DePaul University announces a search for the Dean of its College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. DePaul University Founded in 1898, DePaul is the largest Catholic university and the 12 th largest private, not-for-profit University in the nation, serving over 23,500 students. The University offers nearly 300 graduate and undergraduate programs, awards nearly 7,000 degrees annually, and is deeply involved with Chicago, the third largest city in the U.S. Chicago is an important asset to DePaul, and is central to facilitating the University s community engagement mission from the incredible opportunities the city affords for exploration, for civic and artistic involvement, and for internships. With an abiding commitment to diversity and inclusivity, DePaul welcomes all people and all faiths and creeds. Drawn from the heritage of St. Vincent de Paul, DePaul s mission of social justice and service to the poor is manifested today as a special concern for educating first-generation and traditionally underserved students. Approximately 100 of DePaul s programs are in graduate and doctoral studies, and more than 88% of the faculty hold terminal degrees. In addition to the iconic 40-acre main campus in the heart of Lincoln Park and the Loop campus downtown, the University has multiple international locations. In 2015, the annual budget is $550.6 million. The University consists of 10 schools and colleges (Business, Communication, Computing and Digital Media, Education, Law, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Music, New Learning, Science and Health, and Theatre). In addition to scholarly inquiry, creative force, and intellectual efforts, the faculty works to realize each student s potential and to recognize the God-given dignity of each person. 2

Named after St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th century French priest who devoted his life to serving and caring for others, DePaul has a commitment to serving first-generation and low-income students. Currently, first-generation students represent 33 percent of the freshmen class. The Vincentian mission to serve the public good and give people of all ethnicities and backgrounds the opportunity to receive a college education remains at the heart of the institution. DePaul recently became the nation s leader among private, nonprofit universities for the number of students who annually transfer here from two-year colleges. The 4

University is among the first Catholic institutions to admit women and members of other faiths. DePaul pursues the preservation, enrichment and transmission of knowledge and culture across a broad scope of academic disciplines. It treasures its deep roots in the wisdom nourished in Catholic universities from medieval times. The principal distinguishing marks of the University are its Catholic, Vincentian, and urban character. In American Catholic higher education, DePaul is considered a model for suffusing the organizational culture with the mission of the institution. The legacy of Saint Vincent de Paul serves as an inspiration for all aspects of the University, to learn through service, absorb knowledge and then go out into the world and make a difference. The Campuses When the Vincentians first established the University, the school had a small, fiveacre presence in a single building in Lincoln Park. Today, the Lincoln Park Campus sits on 40 acres. Approximately 3,000 students live on this campus, which is home to the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Science and Health, the College of Education, the School of Music, The Theatre School, the DePaul Art Museum and the John T. Richardson Library. The University first gained its Chicago Loop presence in 1912 with the acquisition of the Law School and the College of Commerce. With Chicago s financial district, Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony and major media outlets only steps away, the Loop Campus is home to the colleges of Business, Communication, Computing and Digital Media, Law and the School for New Learning as well as several LAS graduate programs. 5

Completed Campaign: Many Dreams, One Mission In 2014, DePaul concluded its Many Dreams, One Mission campaign and surpassed its $250 million goal by raising more than $325 million. The campaign s purpose was to increase student financial assistance, invest in areas of academic excellence, help recruit and retain top faculty, develop programs and campus facilities that serve and improve communities and strengthen DePaul s Vincentian Catholic values. The cornerstone of the campaign was $100 million in new scholarships. The campaign continues to pursue resources in key strategic areas. Strategic Plan: Vision 2018 The University s current strategic plan, Vision 2018, has five major goals: 1) enhance academic quality and support educational innovation; 2) deepen the university s distinctive connection to the global city of Chicago; 3) strengthen DePaul s Catholic and Vincentian identity; 4) foster diversity and inclusion; and 5) assure a business model that builds the university s continued strength and educational excellence. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (LAS), the founding college at DePaul, brings the University s heritage and mission to the modern student experience. Approximately 30 percent of the annual credit hours generated by the University are taught in LAS. There are 30 departments and interdisciplinary programs in the college, including 9 graduate-only programs. Courses meet during the day, evenings, and on weekends. LAS is the largest and most varied college at DePaul University. The College is committed to providing students with a stimulating and meaningful education that balances indepth study with a breadth of experience in the various disciplines that form the core of human knowledge, through robust humanities, social science, and studio arts programs. 6

The College of LAS is home to DePaul s general education program, known as the Liberal Studies Program, and the University Honors Program and is defined by a vibrant and diverse academic community. It is known for offering unique emphasis on interdisciplinary programs and centers, strong service-oriented mission, commitment to scholarship, focus on teaching and small class sizes. LAS Snapshot 230 full-time, tenured and tenure track faculty: -65 Full Professors -126 Associate Professors -39 Assistant Professors 46 full-time, non tenure track faculty 82 full time professional and non-exempt staff 2,441 full- and part-time undergraduate majors 811 graduate students $49.5M approximate College operating budget LAS values and nurtures the urban and Vincentian mission of DePaul. The interactions among its faculty and between its faculty and students are characterized by personalism. Significant portions of the curriculum speak to questions of social responsibility, ethical standards for behavior, and an active engagement of the Chicago community. All students are encouraged to participate in research, service learning, study abroad and internship opportunities. This commitment to liberal education is further reflected in a faculty that is as strongly dedicated to teaching as it is to research; in curricular practices that discourage students from concentrating in one subject area to the exclusion of all others; and in the college's encouragement of collaborative and interdisciplinary areas of study. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences offers extensive advising, content area tutoring, technological resources, and workshops to assist students. The College has an external advisory board that provides guidance on academic planning and overall mission. The Board is comprised of financial, business and cultural leaders. 7

LAS Departments Information about all of the LAS Departments is available at this webpage: African and Black Diaspora American Studies Anthropology Arabic Studies Art, Media & Design Catholic Studies Chinese Studies Economics English French Geography German History History of Art and Architecture International Studies Islamic World Studies Italian Japanese Studies Latin American and Latino Studies Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies Philosophy Political Science Public Health Public Policy Refugee and Forced Migration Studies Religious Studies School of Public Service Social Work Sociology Spanish Sustainable Urban Development Women s and Gender Studies Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse Graduate Programs The graduate division of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences offers an array of scholarly and professional programs. These programs prepare students to be leaders in their profession and to promote social justice in Chicago. The College offers 30 masters-level degree programs and 11 graduate certificates including the: Master of Arts (MA) Master of Nonprofit Leadership (MNM) Master of Public Administration (MPA) Master of Public Health (MPH) Master of Science (MS) Master of Social Work (MSW Several of these, including the MPA, MPH, and MSW maintain accreditation through their respective professional organization. 8

The internationally recognized Department of Philosophy offers a doctoral degree, and many of the master's programs have earned distinguished reputations both nationally and in the Chicago area for the unique niches that they fill. LAS Centers and Institutes Information about all of the LAS Centers and Institutes are available at this webpage: Center for Black Diaspora Center for Community Health Equity Center for Latino Research Center for Religion, Culture and Community Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development DePaul Humanities Center Institute of Business and Professional Ethics Social Science Research Center The Women's Center Liberal Studies Program The Liberal Studies Program (LSP) is the core curriculum taken by the majority of DePaul s undergraduate students. The program is designed to develop students' writing abilities, computational proficiencies, and critical and creative thinking skills. The program includes an innovative Chicago Quarter that introduces students to the city at the beginning of their undergraduate experience, and a Focal Point seminar that offers students a small class room experience in their first year. Some of the liberal studies courses highlight the institution's unique mission and identity, and include a number of opportunities for community service. The Liberal Studies program is organized around six key learning domains: 1) Arts and Literature, 2) Philosophical Inquiry, 3) Religious Dimensions, 4) Scientific Inquiry, 5) Self, Society and the Modern World, and 6) Understanding the Past. While the program draws faculty from around the University, the vast majority of courses are taught by faculty in the College of LAS. The participation of students and faculty in the LSP program contributes to a strong sense of intellectual community at DePaul, and a shared commitment to its mission and values. The following link provides additional information 9

University Honors Program The University Honors Program is also housed in the College of LAS, and offers a challenging alternative to the LSP program for well-prepared and motivated students. The Honors Program provides small seminar style classes taught by faculty committed to academic excellence. The general education requirements for the program are thematically similar to the LSP program. The rich academic experience offered by the Honors Program seeks to broaden students' perspectives, foster critical thinking, and encourage self-reflection. The program also emphasizes participatory learning, an examination of values, and interdisciplinary and crosscultural studies. Like the LSP program, the University Honors Program draws students from throughout the University, although LAS faculty teaches the majority of its courses. Information on the University Honors Program can be obtained through the following link: Faculty Scholarship, Research and Creative Activities The faculty and students in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences form a community of scholars, actively engaged in research, scholarship, and creative work. In 2014, LAS faculty produced 131 journal articles, 47 books, 103 chapters, 48 creative works, and 453 paper presentations. The college supports faculty and student research through several programs and initiatives. The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences The successful candidate will have a demonstrated involvement with liberal arts education and the ability to articulate a vision for its enduring value in the 21 st century. The candidate will engage a variety of external audiences (media, alumni, professional groups, and peer institutions) while also working effectively within the University administration and demonstrating a commitment to shared governance. As the University continues its review of the core curriculum (the Liberal Studies Program), the Dean will play an important role in this discussion. The Dean will oversee 30 departments and interdisciplinary programs and 10 centers. LAS has over 100 major and minor programs of study, including over 25 graduate programs at the master s level and a Ph.D. program in continental philosophy widely considered among the nation s top programs in the field. Desired Characteristics for the Dean of LAS The requirements for the position include a terminal degree, significant senior leadership experience in higher education, and a notable record of scholarly contributions and teaching. The Dean is expected to play an important role in fundraising and development, an expectation greatly facilitated by an extensive alumni network and DePaul s location in a premier international city. The institution seeks a leader who will protect and encourage DePaul s 10

innovative character. The Dean of LAS must deeply respect the institution s Catholic, Vincentian and urban identity, and carry out its mission and values. Dedicated to students and student success, the Dean will strengthen academic quality, teaching excellence, scholarly research, service, and diversity. Above all, the Dean must be a person of integrity whose personal interactions embody respect for and appreciation of the dignity and worth of all individuals.
