Physical Security and Technology A Service User Perspective Abdi Hussein and Alex Sunyata Service User Experts

Physical Security Making sure that the site is safe and well protected Ensuring that the infrastructure within the site is in good condition and does it s service which is to protect and keep everybody safe; including staff, patients and visitors Involves a lot of awareness and observation -daily investigation, nothing is taken for granted and everything is documented

Physical Security: The impact on service users The pros and cons... The pros... It is reassuring that the building is protected from outside; the general public, victim s families and the media- it is reassuring that all visitors have to be approved Helps prevent: absconcion, patients from worrying for their safety, incidents involving staff, service users and the general public Good security could mean low turn over of the staff because they feel safe If some patients are threatened on the ward, they receive the presence and support of staff and feel secure

Physical Security: The impact on service users The pros and cons... The cons... Your freedom of expression is limited and sometimes something you say may be misinterpreted as risky Loss of dignity when being observed You feel embarrassed when you are escorted in the community by staff wearing Hospital Badges Service users feel less attached to the outside world with their families and friends and they may lose their social skills Doctors decide when we can go out and we may feel powerless and trapped Service users don t always know the physical security procedures to follow if they feel threatened on the ward

Physical Security: Technology Technology is playing an increasingly important part in patient's everyday lives as is true for everyone. Items like mobile phones, laptops, USBs, Kindles, Consoles and anything internet capable and so on have such potential to be misused that they're commonly banned items. This ban for the many to make safe the few has a big impact on service users Do we hide technology form service users of embrace it while managing the risk?

Access to Technology Varying amounts of access to different types of technology across services: Internet Use: Some allow closely supervised internet access but many websites are blocked Some allow free access but the usage is monitored Some only have limited use e.g. Only able to within IT room Mobile phones: Some units allow service users to have mobile phones when on leave Some limited to fixed mobile phones provided by the service

Lack of Knowledge Service users who have not lived in the community for some time may have limited knowledge about many different kinds technology Most service users are technologically phobic and panic at the thought of using the internet fear of the unknown Limited knowledge of staff means they can either overestimate or underestimate technology's potential to be abused: this can cause tighter restriction to service user access to technology or create potential risks for the service, service users and the public

Need for Education Facebook, Twitter, , electronic banking etc - service users will be able to access these in the community Need education to know how to use techonolgy safely when back in the community Need to educate about the potential risks and vulnerability for service users not just focus on risk for staff and the public Education and experience in using technology safely will: reduce fear of the unknown help service users rehabilitation back into the community essential for factors which prevent relapse such as employment and socialising

Positive Risk Taking? If we are too risk averse we do not know service user s potential to abuse technology- for example would it be better to give service users more free access in the classroom to assess their abilities and closely monitor their usage? Have to think how they could abuse technology out in the community. The services and the service users need to be prepared We need to try to find the balance of getting service users technologically back to speed which is good for their rehab whilst keeping service users and others safe
