UMUC seeks an innovative and agile fundraising leader to serve as the Associate Vice President for Development (AVP). As a front-line fundraiser and advocate for the College, the AVP will play a critical role in the advancement of its philanthropic goals and, thereby, UMUC s mission to provide top-quality educational opportunities that are respected, affordable, and accessible. The AVP will provide dynamic leadership and direction for the major and annual giving programs. Working in close collaboration with and reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, he or she will guide and oversee all aspects of corporate, foundation, and individual major and annual giving. Recognizing UMUC s unique and leading-edge role in the field of higher education, the AVP will proactively identify new prospects to expand and further diversity the College s donor base. Leading by example, the AVP will effectively build and manage a portfolio of alumni, friends, families, organizations, and corporations; he or she will create inventive engagement, cultivation, and stewardship strategies designed to further the loyalty and engagement of the community to encourage higher levels of support and involvement. The selected candidate will bring a solid track record of increasing and diversifying philanthropic support from both defined and non-defined constituencies. With a creative, energetic approach to fundraising and constituent engagement, the AVP will help foster an atmosphere charged with enthusiasm and dynamism for institutional goals. Consequently, the ideal candidate will bring the stature, professional confidence, and proven ability to engage, motivate, and develop productive relationships with diverse leaders and volunteers, faculty, donors, prospects, staff, and other internal and external constituencies. Excellent communication, writing, and listening skills, as well as intellectual curiosity and dexterity, are requisite. 3 UMUC AT A GLANCE UMUC is a USM institution with a significant national profile In fiscal year (FY) 2009*, UMUC's worldwide enrollment ranked first among four-year degree granting public universities in the U.S. In 2012, it had over 96,000 students enrolled around the world. The number of stateside students has more than doubled in the last 10 years, increasing to more than 39,500 stateside students in Fall The Board of Regents projects that UMUC's enrollments will grow by 47- percent in UMUC is a world leader in online education In FY 2011, UMUC had more than 234,000 online course enrollments. Currently, UMUC offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs fully online. In FY 2011, UMUC offered 836 distinct courses online. UMUC was winner of the highest honor in Web education, the "Sloan Consortium Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Asynchronous Learning Network Programming". UMUC is a Maryland institution addressing Maryland's needs In FY 2011, UMUC served nearly 35,000 Marylanders. As of FY 2011, UMUC offered on-site instruction at 20 classroom locations throughout Maryland. Maryland residents represented 63-percent of UMUC's Fall 2010 stateside course enrollments. As of FY 2011, UMUC has alliances with all 16 Maryland Community Colleges, which includes 351 articulated programs. In Fall 2011, UMUC has enrolled more than 300 students in the undergraduate and graduate Cyber-security programs. UMUC is a global institution UMUC's overseas divisions offered on-site classes in more than 25 countries and territories, enrolling 36,078 individual students in undergraduate and graduate programs in Asia and Europe in FY UMUC received three IMS Global Learning Consortium awards: Learning Impact Award; Best in Category, Faculty Development Network for the UMUC faculty e-zine; and Best in Category, Online Laboratory for UMUC's online hands-on labs in information assurance (2010). UMUC provides access to higher education for minority students In Fall 2010, 35-percent of UMUC's stateside students were African Americans; minority students comprised 44-percent of the total enrollment UMUC enrolls more African American students than any of the four individual Maryland historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In FY 2011, 33-percent of students who took at least one online class were African American. In FY 2011, 36-percent of master's degrees were awarded to African American students; 31-percent of all degrees and certificates were awarded to African American students. UMUC provides higher education opportunities to working adults As of Spring 2011, 71-percent of undergraduate students enrolled in UMUC's stateside programs were working full time. Forty-seven percent of UMUC stateside students are working parents. In Fall 2010, the median age for students enrolled in UMUC's stateside undergraduate programs was 32 years old. UMUC: Page 3

4 UMUC is one of the largest education providers to the U.S. military Today, UMUC enrolls 55,000 active-duty military service members, reservists, veterans, and their family members. Currently, UMUC offers courses at more than 150 military installations and operating locations on four continents. Military Times Edge ranked UMUC second out of 50 for "Best for Vets Colleges." (2010) Please visit for more information about the College. *Most recent data available from the Department of Education LEADERSHIP THE PRESIDENT Javier Miyares was appointed president of University of Maryland University College (UMUC) on October 1, He has served UMUC in several leadership capacities since joining the institution in 2001 and excelled in guiding UMUC as acting president since February 22, Prior to joining UMUC, Mr. Miyares was associate vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at the University System of Maryland (USM), where he had also served as assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. Mr. Miyares was the lead staff member for USM on issues related to strategic planning, accountability, student learning assessment, and institutional research. Mr. Miyares' more than 25 years of higher education experience includes employment with the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). Mr. Miyares earned bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology at UMCP. He completed all the requirements but the dissertation for a doctorate in Educational Measurement and Statistics. THE BOARD OF VISITORS The UMUC Board of Visitors is an advisory board to the UMUC president. The board of 20 to 40 members is composed of alumni and friends who take a special interest in UMUC and its progress. Members come from several industries and professions and are appointed to the board by the president, who takes recommendations from a membership committee. Visit THE PRESIDENT S CABINET The President's Cabinet is an advisory body that shares information with the president on key projects and initiatives taking place across the University. It includes the individuals on the Executive Committee and other leaders representing various departments and divisions at the university. The chair of UMUC s University Advisory Council (UAC) also serves as an ex-officio member of the cabinet. The cabinet meets regularly and provides a forum through which the president can communicate critical information. UMUC: Page 4

5 VICE PRESIDENT FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Since 2009, Cathy Sweet-Windham has served as the vice president of institutional advancement at UMUC. She oversees all development and alumni relations activities for the University. With a career interest in special mission-driven institutions, she previously worked at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. During her 18 year tenure at Gallaudet, she had many roles including special assistant to the president for board and external relations, director of major and planned gifts and annual fund director, and vice president of institutional advancement. Before joining Gallaudet, she worked for the state of North Carolina where she managed a multicounty human services center and won recognition for her work in establishing a state-wide accessible program for disabled people. She also worked at the United Way of Forsyth County where she directed a community service program. In the late 1980s she managed a multi-million grant funded by the National Institutes of Health, which focused on predictive reading and writing skills of deaf children. Ms. Sweet-Windham earned a master's degree in counseling from Gallaudet University and a bachelor's degree in education from the University of North Carolina. IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS The AVP will report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. He or she will oversee a team of five staff, including three direct reports: the Assistant Vice President of Development, the Director of Corporate Relations, and the Director of Annual Giving. The AVP will build effective working relationships with senior academic and administrative leaders, faculty, members of the Board of Visitors, volunteers, alumni, family, and friends; he or she will proactively engage and involve these diverse members of UMUC s community in strategic fundraising activities, as appropriate. KEY OPPORTUNITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The AVP will be expected to contribute broadly to all aspects of the fulfillment of UMUC s mission and growth. The college seeks dynamic fundraising leader with both the capacity and the demonstrated track record to respond effectively to the following key opportunities and challenges: In close collaboration with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, proactively and systematically expand and diversify philanthropic revenue for the College (currently $3.5 million annually); With a dynamic and innovative approach, lead the major gifts, annual giving, and foundation and corporate relations programs; Build strong collaborative relationships with UMUC leadership, faculty, staff, colleagues, volunteers, alumni, and other leaders and, in doing so, further the culture of philanthropy across the College s diverse community; Maintain a personal portfolio (approx. 100) of top donors and prospects: focus on the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations; As appropriate, strategically engage College stakeholders in public outreach and fundraising activities, providing meaningful engagement opportunities and effective support; UMUC: Page 5

6 Actively deepen and broaden relationships with alumni, friends, families, organizations, and corporations; further the loyalty and engagement of the community to encourage higher levels of support and involvement; Expand public outreach: design and implement strategies for reaching out to non-traditional prospective donor constituencies, including targeted philanthropists, foundations, and corporations; In consultation with the Director of Advancement Services, lead the Prospect Management System; Guide the preparation and submission of proposals for new and renewed support to major gift prospects, including the review of all proposals submitted by the major gifts team; Ensure best fundraising and operational practices: make certain that policies and practices comply with all local, state and federal laws, regulatory requirements, UMUC policy and donor instructions; and, oversee systems for proper and transparent recording of major gifts to ensure accountability and timely stewardship; Maintain a work environment which encourages participation, promotes productivity, and utilizes clearly defined goals and methods with which to measure success. IDEAL EXPERIENCE & QUALITIES The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and agile fundraising leader. The AVP will have the stature, creativity, and professional experience necessary to effectively meet the responsibilities listed in the preceding section. Expected experience and personal qualities include: Proven ability to provide innovative fundraising leadership for major gifts, foundation and corporate relations, annual giving; Successful track record of building and maintaining a prospect portfolio and securing significant (five- and six-figure) gifts, including the ability to effectively identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors; Talent, creativity, and capacity to apply traditional fundraising best practices within a very entrepreneurial, matrix environment; Ability to create and expand a constituency: a demonstrated history of achieving fundraising goals for a staff-driven organization from both defined (alumni, parents, families) and non-defined (non-alumni) constituencies; Experience in a cutting-edge not-for-profit institution or organization where an inventive, proactive approach is needed for success; Fundraising capacity building: a track record of scaling a fundraising operation, expanding the donor base, and migrating donors to higher giving levels, resulting in increased capacity and revenue growth; Inclusive management skills to direct a results-oriented team while maintaining best practices, camaraderie and shared accountability; Confidence and fundraising acumen to effectively recruit, engage, and support volunteer leaders, as needed; Alignment with UMUC s Core Values: innovation, and respect; students first, accountability, diversity, integrity, excellence, Strong commitment to the College s mission and to working in a diverse multi-cultural environment; UMUC: Page 6

7 Ability to engage diverse constituents in a manner that generates excitement, shared purpose, meaningful action, and long-term relationships; Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and listening), the ability to effectively and creatively share the case for support with diverse constituencies; this experience must include the proven ability to write and review winning grants and proposals; Strategic risk taker who is politically savvy and professionally acute; Entrepreneurial instincts, intellectual curiosity, and an ability to work both independently and as a team member; Collaborative spirit and approach to fundraising; Team player comfortable with ambiguity as decision-processes evolve over time, and the ability to quickly refine strategies after feedback from stakeholders; Ability to set priorities, manage time, leverage limited resources, and meet deadlines; Flexibility, patience, and a healthy sense of humor; Bachelor s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
