Fall 2014 Dear Students and Prospective Carpenter Community Nursing Fellows, Nurses must create, serve in, and disseminate re-conceptualized roles to bridge whatever gaps remain between coverage and access to care. More must become health coaches, care coordinators, informaticians, primary care providers, and health team leaders in a greater variety of settings, including primary care medical homes and accountable care organizations. The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010) With the release of the Institute of Medicine report on the Future of Nursing, which advocates for an expanded role of nursing in our healthcare system, the National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC) and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation have partnered to offer an innovative and exciting competitive Fellowship opportunity for nursing students and recent graduates which focuses on the recommendations in the report. Along with a scholarship of $2,000, the competitive Fellowship provides current and recently graduated nursing students the education, leadership training, and mentoring opportunities that help build the skills necessary to assume a greater role in community-based care and become leaders in transforming the nursing field. The Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship will introduce Fellows to the diverse world of public health nursing and the career opportunities available for them in the ever-expanding field of community-based care which includes nurse-managed and retail health clinics. The curriculum will share with Fellows the best practices of current leaders, technical instruction, and important policy shaping healthcare initiatives, while the site visits will provide opportunities to interact with current nursing professionals and experience the innovative ideas that are changing the face of healthcare. As part of this experience, participants will have the chance to network with nurse leaders, policy makers, NNCC staff, members of nurse-managed health clinics, nurse leaders in retail health clinics, and many more. Fellows will also be able to customize their program so that their activities correspond to their interests and future career goals. With the knowledge that every Fellow will build a solid understanding of these current trends and the skills necessary to assume a leadership role in the healthcare workforce of the future, we invite you to apply for the Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship at by January 19, Please see the attached application materials. Yours, Tine Hansen-Turton, MGA, JD, FAAN, FCPP CEO

Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship Not all nurses begin their career with thoughts of becoming a leader. Yet strong leadership will be required to transform the U.S. health care system. A transformed system will need nurses with the adaptive capacity to take on re-conceptualized roles in new settings, educating and reeducating themselves along the way indispensable characteristics of effective leadership. The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010). The Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship provides an introductory and competitive fellowship program in community-based and public health nursing for current and recently graduated nursing students of all levels. The program will: Introduce Fellows to newly emerging nursing career opportunities; Develop Fellows leadership skills; and Provide Fellows mentors to support their future career path. The National Nursing Centers Consortium s mission is to advance nurse-led health care through policy, consultation, programs and applied research to reduce health disparities and meet people s primary care and wellness needs. Ensuring a well-prepared workforce of nurses with the skills needed to play increasingly central role in leading interdisciplinary health care teams is central to our mission. The Fellowship program is supported by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Mrs. Leona B. Carpenter dedicated her life to the field of public health nursing and nurse education and the Foundation continues to provide financial support for community health nursing projects in the communities of Worcester, Massachusetts; Richmond, Virginia; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that support her vision. GOALS & OBJECTIVES The program s goals are to: (1) Increase the competency of the students to function in a leadership role, (2) Encourage more nurses to pursue careers in community-based settings, and (3) Create a model for integrating education and training on community-based primary care into nursing curricula that can be replicated and expanded.

At the end of this semester-long program, Fellows will have a better understanding of the career opportunities available for nurses that are outside traditional settings, a mentoring relationship with someone currently working in the field, and an increased sense of their own potential and leadership competence in a workplace setting. STRUCTURE The Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship program will take place outside traditional learning facilities, allowing Fellows to engage actively with nursing leaders in a real-world setting. This self-directed learning experience allows for a degree of flexibility in order to adapt to the changing demands of work, school, home, and life events. The Fellowship demands a high degree of personal responsibility in order to complete the assignments COHORTS The Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship program will include students and recent graduates from Philadelphia-area nursing programs and provide them with readings and in-person opportunities to learn about possible clinical and administrative careers as well as opportunities for leadership in the rapidly expanding nursing field. Potential Fellows will complete an application that includes a short essay and at least one academic reference. A link to the application can be found at MENTORING Fellows will have the opportunity to be mentored by existing nurse leaders and other leaders in the field of public health. Mentors come from diverse backgrounds and are an invaluable asset to the development of well-rounded leaders. NETWORKING Fellows will have the opportunity to network with NNCC national membership of nurse leaders at the kickoff event, in-person meetings, and at NNCC sponsored events during and after the Fellowship. REQUIRED READINGS NNCC will provide all reading materials, either electronically or in print, which the Fellow can keep at the end of the program. Fellows will post their responses to a group discussion board and provide feedback to their cohorts in order to facilitate a positive learning experience.

SCHOLARSHIP Fellows will receive a scholarship of $2000 to cover cost of participation in the program to be paid in two installments; at the beginning and end of the Fellowship. PARTICIPATION/ATTENDANCE The Carpenter Community Nursing Fellowship Program will operate as follows: Kick-off event, which will include a remarks from Tine Hansen-Turton, CEO of the National Nursing Centers Consortium, mentors, Fellows, and other invited guests Required weekly readings focused on community nursing and responses based on prompts from mentors or NNCC staff At least Two (2) meetings with a Fellowship mentor Three (3) one-day visits of Student Fellows to different community health settings, such as a nursemanaged health center, a convenient care clinic, and a community-based home visit program One (1) one-day site visit to NNCC to discuss leadership, policy, and the business side of nursemanaged care Participation in a Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal event. Participation in NNCC sponsored events, highlighting leadership in nursing Submission of a brief final response paper summarizing the Fellow s experience, lessons learned, and future career plans, if known Completion of pre and post Fellowship questionnaires Fellows are expected to participate in all activities listed. Reading responses (500 words or less) should be completed and uploaded to the discussion boards by 9:00am on the assigned date. SCHEDULE The Fellowship will begin in February 2015 and run through June A final schedule will be announced at the beginning of the Fellowship.

CONTACT For any additional questions, concerns, or information please contact Laura Wesolowski at or The changing landscape of the health care system and the changing profile of the population require that the system undergo a fundamental shift to provide patient centered care; deliver more primary as opposed to specialty care; deliver more care in the community rather than the acute care setting; provide seamless care; enable all health professionals to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and competencies; and foster interprofessional collaboration. The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010).
