) and his M.A. in Economics from Laval University and University of British Columbia (1992). Professor Wantchekon is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Executive Committee of the Council for International Teaching and Research at Princeton. ASE is headquartered in Abomey-Calavi (Cotonou)

3 COURSES OFFERED ASE will offer a wide range of graduate degrees in Business Administration, Public and International Affairs, Quantitative Methods and Economics, and Development Studies, as well as executive degree programs. ASE s programs have two main distinctive features: a strong training in quantitative and qualitative research methods; and a significant exposure to the Economic History of Africa. Graduate Programs Starting year - Master in Business Administration (MBA) Executive MBA Program (EMBA) Master in Mathematics, Economics and Statistics (MMES) Master in Public Administration (MPA) Executive MPA Program (EMPA) Master in Development Studies (MDS) Ph.D. in Economics 2016 Executive Programs - Certificate in Quantitative Finance Certificate in Impact Evaluation 2015 Academic Requirements ASE curriculum is international in scope and based on foundational training in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics and History. Full-time Master s degrees are offered in a two-year time frame and the part-time degrees (to be launched) in a three-year time frame, although longer time frames are being considered. The Ph.D. program will be covered in 5 years, with two years of course work and 3 years devoted to dissertation writing. Executive programs are 3 months long and taught in French.

4 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ASE offers a variety of internal scholarship opportunities to students, including partial-tuition awards and stipends to help pay living expenses. All admitted students are automatically considered for merit scholarships and the work-study program. The registrar office also periodically advertises external open calls available to West African Students who wish to pursue a Master s Degree. 5 RESEARCH The African School of Economics will host three major research centers: The Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE) The Institute for African Studies (IAS) The Institute for Finance and Management (IFM) ASE will also host an analytical social history center, the Museum for Social Discovery. Each institute will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to actively participate in research projects sponsored by government agencies, international organizations and private corporations. The sponsored projects will provide on campus employment to students and financial resources for faculty research and teaching as well as cultural activities. More importantly, the institutes will be the channel through which ASE engages policy-makers, private entrepreneurs and development agencies. ASE Working Paper Series Launched in July 2015, this peer reviewed online publication aims to disseminate preliminary results of ongoing research projects carried out by ASE s scholar community ( ASE in FIGURES A total of 95 students enrolled at ASE (71 MMES program, 24 MBA) for the academic year , coming from 15 different countries
